JfSeaman,

Do you know the wall thickness of the 26 Nosler brass ?
Not yet.
Also have you checked to see if the body of the brass will pass the feed rails on your mauser and the two remingtons? According to what I have read the 26 Nosler is a shortened RUM case. I have not been able to get a RUM case to go past the feed rails of my Rem 700 which was a 300 win mag nor will it pass the feed rails of a Mark X mauser clone. Will you be altering your rifle's?
I have a R700 in 300 RUM to use as a sample to alter the feed rails.
As for the Mauser, I't sure it's been done but I'll switch to Mark Vs if I need to.
thanks

Ross

Fred,

when you do get some Nosler brass please share its wall thickness.

thanks

Anyone have a guide on how to cut cases in half length wise by hand?

I'll split a Nosler case and make one from R-P then split it.

Fred,

I just talked with Mike at Nosler and he said the wall thickness is .016"

The reason for my asking about the thickness has to do with my recent experiences with a 7mm/375 I made. The brass has a wall thickness of .0175". The third firing of the brass didn't want to extract. The bolt opened easily as before but rearward movement of the bolt hung up so badly that the bolt had to be tapped rearward! There is a shiny area just in front of the belt where the brass apparently didn't contract enough. It is my feeling that just like the WSSMs the thicker brass is an issue. I believe due to its thickness and the multiple firings that it has lost its ability to spring back away from the chamber.

To be honest the symptom is similar to a bulged chamber. I encountered that once and it took multiple taps with a piece of wood hitting the bolt to remove the brass. The polished area was much larger on the brass too. This rifle has not been overloaded and doesn't show the symptom with virgin, once or twice fired brass. Showed up on third firing.

I asked Mike about any issues with brass not springing back for easy extraction after multiple firings. He said they haven't encountered any.

I will be very interested in your findings Fred.

Are you full-length resizing or neck sizing only? With belted case, FL sizing can start to form a bulge just ahead of the belt.

All else being equal, thicker-walled brass is stronger and will therefore maintain its elasticity (spring-back) at higher pressures better than thin-walled brass. The higher strength means less permanent deformation occurs so it is more able to return to its original shape.

The brass I've seen has a tapered wall. It isn't the same thickness from the web to the neck. About a year ago, I cut up some Remington brand 300 RUM cases. They were about .050" thick in front of the web and tapered to about .015" at 2.160".

I'm wondering what a .323-26 Nosler or 8mm-Nosler for another long-range cartridge. If someone like Berger would build bullets in .323 in high BC, I think this might fill a void that exist in the market. It would also kick less than various .338 rounds. Just thinking out loud.

I didn't mean to pull us away from the 26 Nosler wildcat subject. But this is a wildcat with similarities to the Nosler brass only .002" thicker.

I FL size that 7mm/375 and use a bushing die for the necks. Never heard of thicker brass having more inherent spring back. Why did so many shooters have issues with the various WSSMs? They had thick case walls too.

I cut one of the 375 cases in half and after deburring measured the case wall with my ball mic. .0175".

I ended up pulling the barrel and sanding the chamber a bit larger in the rear portion. Will be shooting it tomorrow.

To repeat the virgin and second time fired cases had no issues with rearward bolt movement after bolt was opened. Shiny band was only present with the third times fired stuff.

Back to the 26 Nosler.......

That seems perfect to me. I have not cut any RUMs in half.

More more progress.

jfseaman,

I appreciate the time and effort you went to cut those cases in half and do those measurements.

The RUM case walls don't look as tapered as the Nosler. Unfortunately I cannot tell which case is which when you were measuring the web and shoulder wall thicknesses.

Can you write the values associated with each case in the next post?

thanks

Ross

It was very late and I'm using my tablet so a little harder to type.

R-P 300 RUM shoulder ~.015, web ~.045
26 Nosler shoulder ~.014, web ~.035

So I will loose some case volume forming from RUM brass but its not that big.

I have to make a new anvil that I can slip a case over so I don't have to cut them. Then I can measure the Norma and Nosler RUM.

I think the pictures are in the same order as the list and the values are displayed on the dial.

Seems I was a little slow on the keyboard.
