In the Ear? Really???

scram, i might have missed it, but did you ever get to check out the thermal when the wife was gone??

I got to play with my new Armasight thermal in the back yard one night while the wife was gone. My plan was to go out this past weekend since the weather was PERFECT and she was supposed to be out of town, but instead, I went play set shopping. I'm going to head out tonight after I put my daughter down if it is not raining. I'm going to take it with me and check it out. I've got it on a Ruger SR-762 and I'm expecting good things from the setup.

I think the trapping may have scared off the hogs in a few of my hunting spots. I checked my cameras yesterday morning. Two of them did not have a single hog photo since put the cameras out 36 days ago. I'm sure they will be back at some point.

dimple nutz, if he had kept running i would have chased him. that's a very big field and he was in the middle of it. probably why he couldn't decide which way to go.. lol

spambler, dunno how far a big city is from you, but consider sending the wife and a couple of her friends on a week long shopping spree with your credit cards. tell her the only catch is she has to drop the kid off at her parent's house.

We're about 75 minute from Myrtle Beach. I'd love for her to go on girls weekend, but she (1) hates shopping (2) her parents are divorced and the closest one lives 7 hours from us and (3) she won't even think about letting anyone other than me watch our daughter.

So until one of the 3 above things changes, I'll have to sneak out at night after we put our daughter down for the night. When she is big enough to hunting, I'll have an awesome little hunting partner. We are having her first birthday party next month. The theme is "Pink Camo" so hopefully we are getting her started on the right track!

I got the idea for this from watching an episode of Pigman.

Two weekends ago, I put out 5 gallons of corn and put a bunch of sticks and wood on the pile. I also put some syrup on the pile. I went back two mornings ago and retrieved the memory card from the trail camera I had over the pile.

This photo was taken with about 1/3 of the wood on the pile.

The first night, it took the hogs (all small ones) over 6 hours of off and on effort for the hogs to completely dismantle the pile. They came back to the pile for the next few days to scavenge for more corn.

I've got more wood than I know what to do with, so I'm going to play around and see how much wood I can add to the pile and how long I can keep the hog's interest in getting the corn. I figure it is worth it if I can keep the hogs in a location for an extended period of time.

interesting idea. i think that is basically the same purpose of a pig pipe... to keep them interested enough to stick around for a while.

i will be back in the badlands soon. fortunately i don't have the same addiction to killing pigs as you folks. i'm content to wait for optimal wind conditions, but hopefully that will be tonight :)

It is pretty much the same concept.

I've cut down the number of bait piles as I've learned more about the local geography of where I hunt. I had been putting corn piles about 600 yards from each other, then I'd wonder why I'd never see hogs at the piles. I found out that I was missing the sounders since I spent so much time traveling to the various bait piles that I put up.

Now, I only put one bait pile in an area. I use the local creeks and swamps to separate areas. My success has gone up since I am concentrating on 5 piles within about 4 miles instead of 10 piles. The hogs will find the corn, so why make it harder for myself by covering ground I don't need to cover?

Speaking of wind, we've had nothing but wind the past several days. Schools closed early yesterday since the forecast called for 70 mph gusts. The wind is supposed to be in the 30 mph range until Sunday, so I think I'll stay around the house for a few days.

well what do you know? managed to get out last night after all. who would have guessed?

when i pushed the dvr into its case, i must have touched the sd card. when i took it out this morning it was already partially ejected. no video :(

too bad cause these were some nice kills. oh well. pics will have to do.

Nice kills! Looks like the hogs out in TX are generally larger than the ones in SC. Most of the ones I kill are under 175 lbs. How much would you guesstimate that those two weighed?

when i used to weigh hogs, they never weighed as much as i thought. the ones that seemed much larger than me would weigh in at 175lbs or so. i never got good at it. i would guess these to weigh 200 so they are probably closer to 175.

when they get 250 or better, i have a hard time moving them, but these were pretty easy to move around. obviously setting the camera close to the ground and right up to the hog makes them look bigger.

i must have bumped this pig coming down the road. as soon as i turned in the field he was already running. it was a mile wide circle and he skirted along the south side. that gave me a chance to get down the center road and work in front of him using the pivot for cover.

he never stopped long enough to give me confidence in an ear shot. plus, the high winds kept rocking my stance. but he kept coming and soon was so close it didn't matter. i tried to stop him with a lip squeak just for grins, but it actually spooked him. when he started to trot away i piled him up in a nose dive.

i came up on this pig rooting up a peanut field. he was close but never knew i was there. i took up stage one on the trigger several times, but he never settled down enough to stick it in his ear. i kept having to reposition the farther out he went. when he got in front of the pivot center, i decided to move over for a clearer shot.

i got set again and was ready to deliver the death blow when something spooked him. he angled back towards me in a hurry. finally he got so close i knew nothing could save him. once the background was clear i carefully blew his brains out.

Awesome!!

DJ,

Nice videos! I'm getting more impressed with your video production and Photoshop skills every day!

I checked my trail cameras yesterday. Not much activity, mostly hit and miss. The guy that lets me hunt his land saw a sounder of over 40 hogs on his neighbor's property last Friday afternoon. Gives me something to look forward to!
