Your Ultimate 500 Yard Rig

A 300 Win Mag in a trued Mauser action, 1:8 twist #3 barrel 26", Maple stock glass bed, 6x42 scope New SWFA used Leupold.

A 338 Edge in a Howa Action, 1:9 twist #3 barrel, Walnut economy grade wood checkered heavily pillar bedded and glassed, Burris 4x12 scope

These would kill anything that walks and breaths in North America from Kodiac Bear to Deer. The top one could be used almost any place on earth. The bottom one is a Wildcat so that rules out most countries but would work just fine in North America.

To be honest though anything that shoots flatter than a 45-70 that can push big heavy bullets would work. 35 Wheelen, 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 338 Win Mag, 8mm Mauser, 270, 7mm Mauser, 6.5x57 RWS think Mauser. If you rule out Kodiac Bear and Moose you can even include things like 260 Remington, 25-06 etc.....

Truth be told you could drop anything in North America with a $50 Mauser you bought from a gas station in 8mm Mauser with the rifles sitting in a barrel. 500m is not hard to do even with iron sights. Keep in mind your shooting large game usually with their head down eating grass when you shoot. That does not require 1/4 MOA rifle! Shooting sticks super handy! I load my 8x57 Mauser with 196-200gr bullets. If I hit it it goes down.

Practicing freq. to keep your shooting skills sharp and having good field craft are what you really need more than any amount of gear. Being able to accurately range and read the wind again is more important than the cartridge. Knowing how to stalk an animal is super useful if you are going to be shooting 500m and under. The closer you can get the less likely you are to mis-read range or wind!
Your fourth and last paragraphs says it all, bigger cartridges fit in very well but know how to shoot and being confident with the rifle/caliber/cartridge you use is all that really counts.

Already have one fierce carbon titanium with Swaro Z5 3.5-18x44 with ballistic turret and 4W reticle. Light, accurate, and delivers plenty of punch with 175grain LRX or the various 178 -185 grain bullets out to 600 yards.

Both rifles are tuned and trued by Grunning Precision of Riverside, Calif.
Steel Pillars and Glass bedded. They are my primary big game rifles and have contributed to may successful hunts.

Depending on terrain, weather conditions and the State I'm hunting will dictate which rifle I carry. Surprisingly the 7-08 has made many 450-650 yd kills.

Though, I've been daydreaming of a color case hardened APR action w/ a Russo burly maple stock and a wrought iron fluted barrel in something like 375 Ruger or 338RUM for an artillery/safari/kodiak island rifle this week.
That sounds absolutely amazing and more like a piece of fine art than something to knock around in the woods with. I love the design and never would've thought of something so beautiful in a 375 Ruger.

Yeah... I think it would turn out pretty amazing. One of my weaknesses is taking awesome wood stocks and just plastering "memories" all over them in the woods.

I just finished my setup for a light 5-600 yard gun about a month ago. I went with a Kimber Montana in 280 AI with a NF NXS 2.5-10x42 in Talley mounts. Thinking about trying the Jard trigger, though the factory trigger feels great I prefer a pull around 1.5 lbs. So far I have shot it to 700 and it groups great. For 6.89 lbs it will be a pleasure to carry next season.

Excellent choices all. I'm intrigued by several and will be researching some like the 338 SS. I would love someone to build a true short action Ackley version of a Lazzeroni Galaxy in .338.

I also didn't know Fierce (and a few others) offered a titanium 3-lug. There are a bunch of different stocks out these days too.

That muzzle loader is great also. I love mine, but haven't killed anything with it yet.

Well played gents. Thank you for your input. Keep the dream rigs coming.

A friend of mine in Montana and his buddy bought .270 Weatherby (mags) 30? years ago and took everything up to and including Elk. He eventually added a .338 Winchester Mag for Moose but usually carried the .270 - which they both loved.

I've got a few that could answer that call.. My favorite though would have to be my Rem. 700 in 300 RUM with a Leupold 3-9.

Then you have tangible reminders of the memories made though. I have recently become converted to the classic wood look. There's nothing more beautiful or comforting to hold. It actually feels alive in your hands.
