In the Ear? Really???

DbleNSpy I was referring to dj trying to take your title of DNS (designated nut shooter).

More power to him! I hope he wears running shoes!:D

hey double nut spy...

i was also hoping to sight in my buddies atn thor 3 320 on a daniel defense blackout, but i took it off to use as a scouting device. a lot of things i see with the pvs look like hogs... tumble weeds etc. i can always make it out when i look through the night scope, but since it's mounted on the rifle, it was easier to just look through the thor.

i hear a lot of folks say they like using the thermal to spot and nv to shoot. i can certainly see the reasoning behind that, although you seem to do pretty well using thermal as a weapon sight.

i've got the use of his stuff for a couple of weeks. can't wait to check out the thermal on a dark night!!

No disrespect to anyone who says to spot with thermal and shoot with NV. It is a good combination, but I hunted with a buddy who only had NV and he was certainly at a disadvantage, especially on particularly dark nights or when the hogs were in the tree line. He could not see squat with NV or not see well enough to know which end to shoot.

With that said, thermal is far from perfect, but I very much prefer hunting thermal/thermal versus thermal/nv. Plus, I don't worry about Mr. Sun burning up my delicate Gen III NV (though some are now protected from that, I understand).

NV is better for basic navigation than thermal. Both have poor depth-of-field, but it is a much worse problem with thermal.

Glad you are having fun. Getting to play with thermal is like free crack. Now you have a thermal monkey on your back.

point well taken regarding the dark nights. as far as trees... well i don't have to worry about that where i hunt lol.

i'm looking into thermals with 1x optical and 2x to 4x digital zoom. they clip on and are used with a day scope. i may have asked you before and it seems you weren't as impressed with these type units. is that right?

I am not as impressed with thermal clip-ons as with dedicated scopes, but people certainly do a good bit of hunting with clip-ons. The advantage of the clip-on is that it let's you use your daylight scope to hunt at night. You just pop the clip-on on and you are supposed to be good to go with 2 MOA or less (usually what is advertised) POA change. Some seem to get no perceptible POA change.

The down side is that you are dealing with basically a 1x thermal scope and then blowing up the image from the little viewing screen to effect a zoom, sort of like holding a magnifying glass over your cell phone to watch Youtube videos as if you were seeing them on a big screen TV.

It is NOT supposed to happen, but I have seen clip-ons that do not consistently hold correct position, resulting in a change in POA while means an unexpected POI. There can be all sorts of reason for this, but I suspect it is largely user error.

Again, I have not been impressed with them, but some people use them and are quite happy.

I use an ATN Tico thermal clip-on. I mostly use it on my Armalite AR-10 with a Nightforce NSX 5.5-22x56 scope. I like the Tico since I use the magnification on the scope and the focus knob on the thermal unit to zoom in. I've "zoomed in" on targets upwards of 450 yards away, and get an incredible amount of clarity. I haven't tried further since I don't have a line of sight greater than 450 yards where I hunt. The only downside to my arrangement is the weight. Most of my hunting is out of a stand, so I don't have to lug the thing around the woods.

I like that I can take the unit off and still have full functionality of the AR-10.

Yeah, and weight is an issue often neglected (especially by me as I enjoy beefy rifles), but my hunting partner considers it substantial. It is a matter of both weight and distribution on the rifle. He was primarily hunting with an LWTS and the extra weight on the forend was a problem for him (shoulder injury).

I take it back. All of my hunting is either out of a stand or out of the back of my pickup. My setup would be WAY too heavy to haul around in search of hogs. I would definitely have to use another rig if I was spot-n-stalk hunting.

You guys will have to sympathize with poor old djones then, since he is not only carrying the rifle, but also that substantial spare tire he insists on lugging around his waist! From the back he is so big, he looks like he should be licensed and rolling down the freeway. Getting to the point that it's hard to tell who is the hog who isn't in his photo's, particularly since the one on the ground seems to be holding the rifle !........................:D

Since most of my hunting is out of a blind, or out of the back of a pickup down on the ranch, The M1A, while heavy, isn't much of a problem. By changing out the wood stock for the archangel, actually lost several pounds, then gained it back putting the NVD on it. Still weighs about 13 Lbs. Getting interested in a Thermal, but will keep reading and let you guys be the point men til I decide to commit to purchase. Still want to try putting IR or UV lights over the feeders to determine if it will increase the range of the NVD. Can't remember which one my NVD uses, since I've never got to use it yet, with everything happening here.

So far all of you are supplying some good info, so keep up the technical end of it.

BTW, after all my delaying tactics, finally got home about 3 AM and except for a few unexpected lapses, have managed to cope so far. Place seems really, really empty except for furniture, etc, and the neighbor ladies came in when they found I was coming home and dusted everything and even dry mopped the tile floors. One of the Men came over and trimmed back the bushes adjoining the properties. Don't know for sure who yet, but suspect George from across the street. Really good neighbors. Going to make it hard to sell the place and move on.

Will check back later this evening, and soooo glad to have a full keyboard again!

I also have an Armasight clip on NV unit. I've got it on a R700 5R in .308 with a NF SFV 5-20. It came with an IR flashlight. For the close range hunting (less than 100 yards) I do it is pretty amazing. I carry an thermal monocular unit with me so I can scan the fields, then switch to NV for the shot. The amount of detail is incredible. I was planning on going out tonight for hogs, but (1) the monsoon season is upon us in SC and I don't feel like getting drenched and (2) my son totaled my Jeep Cherokee yesterday so I'd have to take my pickup. My pickup has a loose belt and screams like a banshee, so there is NO element or surprise when I drive it. I've just been too busy to take it into the shop for repair.

Packrat,

Glad you are back home. I'm sure that's a lot to deal with. The offer is still open for bbq if you ever make it down this way. I wish you well in your journey.

Packrat, glad your home also. I really thought the other emoticon fit my mental image of you better...you know lipstick, panties maybe a purse.

Thanks for all the welcome backs! Say Coy since evey picture we have of you on this site shows you bareheaded, are you one of those Texas ranchers with all cows, no hat?

As far as your remarks about my emoticon, you're getting as bad as djones.......which is OK, I just have to widen my targeting sights a little!.............:D

Getting home so late because of that fatality accident blocking both lanes of the 93 between Phoenix and Kingman, screwed up my sleep schedule. Had to sit in traffic for several hours til they cleared the road and that's why I got home so late.

scrmblr, All is not a dead horse, just got to resolve a few problems here and meantime look for a truck. Keep them briquettes warmed up, i may show up anyway! Looks like I may end up with a 4 wheel drive whether i want it or not, doesn't seem to be much selection otherwise.

Be back tomorrow after some meetings!

didn't you just have eye surgery not too long ago? you might want to get that checked. you've been looking at my underwear modeling pic again haven't you? raise your eyes a little higher. you're staring at my package again. my gut is the area with the pelvic vein popping out which holds the promise of power

2NutSpy,

i tested the thor pretty good last night before the moon came up. i bet i saw a dozen coyotes with it that i never saw with the pvs14 or the d740, even with an ir light. granted they were in tall grass and weeds, but it makes me wonder what else i've been missing.

then i checked a pivot system with the nv. no hogs. i checked with the thor and two were at the center but the pivot light blinded that area from my vision. i'm pretty impressed with it.

i understand the relationship between obj size, magnification and exit pupil diameter with day scopes. what does a larger obj lens on a thermal do?

Modeling pic?......3 things wrong with that hypothesis....1) I don't swing the way you are implying, 2) If that is all you have to show for yourself, you have my sympathy, 3) you haven't looked like that your whole life....You've probably always been the pudgy person you are now. Also, that pelvic vein you are referring to, is being pushed out by the underlying blubber!

Even it that had been you in the picture, would understand why they dropped your contract. Go back and advertise "Depends for Men". More suitable to your build and sh*tty disposition......:D
