Exactly. We'd start seeing who's "favorite smiths" and their $250 jobs were putting out quality work and who wasn't real quick like.

Here... I'll start. Here's a pre-fit drop in on a Lone Peak Fuzion.

So are $250 jobs not as good as $700 threading/chamber jobs?

Or does marketing/forums and publicity create a demand from certain smiths that 4 years ago were and aren't better than many others of equal quality for a lessor price?
Don't get me wrong I'm all about paying for what you get. Just like any industry there are those just playing the market and charging too much compared to others.
Crickets....

Along the lines of prefits I called around in my glorious State and no one did prefit barrel jobs
just action barrel combinations. Or just full rifle builds. So then you go back to the action maker and they have their preferred list. So there you are. Some will then say 6/10 weeks but then 5 months is more correct. All seem to be backed up. If things ever get caught up it might get better but my gut says this is the new norm.
Feds are raising interest rates this just now stated so maybe this will also affect prices positive or negative??

…so in the opinion of this thread, are these prices out of line?

I would first like to say I'm sorry that it is costing more than you expected. I beg you to always ask a price on ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING, before you ever even make the decision to have anything done. Whether it be trimming your poodle or buying a 2000 acre tract of land, get a hard price up front. Sometimes you'll be pleasantly surprised and other times you will realize that you are in the wrong place.

We'd see a lot less hand wringing on this topic if people were forced to show a live uncut video of their typical rifles performance on target at 100yds.
It's not nearly that simple.
An accurate rifle is a system- that includes everything from concentricity and perpendicularity of the receiver/components, to the barrel fitting/chambering, to the stock or chassis fitment, to the ammunition. And while a trigger doesn't make a rifle more or less accurate by definition, it sure manifests at the target.

It's one thing if a smith has complete control over the entire build, and the customer agrees to the recommendations- the smith clearly owns it. If not, you can't necessarily "blame" the riflesmith. Even a precision receiver and top tier barrel perfectly fitted/chambered can shoot like a shotgun from poor stock/chassis fitment and/or a DIY bedding job that warps the receiver.

Very well. How many prefit barrels in lone peak/Impact/BAT actions in foundation stocks shooting sub .2's at 100yds would you accept as statistically significant?

... because it's is indeed that simple for me.

Yes, I would like to see a prefit agg in the .2s in a benchrest match. By the way, I'll show my ignorance, what is a foundation stock?

Concentricity was used in the beforehand statement and as I understand from speaking to barrel makers it does start with the action and how true or square they are and centered with the barrel. The actions you stated are considered to have threaded tolerances that are consistent it takes a competent GM to chamber the barrel to exact alignment and concentricity. A friend had a bad chamber that had to be broken down and gauged to find this issue

A heavy stock that is fitted to exact tolerances and expensive. But top of the line from my understanding

Thank you.

We have an aspiring benchrest guy who bought a stock which was advertised not needing a bedding job. Well, he did just that despite our advise to do so. He found some errornet info about tuning with action screws torque, which he did. Still have not shot 250 in a VFS match.

In testing once in awhile he would shoot a nice screamer group, not sustainable.

I've seen them. Sorry you haven't... but it isn't as if the benchrest crowd is exactly welcoming of new tech. I predict you'll see it soon. Outside of the work I've been doing... I don't see other people trying to demonstrate just how small this stuff shoots. The Foundations are most popular in field positional disciplines. Why F-class and benchrest haven't picked up on them is a mystery only Fudd lore can answer.

Soon, everyone will be running them on everything. The videos I have, and the rest I have planned for the summer will stand on their own. Explanation will not be necessary.

I charge $300 to turn the tenon, thread, and chamber. It's another $125 to crown and thread the muzzle. Good work is not cheap and cheap work is not good. I guarantee my work and customer satisfaction which is also a service that has a cost. I'm accustomed to particularly good shooting rifles, so I have high standards and expectations on performance.

If you look at the custom rifle market these days and figure the sum of the parts (completed rifle cost) and back out the cost of all the parts, you'll see that most are charging $600+ for the same service, it just gets cloudy in a finished product.

I build every rifle with the same care and attention to detail that I would put into a championship benchrest rifle. They get 110% of me or nothing at all. Some of us put more effort into things like clocking the runout in the bore to TDC or timing flutes etc.. Higher quality work, mirror finish threads cut to spec and gauged, a chamber with the right amount of polish but not so much that it causes bolt thrust, correctly chamfered edges, and proper machining techniques that contribute to a mechanically perfect union between the parts.

I have a lot of investment in high end tooling, measuring equipment, and gauges. This allows me to do my job in a consistent and professional manner that is 2nd to none. I've spent the money to make the investment to do the absolute best work possible. Years of training with some of the biggest names in the industry and continuing my education through research and practical application has allowed me to elevate my work. There are painters, and there are artists. I feel like my dedication to my craft warrants the prices I charge, which I deem fair for my common man.

Everything costs more these days, but I try and keep my prices fair. This is my profession, what I do for a living, not a side job, and I feel like I owe my customers my best work.
This right here!!!! Details matter, if you want and appreciate paying attention to the details then you gladly pay. When I get work that looks awesome and performs stellar I gladly pay what they want because giving a **** combined with talent is kinda hard to find nowadays.
