7 mm SAUM build ideas

Indeed, I'm torn btw short and long actions. I would like to be able 180 grain bullet but would also like the build to remain compact and relatively light... are these desires mutually exclusive?
Will a half inch in action length between short and long make that much difference? Eat one less cheese burger for lunch.

hi David, im 6'2" and 190#, deadlift over 400, bench nearly 300 and run 6:30 miles at 43 years old. Certainly nothing to write home about, but perhaps adequate to carry a rifle... I did not write this to boast, just to explain my issue is not the gunweight. It is more of the length of the gun getting caught in trees and alders.
Thank you regardless.
any thought on remington mod seven once produced in 7 mm SAUM?

I did not mean to insult you. I wish I was in your shape. But at 63 I think that is dreaming. In this business people get caught up in fads and monkey see and monkey do. My point was a half inch of steel would not add much weight. These days there are bullets as long as your big toe. A long action would never limit you on cartridge length. As I write this I am waiting on a reamer and barrel to build a F class gun for a customer in 7 prc. With a 183 sierra seated with the shank at the neck shoulder junction it measures 3.065. If you put a wyatts box on a short action remington you get right at 3 inches. If you use a bullet not so long it would work fine . And I want to add to get the performance I would use a 23 to 25 inch barrel. Takes length to burn powder. I wish you the best in your decision and if you would like to pm me I would be happy to discuss all. When I hunt the beltrami I use a 7x57 I barreled in a model 70 super grade with a 23 inch barrel. Sweet little gun that kills whatever I point it at. Wall tent and wood smoke. Hard to beat.

Hi David,
Thank you for your kind lines, and you certainly did not offend me. I did not mean to boast either -and there are people in way better shape than me- just wanted to clarify that not physical limitations drive my selection, more of lack of knowledge and funds... thank you for the info on the max COALmeith short actions. I may indeed pm you with some more questions. Thank you!

In your budget: Tikka magnum long action donor, hells canyon billet magazine, Mesa Precision altitude or jcs composites tactical carbon stock, barrel of your choice, I'd go with a bartlein fluted 2B, or carbon #4 running it 22-24". Use adg/gunwerks brass and stomp on it with RL26. I'd think 2900+ would be very doable with 175/180gr bullets. I have a 6.5 saum, 300wsm, 6.5 prc and 6.5 Sherman max all built of tikkas with carbon barrels and lighter carbon stocks or magnesium chassis. They all shoot well and have been very affordable builds.

I got a bit off track. I have never used a 7saum in a remington but I had one in a ruger. With a 22 inch barrel it was a dog. But often factory barrels are slow. I guess if I were you and on a tight budget I would look for a remington or model 70 and barrel it. I mean a used beater. Blueprint a model 70 and put on a good barrel and they are no slouch. Also controlled round feed. You can use the factory wood stock. If sealed and glass bedded they will shoot. If you desire a better stock at a later time no problem. The model 70 is easier. Even a 243 or 308 can easily be opened to a mag bolt face. A small remington and you need to get a PTG bolt. By the time you get done it is 300. You can open a remington but then you need to put in a m16 or sako extractor. Model 70 is much easier and clean. Just avoid the late new haven model 70,s. Pretty messy.

I have a Remington Model Seven SS in 7 SAUM with the factory 22" barrel. I love it. It shoots 160 grain Partitions 2980fps and 160 grain Accubonds 2950fps with equal accuracy. I've never had any issues with the factory magazine length.

I killed my first elk with it last year.

Like N2TRKYS, I have a Model 7 SS in 7 SAUM with the 22" barrel. My load for it is 140gr Partitions at just over 3000fps. I know I could get a little more speed, but it shoots very well, and I'll take the accuracy over a little more speed. I wouldn't say the Model 7 is a long range gun, but the weight is reasonable and it is a practical hunting rifle. I just installed a Timney trigger and with the scope, I still have less than $1k in the gun.

I'm planning a 7 SAUMbuild myself. I've done a few conversion of Remington 700s to use the Bainey 3.11" box and to use AICS mags but not for a 7 SAUM. I've CAD'ed out the cases and bullets. The 168s fit easily in an Accurate Mag DBM and I liked shooting those out of my 7 RM. The 180 VLDs appear to fit in the Bainey mag with the bearing surface at the neck shoulder junction. I've also played with the new 175 bullet and its CBTO appears to be longer than the 180 by an appreciable amount. I'm trying to make a Defiance AnTi SA work but need to call them to see if they can inlet for the Bainey and if the bolt stop can be moved back far enough. If not, then its going to be a or LA or a converted Rem 700 SA. If you get a LA, then you could easily convert to a 28 Nosler if the SAUM isn't good enough.

I built one on a Deviant SA with a 25" 8 twist Bart #3. I've played with it in a few different stocks over the years. I use a Wyatt's box with Hawkins bottom metal. No issue shooting 180 Scenars at 2925fps in Norma brass with 4831SC. You don't need a medium or long action unless you just want it. A shorter action is stiffer and it allows you to add barrel length at the same overall length. Mine is a laser. Half MOA on a bad day. I highly recommend Matt Stewart to chamber it. Killed a bull in CO last year at 444 - he made a quarter turn away and dropped on the spot. I'd make anyone interested a deal on a McMillan Hunter's Edge SA or a Manners EH6 SA

I really like the 7saum
Mine is built on a Remy 700 short action. With a wyatts mag to seat at 2.9+
26 inch #4 broughton
It just shoots phenomenal all the time.
180 hybrids at 3k+
Testing the new Hammer AH bullet in it and it pushes that 155 grain @ 3348 fps Es of 6.
