Whats everyones thoughts on Federal's new 7mm Back Country. I was on the verge of having a 280 AI mountain style rifle built with a 22 in barrel but 3000 FPS out of a 20 in tube with a case the size of a 280 Remington is very appealing.

I was initially skeptical, but the concept has promise. I think it's going to be a success. You should go for it, if you're willing to try a cartridge whose future is unknown.

I bought a 20" 6.5 PRC last year and love the size and weight of the rifle, but a 7 would work even better on elk sized game. However, my rifle is 7 lb 3 oz with sling, scope, and ammo. The heavier recoil of the 7 BC vs the 6.5 PRC would be a bit of a disadvantage.

Personally, if I was contemplating a 280 AI or another lightweight 7 I'd give one of these a try.

Yeah....I just bought a used SS Tikka CTR 6.5 CM for a donner to build a 280 AI . This has put me in a holding pattern. It would be nice if Federal started producing cases made from this material for other standard cals.

Thanks for the words of wisdom but would rather have the opinions of other rifle/shooting gurus on this site than the opinions of magazines and others who may have been paid to promote this cartridge,
I could only dream that someone would pay for my opinion. I'm not promoting the cartridge but rather espousing my experiences with advancing technology.

I predict that in time quite a few people will end up wearing bits of actions, this cartridge is operating at 80,000 psi a pressure standard rifle actions were never designed to withstand. Yes I know they do withstand it but for how long ? repeatedly stressing an action past it's design limit will result in failure. It's a case of when not if.

Three linked video I saw in past few days. Video 1 on new cartridge was like, no big deal. Second was, WOW this is the greatest thing ever (seemed a little over the top). The third was a video about Seekins doing a complete redesign on Havak actions to prepare for a large scale change to either hybrid cartiges (Sig Fury) or some other type of alloy like this new Federal. I think there is no question shooters and especially hunters are shooting suppressed more and more and shorter barrels with same performance is great. I just wonder if at some point peole get tired (or maybe the opposite) of jumping to new cartriges all the time. My $0.02.

Just build you a 28 nosler and you can get better speed out of it with out any pressure signs I'm shooting 195 Bergers at 2965 fps. And can go more if needed good luck on what ever you do.
Honestly I was wondering about such a comparison. Which barrel will wear out first? A 28Nosler shooting 90gr of powder at 65ksi, or 7BC shooting 60gr of powder at 80ksi? If they wear out at the same time, then not too sure if the 7BC has a huge advantage. Same goes for recoil. If the 7BC produces the same amount of recoil as 28Nosler, then I'm not sure there is a big advantage. Luckily, you can calculate the recoil difference. I just haven't. Barrel life may be more of a wait and see issue.

I'm not sure on the barrel life but the re coil is not bad at all on my with a 23" barrel ,I'm only putting 81.5 N570 powder with ADG BRASS LIKE I SAID I CAN GO MORE BUT WHY? Everything it hits drops like a rock ,I'm useing a hells canyon barrel and they use mostly beanchmark barrel liners
