Copper monolithic bullets, like barnes (i tried some)

In the mid 90's I had problems with seating depths with a certain lot of barnes soft point bullets. I called their customer service dept and they offered to replace the bullets I had left of that lot # because of Olgive issues. I only had a few left so I used them up as practice bullets. then the TSX bullets came out and their (Barnes) tooling issues seemed to disappear. Did you ever encounter this with any of your calibers? Mine was .284

I had never loaded any Barnes bullets prior to the X Bullets…..unfamiliar with their soft points.

In the early 90's, I was only loading for my .375 AI using the Original X. Many folks seemed to have a myriad of issues with the originals……especially fouling. I guess that I was lucky, never even had fouling issues. I think that my "match grade" barrel may have helped reduce fouling.

In the mid '90's I was loading only for my wife's .338 WM and my .375 AI., both with the new TSX's. Again, no issues to report. Perhaps I wasn't as accuracy demanding as some.

I do believe that there may have been some ogive irregularities with the X's…..but not enough to significantly affect accuracy……at least my accuracy standards!

Oh and…..I hand lapped my wife's .338 barrel before we ever started shooting the Barnes' in it!

I went a long way to get to the answer….I guess that l simply could've said "no"! 😉 memtb

When the X bullets were introduced, all the tooling problems had been solved and consistency at the range was greatly enhanced. Many sub 1/2 MOA 5 shot groups in various calibers. I loaded up some for my friends and they too were convinced. The line up of TSX bullets went into all my rifles and their perfomance on game was outstanding. When the tipped version hit the streets, I loaded up some 150s for my friends 7 RM. He took a 6X6 bull and a 4X4 buck with it, but on the mule deer, all the petals came off the shank. Not what I was expecting. I have not experienced that prior nor since. I have put maybe $10K worth of x bullets down the pipe and have stockpiled another $10 K of them in my garage. I never want to run out!!!

The petals generally come off if impact velocity is really high.

Don't over look the maker t-rexs, been using them in my stw and 27 Sherman mag for almost 2 years now. All have been 1 shot kills out to 250 yards on deer size animals. They also shoot well out to 500 yards so far.

Good to know! I'll run some numbers and look at final distance estimations of velocity above 2000fps

.

What a fabulous resource you are.

Thanks so much, Ed.

I recently got back into reloading while awaiting my 280ai build to be completed and started playing with Hammer Bullets. Tried the Hammer Hunter in my .308 Bergara and they shot amazingly well. Recently I've worked loads up with the Hammer HHT in both my Ackley and the .308 and again was amazed at the accuracy! Can't wait to try them on game this season. The bullets and the guns both shoot better than I will ever be able to!

Thank you, Sir! I am simply sharing information.

Ed
There is certainly no shortage of copper bullets available for experimenting. If you add in the lead core options, a person could spend a lifetime testing and still not scratch the surface of "best" bullet for every application. Most loaders will be able to choose a few and test for accuracy at their intended range and be happy. Some will proclaim there are only a very few that should be considered based on their personal experience. I submit that common sense using known bullet design and bullet placement rule the day in hunting.

Hold that popcorn. I haven't seen any arguments…yet.
That's why it is IBTL. I, too, hope it stays on track without argument, hidden agenda, poli-ticks, etc., and other factors that divides us unnecessarily. Pick your bullet of choice and move on; it's really that simple.
