7 mm SHERMAN SHORTMAG vs 7 SAUM

I run a TL3 as well. My 7SS is a 26" Proof carbon Sendero profile. I run 180 ELD-M's at 2843 with 60.1gr of H1000 in ARC AICS magazines. Likely another 25-50fps with Berger 180's that have shorter bearing surface but the ballistic gains don't justify the cost in my budget. Using RL26 or N565 would get another 100-150fps as well. Extremely happy with my setup, devastating on caribou this year and that 180 ELD-M is like cheating the wind compared to the 140 ELD-M in my 6.5 Creedmoor

Hi WiscGunner,

I'm curious, since I have ARC mags myself, how do you comply with hunting regs in your 7SS set up using ARC mags?

We don't have round count restrictions for rifles in Michigan, Wisconsin or Alaska. Do you have magazine restrictions where you are?

There are of course 5rnd AICs magazine and flush-ish magazines from Curtis and I believe one other place. If you are in Colorado it appears the magazine capacity restriction is for semi-auto rifles not for bolt actions but I could be wrong so double check. Remember these don't actually hold the full amount with a magnum case like they do with a .308 sized case

Copy on all. I took the time to consult the colorado Reg page 14.

A 6 round mag capaciry only applies to semi auto! I can't tell you how many people are miss quoting that law for rifles.

I never had to cobsider it because my 338 Edge and others hold three maybe four but I tricked out a 7mm08 and ran Hawkins bottom metal with ARC mags and believed the common consensus that a 5 round mag was max.

Glad I came across this tread...and learned something in the process

FYI - I see PVA just dropped another 7mm offering. This one is also a hunting solid at 170gr with a BC of .375

I have not affiliation with Patriot Valley Arms except being a happy customer. Happy to see more options come to market with high BC solids for hunting though. I asked about minimum velocity for expansion and was told 1650-1700fps. I don't doubt the BC claims as this comes from the same designer of the Warner Flatlines. I just hope the BC doesn't come at a sacrifice of proper expansion with too small a hollow point.

Those 170 gr projectiles have my attention, especially since they are made for 1:8 tw…….the 151's are meant for 1:9, so not sure how they will shoot from my 1:8 twist barrel.

The 170's really have my attention as well, especially if they are gettign 3100 out of a 20" 7SS. I am sure that is a hotter load than H1000 but I have a 26" barrel so these should hang pretty close to the 180 ELD'M. The 151's need a minimum of 1:9 but as solids you really can't over spin them like a jacketed bullet so they will be fine in a 1:8, just extra stable.

@5RWill while RL23 isn't RL26 it will get you 3000fps with the 168gr Berger in a 22". Looking through my notes at some preliminary data it looks like I called max at 61.3gr at ~3010fps. That data is really preliminary because I had screwed up my CBTO measurement and was also having difficulty reading pressure signs on the ADG brass with an ARC Nucleus bolt face. Long story short, I don't have that barrel anymore but am having another 7SS built right now. Next time I do load development I'll measure the case head and see...max might actually be a little higher (at like 3030-3050). I had a low node at 2970 w/ 60.6gr and I like my brass to last awhile so I used that.

I have a 7 Sherman max with a 26" proof 8 twist. I'll be testing the 151 Cayuga tomorrow for pressure w/ rl26. I've tried the 122 Cayuga in my 6.5 prc and Holy F it goes, 63.8 gr rl26 run 3500fps through a 23" barrel.
Guys, my labradar was on the fritz today. Missed most my rl26/151 solids and N570/180vld pressure tests. I do have solid numbers on the RL23/151 solids. 63gr rl23 w/ 151 did 3081, top charge of 68 did 3331, top 2 charges were compressed I did 1 grain steps.
71gr N570 w/ 180vld went 3145 with clear ejector. 65gr went 2966
I didn't get a single **** round of the RL26/151 test. Honestly the best shooting of all was the 151/RL23 where 3 rounds in the middle charges went into one big hole. I've found these solids to be quite finicky on seating depth in the 122gr 6.5 variant. 40k off shot best today @ 3/4" going 3365 average. I'm going to bump powder by 0.2 and see if I can get it closer to thr 3380-3390 node I saw in the psi test and play around with seating depth on the 40k off area. All the 151s were loaded what I believe is 20k off in the max, but who knows, they don't have a normal nose to measure ogive, thr drive band is under gauge to bore and that's what you use for determining jump. All I have as of today, hope to get more info early next week.
