I 'probably' wouldn't. It's mostly extra weight. If you've got a rifle you are able to 'wield', the sidearm is permanently relegated to backup duties.

Why carry two hammers when you only plan to use one?

Now, if carrying a sidearm wasn't overly cumbersome, why not?
Your decision. Not mine. It's all good.

Most everybody here has something they have thought about for SHTF, at least as far as firearms go, but weight is a big factor right after availability. I've been wanting to put in my 2 cents so I guess I'll get it over with. Because these are the most common cartridges in the basic five smokeless firearm types; and they cover 99% + of the purposes you'd want a firearm for they are what I recommend to anyone that asks about prepping.

22LR - Rimfire
9mm - Pistol
12ga. - Shotgun
.223/5.56 - Centerfire Carbine
.308/7.62 - Centerfire Rifle

After you have those you can think about heavier, or favorites. While your at it go ahead and get something for anti-material & extreme long range sniping. Maybe get a yourself Gatling Gun for the big hordes lol. BTW don't forget 10 years of food and ammo for yourself and your loved ones too.

Haven't heard anybody mention Communications, Geo-Caching, Priest Holes or Tiger Pits yet. Though the gasoline sprinkler system was a pretty hot idea. It makes the point that there is a lot you can do with construction & landscaping. For example metal roofs with wild fire suppression sprinklers, impenetrable hedges, infra red spotlights and cameras, kill zones and firing lanes, but I guess that's really a whole different thread.
Was just "attempting" to limit conversation to ammo and components. But oh well, it's gotten a lot bigger. Its a talk forum. Course this could go forever if we talked about every aspect. But comms would be necessary IF you have a need to communicate with others. Some don't. This could go on endlessly. What can of worms have i opened? Hhhmmm.......

Pick up a1000 rounds of 45 ACP

Thanks for opening this can, thought provoking and entertaining. Don't get the sea shells either, also not trying to🤪.

Ouch. Never did figure that seashell thing out...
At least it's not like the gorilla I saw take a scoop of "pâte" and toss it on a lettuce leaf and eat it at the Omaha zoo once... I guess the Japanese have been able to make that stuff taste like steak in a lab... They couldn't pay me enough...

I'm old haha and my hips groan in the hills with too much carry weight. I would like the side arm but I could get by and do quite a bit more with the M4. So if I was leaving one behind it would be the sidearm.
I'm old too. Older than I care to admit. I hope your aim is true and your ammo plentiful!

If it all went to hell and a handbasket, what guns are MANDATORY for you? For me, it would be:
.22LR
.45 ACP
9mm
12 GA
5.56/223
.308
Even during the ammo/parts shortages of recent years and the pandemic, I could still find what I needed. And let's face it, these are found almost everywhere. Keep in mind the problems/events of the day.

What about you guys?
Tactical 12 870
AR-15/AR-10
Every handgun i can carry with all ammo for each one.
