In the Ear? Really???

its the one from ultimate night vision. took me a while to find a way to secure it adequately cause i dint get the opt accessory pouch. its lot of baggage and a hassle with the cables but cool to rewatch.

No hogs in the traps yesterday morning, so I'm going to hold off on going until the property owner says they've come back around.

The floodwaters are receding, so the hogs are not "trapped" as they were a few weeks ago. I did learn that the guy that owns the 1,000 + acre track next to my honey hole doesn't shoot hogs much, so hopefully that means a steady supply of hogs.

I don't have any photos to support this, but the one of the guys I spoke with yesterday said that his neighbor got 19 hogs in one trap and 26 in another.

i'm starting to get the hang of this video thing. nice to be able to play it back and see what happened. i had lots of room to improve my shooting, but at least i hit some. they're pretty tough to keep going with body parts getting shot off.

i'm really liking the vid stuff. kind of a hassle but worth it when it works. it hasn't cost me any shots or misses yet. plus it's great when i'm wondering... did i miss or did they just run off with a bullet through them? just goes back to the age old question of whether pigs are easy to kill or not. anything that runs that far with so much coming out of it is pretty tough in my book.

doubt dbl nutz has anything to worry about. he taught me everything i know, but not everything he knows... yet. besides he's got that video personality going for him, not to mention angry bird.

i first spotted these pigs at the far end of a 600 yard pivot. there were a lot, so i didn't want to take any chances. city lights in the distance were blinding in the pvs14, so i stopped every time i reached the next tower to check with the thermal. when i got within a few hundred yards, i tried to move to the other side of the pivot and use it for cover, but the crp grass was too loud and there was absolutely no wind to mask the noise. i had to get back in the sandy turn row even though i was exposed. if just one pair of eyes caught my movement they would be gone before i could take one shot.

i was getting cold creeping along so slowly. i should have worn gloves, but i don't really like shooting with them. however, i hadn't planned on my fingers going numb. still i inched forward, hoping to make it to one more tower, but i just couldn't take any more chances and stopped between the third and fourth tower, which probably put me a couple hundred yards away.

i was shivering noticeably at 2x magnification, or 6 power. i'm not sure why the middle of the horizontal crosshair is missing sometimes in the video, but they're ok in the scope. i think some filtering cables would do a better job with the dvr. anyway, i thought the crosshairs were on the mark when i shot, but the pig didn't drop. he didn't even look like he was hit when he took off. i wasn't lucky enough for them to run out into the field. instead they took to cover, and i had to wait until i was comfortable shooting between the sprinklers. as you can see my shooting sucked. i just don't quite have the knack for holding in front and letting them enter the scope. i'm used to leading them, but i couldn't do that safely around the pivot. also, 6 power still messes with my lead. they seem so close and i shoot so far behind them it's embarrassing. i finally hit a few, but the grass was tall and the pigs were little. all i found was one.

I don't have a clue why you missed the first shot. It looked good to me. You could see the dirt plume up beyond the pigs on the misses. The lead looked good too. It all looked good to me but then what's that worth???

Have you checked it on a bench lately?

No horizontal line because of a ground loop issue - difference in ground between the scope and the dvr.

Lot of good side view of the hog after the first shot and often you will see blood around the wound and you are right, it doesn't look like you hit him at all. Reverify your zero?

It is nice to see a person that uses more ammo than me! When my buddy gets back from the field and sends me his video, I will post a first shot miss as well. I did the frame by frame analysis and the bullet zipped right by the pig's head. Zero was good, aim was not.

dead nutz,
since it's intermittent, does that imply it's the cable??

the action was fast on these hogs. they were already on the run when i saw them. that means a rundown, power slide and shoot out the window.

managed to creep up on this guy without him noticing me. video not very eventful, except for the debris flying out the other side like fireworks.

I am not sure what you are asking if that implies it is the cable. It is not a short in the cable or connections. It happens with various brands and manufacturers of thermal gear and dvrs. I have seen it on FLIR, LWTS, Pulsar, Armasight, ATN, and IR Defense thermal units and DVRs from Angel Eye, UNV, Lawmate, and a couple of undefined Chinese manufacturers with cables provided by some of the DVR makers, UNV, and home made. Bottom line, if you run a direct cable between the thermal scope and the dvr, sometimes you will have your horizontal crosshair and sometimes you won't. There is nothing actually wrong with your cable, though the problem can be resolved with a ground loop isolator.

A ground loop isolator is most commonly used between CCTV cameras and the display/recorder. The little units may run about $20, but you need to know what wires go where to hook them up since the thermal and dvr connectors are not your typical CCTV connectors.

In speaking with folks at Armasight and Pulsar, nobody is exactly sure why this happens. Ground loop isolators usually are used to remove interference introduced by the differences in ground, but it also seems to resolve this problem as well. Some folks might call it a filter, but it isn't actually a filter, but does a filter-like job.

What a great bonus too! Nice! Looks like a pretty big one too. I seen one yesterday and it was brown instead of gray. Of course no rifle.

Are you going to stuff it?
