7 PRC SAAMI approved

I wonder what they were thinking? Catering to the Tikka lovers out there? I'm guessing it will more or less duplicate a 7mm Rem Mag? So you get no belt and better chamber design to compete with one of the most popular chamberings out there? Maybe they have something else in mind. Their last podcast on the 6.5 PRC they went on for a bit about not caring about what action lengths were available and that the manufacturers need to build guns to fit their cartridges not the other way around. Either I am missing something or this one is going to be "meh" which is too bad as the last designs were really solid, 6mm ARC, 6.5 PRC, 300 PRC, etc.

I can't believe this surprises anyone
It's literally tracking perfectly with the PRC legacy.

Look at the creedmore, basically zero improvement over the .260 Rem

Lets not forget that the 6.5 PRC capacity is about 1.5 grains over the already optimized 6.5x284 for maybe a 25 fps gain..

The 300 PRC is identical to the 300 WM, and lags behind even a saami 30 Nos.

If Hornady was smart, They would name their new cartridge, "7mm PRC Creedmoor, Just by doing so , It could instantly shoot 4 miles with zero drop, Zero copper fouling, Could place first at any long range match, The list could go on.

I'm still personally excited for this cartridge but I'm also just a fan of the 7mm in general.

The way I see it is they are setting up a case, with a more modern twist rate and design, to be able to have factory loadings of the more popular bullets. Sure people have been doing the same thing with custom twisted 7mmRem Mags and other wildcats which one could definitely argue are more powerful.

However, I would assume that the majority of shooters/hunters still tend to just buy a factory rifle and use factory ammo. This 7PRC has a indicated twist of 1:8 which not only should stabilize the heavy for caliber bullets easily but should also allow for more factory offerings of copper mono bullets which seem to be becoming more popular.

I personally would love to try this cartridge in a 20" tube and see what performance would be compared to a 7mm Rem Mag and the 7SAUM.

playing with some numbers in quickdesign it looks like it will have 2.5gr more capacity than the wsm and 8gr more than saum. looks like they didnt fix the tight chamber problem so you can look forward to the same problems they have with the other PRC cases. the usable case capacity when loaded to fit most factory mags will be close to the 7RM. not to bad will work good for those wanting to use their exsisting rifle with just a simple barrel change

Ok if that's true then it should outperform the 7 RM and maybe work in a med length action?
The 7 wsm is honestly one of my favorites and at 82 grains capacity it's identical to the 7RM.
Something around 85 grains in a tikka length action would actually be pretty sweet for a short barreled suppressed setup

these are quickdesign default # and usually are +/- 1.5gr
7SAUM 76.1
7WSM 82.0
7RM 86.8
7PRC 84.5
i dont think that a mid length action would be best choice unless you stay with the shorter, lighter offerings but is doable and would make a nice suppressed set up. if you put the Berger 168 classic hunter at 3.2 oal would still have less bullet in the case compared to the 180 ELDM at 3.340 oal.
It looks like a 168 CH at 3.2 in a 20" barrel could get 2950-3000 fps. not too shabby.
