Here are a few things I think we can all agree on.
1. If left to find their own equilibrium, predators and prey will follow boom and bust cycles. When prey numbers rise eventually they'll either be corrected by predation or starvation. Predator booms will eventually be corrected by starvation. This would be "God's way".
2. With proper game management via hunting we can smooth out these peaks and valleys eliminating starvation events.
3. When it's your time to go, if you could choose between starvation, being dragged down and eaten alive, or a high velocity bullet through your vitals, there's really only one choice.
This is my argument if I ever have a real conversation with someone who is questioning the ethics of hunting. If they believe animals in the wild just die peacefully of old age, they are just too far gone to have a rational conversation with. If they believe "God's way" is always the best that is a perogative that I will never be able to change.

Or you just need to expand your definition of hunting. One thing that the Texans have figured out is that if you want to control pigs via hunting it's best done from a helicopter.

Of course trapping and poison are the most efficient, but that's a really tough sell.

Agreed! I would add that we've substantially modified the landscape and it's ability to support wildlife. Maybe it's implicit, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

You have a supposedly goal but you dont reach it but you keep doing the same thing over and over.
I have a saying you keep doing the same thing over and over your gonna get the same results.
Our F@G puts restrictions on trapping because of this and that, cant trap at this time of year because you might catch a griz although there own region 1 trapper in 40 years has got 1.
They have alot more reasons to not get one than to get the numbers down go read the regs.

Now your starting to venture down the rabbit hole. Too bad there was huge sarcasm in the response.
Oh, and by the way, I'm recovering from a back surgery performed on me on the 18th of December. It was an attempt to fix a botched surgery from 6 yrs ago that has left me in worse pain than I was in before the original surgery. It has cost me my marriage, and left me unable to do much of anything productive. I hunt from my bathroom window. I'm also unable to get disability because , well, I dont qualify . Unlike others I see with the special car tags that climb out of their car and tap dance into Walmart to buy big bags of energy drinks and junk food on their food vouchers. I guess you would have to be like me to see the conspiracy against the people who never wanted a hand out and are the backbone that pays for all this charity we give so freely to anyone who wants a free ride ! I will stop short of the long brace of 4 letter words I feel right now in response to your texts because I was raised better than that . After all, us smelly walmart shoppers dont deserve a voice in all this , do we.
Good points. Because we have modified the landscape so extensively we have basically 2 options:
1. Let nature manage itself.
2. We manage it.
The problem with 2 is that nobody knows what the right numbers of elk/wolves/bears/etc are. No one on this forum does (though there are no shortage of opinions), no biologist with a BS degree does, and no biologist with a Ph.D does either. However, I would listen to the Ph.D more than any of the other 2 because they are more likely to have the answers, but only after extensive study of the problem and after analyzing an abundance of information. Thy are human trying understand a very complex system and will occasionally make mistakes. But again, they are more likely to have an answer than the other 2 groups, just like an experienced mechanic is more likely to know what's wrong with your car than your barber (even though he has 4 cars).
Listen I have a nephew who is a biologist I listen to what he tells me about the political B.S that goes on. PHD's vrs BA's dont mean squat to me, real world experience does.
As far as I'm concerned we were just fine with the way things were.
Who do you think decided we needed more wolves Biologist's and politicians and there the ones still deciding.
