26 Nosler Wildcats

How are you going to form them?

I got the generic magnum forming set from a member. It's to difficult to find his handle using this tablet. You can find him if you look. It works great.

For the mock ups I just worked it out from the SAMMI spec. Then when my 26 Nosler dies arrived, ran it through. The shoulder/neck junction seems correct.

Now that I have "real" brass it will be easier to set up. Thinking about it, I wonder if using the go gage to set the die would work out the spring back automatically.

Forming from RUM, I will anneal the brass at the new shoulder height and again halfway through forming. Then anneal again, expand the neck to fired ID and turn em. The mock up necks reached over .018.

For .277, .284 and maybe. 308 I can expand the necks, trim and true em up. For everything else, form from RUM.

jfseaman,

Thanks for the dimensions. Wondering if it would be easier to form the Nosler from 338 RUM brass with the shoulder being approx. .090" shorter?

Maybe. Last time I looked it was available which is an advantage.

I ordered a set of forming dies from Hornady to form RUM cases for a cartridge I'm doing. My case size is real close to the 26 Nosler. I think I can form them complete without annealing then anneal the finished case. Custom form dies aren't real expensive.

Well who ever gets it done first, please share.

Just some numbers to pass the time because it came up in the 195 grain 7mm Berger thread.

Capacity
Lapua Improved ~115 grns
Lapua ~112 grns
RUM ~105 grns
PRO ~105 grns
Nosler ~95 grns
STW ~92 grns
~2.62" belted magnums ~85 grns

This is not intended that be an exhaustive list.

These chamberings could be, are or will be found in calibers from .264/6.5mm to .375.

They all have advantages and disadvantages.

I've been quietly messing around with my idea of a "30 Nosler" using a 300 RUM reamer to cut the chamber to the depth needed ....
.... ie a "short" 300 RUM ( or "long" 300 WSM with 30 degree shoulder) a new reamer will not be necessary and factory 300 RUM dies can be cut down .... probably the least expensive wildcat design to build off the 26 Nosler, a 7mm can be done the same way ....
If this is possible ,

I'll drop a 26 Nosler case into the 300 RUM seater die with no stem and into the R700 RUM chamber and see what I get. If it fits you may be on to something and save me a bunch.

I used the 300 WSM seater to make most of the mockups in the 26 Nosler wildcats thread http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f19/26-nosler-wildcats-135983/

Fred

I've been following your thread and have enjoyed reading up on your project and progress so far, wildcats are fun but a lot of work and can get expensive, don't let the hecklers and naysayers bother you, unless they have gone through the entire wildcat process from a sketch on a piece of paper to a completed cartridge and firearm coupled with live fire data they have only internet experience and should be ignored, I am eagerly waiting for live fire data as I'm sure everyone else is, this case has tremendous potential so long as you eliminate the "30'06 length" crap and run it as it should be, there is nothing to be gained by seating the bullet to the ogive to achieve some ridiculous length limitation .

I'm with you on the 35 degree vs the 40, my main reason is I found that the 40 degree shoulder does not feed very well in AICS cip mags, often times a complete jam/ stoppage is experienced with damage to the brass, with the 35 degree all I did was use a round chainsaw file to round over the mags feed lips and polish smooth with 100% feeding and no jams even when fast cycling rounds, with a 30 degree shoulder it won't be an issue at all, on smaller diameter cases the 40 degree shoulders work well but are unnecessary on the RUM sized and larger cases ( my opinion only )

Watch out for neck thinning when necking up to exteme diameters, I noticed in my 375 Pro and especially the 416 and 500 Pro wildcats that the necks thin to the point that there is too much slop in the chamber, a lesson learned the hard way !! I never took brass stretch and thinning into account and reamers were made that way, my saving grace for those three big bore cartridges was the 423 Dakota brass made by Lapua, verify your neck thickness and discuss it with Dave to confirm proper dimensions before reamers are made .

Will keep tabs on your progress as I am very interested in doing a 30 Nosler, thinking of attempting the "short stroked" 300 RUM reamer method and cut down dies,

Wow, this is really an impressive project. Like everybody else I can't wait to see how it all unfolds. The 284/26 is going to be impressive with the heavy bullets. My personal favorite is going to be the 338/26. That's going to be potent elk medicine!

Good luck with everything, and big kudos for sharing your work here. I know it takes time but we all appreciate it!
