What’s your five? 5 Calibers to do it all...

I hate restrictions and own far too many firearms (Just joking, it can never be too many), but I will try to limit:
22LR
223
260AI
300RUM
375H&H
458Win
12 gauge

Then there are all the handguns I love to hunt with and carry as outdoor personal protection and hunting backup.

6.5 Creedmoor.

Boom. Done.
I like the Creedmoor but I don't think it would be my first choice for capes or a big brown bear. I've seen the footage and heard the story of a charging grizzly killed with a 270 win. on a hunt in Alaska. The first shot was at over a hundred yards the fifth and final shot was inside five yards. I saw the dead bear but the hunters shorts where not visible.😂😂😂. I think he had on brown pants. Good thing too!

" if you had the opportunity to hunt the world for everything from groundhogs to elephants and were limited to 5 cartridges or less what would they be?"

22-250 Rem
6.5 Creedmor
308 Winchester
7mm Rem Mag
300 Win Mag

I thought about adding the 270 Win but it's really in between the 6.5 CM and the 308 Win so it doesn't offer anything more than those two combined can deliver. I take into consideration not only the performance of the cartridge but also the availability and price of the ammo. I don't want things that are so exotic I can't find affordable ammo for it everywhere so I tend to stick with those cartridges that can withstand the test of time.

Hey guys,

I've been watching our threads for a while now and curiosity has got the best of me. With so many great choices out there for LRH which cartridges and calibers really set themselves apart from the rest, if any? Which ones make almost everyone's must have list? The reality is most people can't afford a half dozen rifles or more, so if you had the opportunity to hunt the world for everything from groundhogs to elephants and were limited to 5 cartridges or less what would they be? Just curious which ones consistently rise to the top and if any of the new Gucci cartridges make the cut or we wind up sticking with the tried and true. Feel free to state your reason or uses for each cartridge. I am not looking for a debate. There are no wrong answers. Everyone has there favorites. Just curious if there is any consistency? I think it could help some of the new guys narrow there choices when selecting their next cartridge....

I'll start! 308, 270 win, 300 WIn Mag, 338 RUM, 375 H&H. What are your thoughts???
Well 308 is my choice is personal but what I like about the 308 is the fact that I reload so I can reload it down to a varmint or up to the biggest animal in North America I need to keel and it's pretty much readily available it's easy to dope out know when your distance is a new yard isn't your drops in your windage so 308 is my go to just that simple

17 HMR (Squirrels, Rabbits, small game)
444 Marlin (Iowa Shotgun Season)
44 Mag (SD, Hunting)
280 AI (Mule Deer, Antelope,)
340 Weatherby ( Elk, Moose .. anything else)

If I have to choose only 5, here they are, I would choose more common calibers so that I could always find supplies. I've noticed that 50bmg is cheaper to shoot than most of the smaller long range calibers. Just got to have a good muzzle brake. It was a tossup for the 308 win vs the 300 wm. In the end the 308 with a 1 in 10 twist can handle 180grain hunting rounds, that is pretty good.

Overall, including self defense
22lr
9mm
5.56/223
308 win
50 bmg

just hunting:

22 winmag
243
308 win
300 winmag
338 LM
