Again...It has to be the .280 Rem. Kevlar stock Mountain Rifle with a 3.5X10 Leupold VARI X III W/A.O. 7#12 OZ. Loaded. Easy pack at 8,000 ft. where most of my hunting is done. FYI I am well into my 60's years of age. No Problemo.

What rig are you using to shoot 1 3/4 @ 500?!

Model 70 WSM action, blue printed and squared , 300 WSM Bartlien 1-10 #4 contour barrel, 175gr VLD with 59.2 of Big game powder, CCI 250M primer set in the McMillan Game Scout bedded. James Appleyard in Pa. built it, It shoots so well that he ended up building 3 more exactly like it with different color stocks for other clients. 1 out of the 3 shoots with mine, and the other 2 are at 2 1/4- 2 1/2 at 500

A 300 Win Mag in a trued Mauser action, 1:8 twist #3 barrel 26", Maple stock glass bed, 6x42 scope New SWFA used Leupold.

A 338 Edge in a Howa Action, 1:9 twist #3 barrel, Walnut economy grade wood checkered heavily pillar bedded and glassed, Burris 4x12 scope

These would kill anything that walks and breaths in North America from Kodiac Bear to Deer. The top one could be used almost any place on earth. The bottom one is a Wildcat so that rules out most countries but would work just fine in North America.

To be honest though anything that shoots flatter than a 45-70 that can push big heavy bullets would work. 35 Wheelen, 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 338 Win Mag, 8mm Mauser, 270, 7mm Mauser, 6.5x57 RWS think Mauser. If you rule out Kodiac Bear and Moose you can even include things like 260 Remington, 25-06 etc.....

Truth be told you could drop anything in North America with a $50 Mauser you bought from a gas station in 8mm Mauser with the rifles sitting in a barrel. 500m is not hard to do even with iron sights. Keep in mind your shooting large game usually with their head down eating grass when you shoot. That does not require 1/4 MOA rifle! Shooting sticks super handy! I load my 8x57 Mauser with 196-200gr bullets. If I hit it it goes down.

Practicing freq. to keep your shooting skills sharp and having good field craft are what you really need more than any amount of gear. Being able to accurately range and read the wind again is more important than the cartridge. Knowing how to stalk an animal is super useful if you are going to be shooting 500m and under. The closer you can get the less likely you are to mis-read range or wind!

What is your ULTIMATE rifle outfit for ~500yds on North American big game? Think packing WAY back/up in there with a shot of a lifetime on a trophy animal that has never seen a human.

Long/short action? Caliber? Action? Stock? Optic? Trigger? etc. Overkill is fine; what is your ULTIMATE dream rig for out to 500?

For now, a clunker Steyr Pro-Hunter in 30-06 with a Leopold VX-2, coin turn turret 3x9. It'll drop them in just fine at 500 if I can get a nickel out of my pocket fast enough to turn the turret. Super basic and light enough to haul up and down.

Got some parts for a 338 Norma though.

To 500 and less? My muzzleloader, Ultimate BP Xpress, with the AGS Gen2 breech plug.
McMillan Game Warden stock, muzzle brake, Jewell trigger, 112grs by weight of BH209, Parker 300gr Black Max bullet, Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 MOAR scope.

Funny, one of my friends shot more stuff than I can pay for with one of those "ol clunky prohunters" they shoot...

They're not THAT clunky... I used to shoot lots of them at the gun store, because customer's would pay us to sight-in their rifles after mounting a new scope. They're one of the most consistently-accurate (production-wise) factory sporter-barreled hunting rifles I've ever shot. Always wanted one of the 26" 7mmRM stainless SBS Prohunters. We used to get them by the truckload and sell them really cheap, wish I had bought one now, they're really hard to find.
