In the Ear? Really???

Coy, they wore ear pieces like headphones that were especially made to counter the frequency of the 50's firing. I do imagine after a while it did diminish their hearing though. They also sat down inside between the barrels and were surrounded by 1/2" steel which I'm sure knocked off some of the decibels.

The thing that amazed me was that the guy inside could open or close the vertical distance on each side and close or open the distance between the two sides and the good operators could engage multiple targets through the periscope or concentrate fire at one spot.

Why? you thinking about getting one?....:D

Here's a picture of a trailerable one at a museum from WW II with someone sitting in it. The wheels laying on the ground bolted on so it could be towed. I don't see the periscope I remember, though. Seems to be slightly different from what I remember, but could be wrong. Could be they modified them for Nam.

Could be my memory is failing, only been about 48 years.. They were originally developed as anti-aircraft weapons.

If you get one, I'd be willing to help you set it up...........YOU buy the ammo!..:)

OK, got a question for ya'll out there. I need a bigger Gun Safe and I was looking at the Modular Gun safes in American Rifleman.

Anybody bought and used one? Good, Bad indifferent?

Thanks for any input.

BTW, the Gun safe isn't because I have so many guns, I need it for the donated weapons to refurbish for Veterans Programs. When I get my FFL, am sure they are going to be required to be secured nightly.

The reason I am looking at a modular is apparently they can be disassembled and moved without a crane or having to have it delivered by 8 men and a boy to hold their coats.

C'mon, someone has to have tried one out!

I have always said, you should learn something new every day. Unfortunately, many of us are at that age where what we learn today, we forget by tomorrow. Lately I've been involved extensively with thoughts of the "hereafter". I go to the store then walk around for an hour trying to remember what am I "Hereafter!

Packrat,

How quick did the operator go deaf??? I had friends in Nam talk about those quad 50's on a new firebase. They said the same thing about the trees.

Yeah, I've got it figured that 4 of these things in Washington State could replace all of the loggers left after the Spotted Owl fiasco.

Speaking of environmentalist nightmares, the governments latest brainstorm is to transfer all of the National Parks to the individual State control. the ones they want to transfer are the high visibility parks and the remainder would be sold off to "Select Corporate Groups' (Read Sierra Club, Greenpeace, etc.) depriving access to most of the public lands now available to multipurpose uses like Hunting, camping, Fishing and all other outdoor use. These lands belong to us, not the Government! Check it out at sportsmansaccess.org.

duhjones: Just how big do you think my underwear drawer is anyway?...I know mine is bigger than yours though, cause I change daily and you've already admitted back earlier in the thread that your underwear accumulates more skid marks than a Freeway accident before you change them.

Not really concerned with hiding them, just need a place to secure them.

Don't know what I expect from someone who's personal motto is:
"Now that food has replaced sex in my life, I can't even get into my own pants". :D

Been so busy lately that I forgot about posting the chronological sequence of the djones family, so need to up date the postings. Now getting into the area where records can tell us a little about the individuals in the djones family tree, not all of whom ate bananas

Well it seems that in the days prior to Photo shop, djones present day may have inherited his Predilections for posing with fabricated photo's from past generations of the Jones family. As Sir Edmond Jones, as pictured above aptly demonstrates. Unfortunately, immediately after this picture was taken, the Bear did wake up and removed Sir Jones leg at about his throat! If you will look closely and then go back into this thread, you will notice that the bowed legs seem to be an inherited trait.

OK, on another subject, time is fast running out for you to order your genuine Mexican Sombreros for the Cinco de Mayo celebration coming up slightly after the end of this month.

To continue with the Jones family album, as frontiers were pushed westward, the group known as the Mountain men continued blazing new trails into the Rocky Mountains mainly searching for beaver, which was all the fad in Europe and among those effimenates concerned with fashion in the Eastern part of the U.S.

One such person blazing these trails was Ebenezer Jones, who decided that if he made the trip into the mountains, then returned back to St. Lewis, the girls would fall all over him as a semi-retired Mountain man.

When gathered in a group somewhere in the vicinity of what is now Yellowstone park, someone in the group commented that there was a Bear prowling around the perimeter of their camp. Ebenezer, who's total experience with Bears had been the Black Bears located back East where he had come from, and trying to impress the others, told the others, that he'd just go shoo the bear off. Not even stopping to put on his moccassins and leggings he crossed the creek headed in the direction of where the Bear had been sighted. The picture below, painted somewhat after the fact was the last sight any of the others had of him and was compiled from multiple descriptions of what had occurred.

Rumors later circulated that he had been seen back in St. Louis selling newspapers on a street corner, but were never verified.

A while back, and I've looked for it, but can't seem to find it, someone made a comment about Democrats and how they were ruining the country. Now I'm a registered independent, but some of my closest friends are Democrats, and others are Republicans and most of them are hunters and shooters and are staunchly pro 2nd amendment!

Most of the Democrats that I talk to at the local level are just as PO'd that the Liberals, Progressives, Trans-nationals or whatever you want to call them have Shanghaied the party hierarchy and are resorting to mainly distortions, spin and untruths about what is going on, with the backing of the national press. What is occurring cannot be laid to rest at the feet of one party or another, but is being manipulated by both parties, to the detriment of the American Public.

There are good Democrats and programs, and there are good Republicans and programs and there are also a whole bunch of about 40% of us that are Independent because we want to vote for what we consider the best thing for the American way of life, Democrat or Republican. However because of antiquated State laws and Status Quo regulations, the independents in this country get very little representation and won't until the laws are changed to allow us representation.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that if you don't like what is going on, then you need to try and help change it. Name calling or trying to place blame about either party is counterproductive, and until the "Silent Majority" start raising hell with our elected politicians, it's not going to change. For a change, politicians need to represent and be accountable to the people that elected them rather than some Lobbyist or special interest group. The law should be simple, if it's not in the best interest of the country as a whole, then they should be prosecuted.

Just food for thought!

This will probably be deleted by LRH as they have done with several other of my posts, because after all this is a Hog forum, not a political discussion group, but maybe enough will read it and get actively involved to help bring out the much needed change.

You're just mad because my Jones Family Album is getting too close to where you live..... So far have shown from the beginning where you are getting or not getting those traits that make you what you are, which is a few bricks shy of a full load!

Besides, I'm not advocating going out and hanging all the Lawyers and Politicians from street lights.........But then again, you've got to start somewhere......Could be one of my better ideas!......:D

Just that we all need to hang together or we'll all hang separately...(don't remember who said that, but think it was Patrick Henry)

As far as being banned, Am working on a deal with LRH where I will start posting ads from the LRH store on my posts. Still working out the commiss......terms.

You now, have been sitting here thinking. Only 10 -12 more days and there will be a major change in my life. I mean djones is fat and ugly, and I'm blind, but in 10 more days, I'll be able to see again and he's still going to be fat and ugly.....:D.

Seriously, the way its started was I started losing points on the NRA medium range course with the National Match rifle and so rather than admit I was getting old and maybe my eyes were going bad, I ordered out a new Springfield Super Match. There's an old saying my dad used to tell me about that poor mechanic always blamed his tools first. Guess I fell into that syndrome cause when I started shooting the SM, it didn't get any better. After about 250 rounds with the SM,, I put it away and it hasn't been shot since.

That was several years ago and over time it has just gotten worse. I joke about having a super sized monitor, but seriously I have a 27" monitor and unless I get about a foot from the screen, I can't read it. It started with the targets getting a little fuzzy, and blurring out, particularly the 600 yard target. then pretty soon, it was the 400 yard target and it just progressed from there. Last August, in Washington State, my 13 year old Grandaughter out shot me at the 100 yard line and none of my kids had ever been able to beat me at that particular range. The particular target I was shooting at was just a blur seeming to be about 18" diameter. High power scopes just seemed to worsen the problem sort of like shooting across heat waves and how they magnify in a scope.

Anyway, people, the last several years haven't been a lot of fun, except for giving David Jones a bad time on this site, so if things start seeming to get a little fuzzy, get your eyes checked. Hopefully some good prescription lenses will help your condition. And if you do develop problems, Cataracts are easy and fairly inexpensive to correct, once they reach the point where they have "ripened"enough that they can be removed, which for me has taken about 2 years. At least it was Cataracts and not Macular Degeneration which isn't correctable, at least in today's Medicine.

It just took more time away from shooting than I ever wanted to give up!

fat and ugly??? where's an lrh cop when you need one. that shudda lease get u probation. maybe ull be able to see well nuf pretty soon, but i can get a make over and go on weight watchers.

back to hogs... i've hunted with a few folks in my time, but i've never encountered anyone with such a disdain for hogs as coy. no pigs are safe with him around. the term 'save some for seed' means absolutely nothing to him. big ones, little ones, male, female, young, old, wounded or healthy... they all get the same treatment. and he seems to take such pleasure from the carnage.

i don't now what he loads, but after i ran out and still hadn't hit anything, he gave me some of his bullets to shoot at one standing about 200 yards away, shell shocked and frozen in fear. i could barely see it but a lucky shot blew his hiney off. really! and it killed him!!!
