order of preference longest distance for deer:
1. 280AI
2. 308
3. Shotgun
I may try out a 270 win this year for a NY deer hunt and I want to try a 6.5cm next year. I would level to get a 30-30 lever action for short range deer hunting just seems like a cool gun.

How did I know you would say that?
My old .270 with 150 grain works great, but I love my 25-06 too. I have to rotate the .243 and 308s in also or they might get jealous.

I've killed the most with my 7mm-08, and I have the strongest loyalty to it. But my 280AI is catching up fast.

Ruger M77 in 260 Rem. Just works. Also have a soft spot for the 1951 Marlin 336 in 35 Rem. Works well for our Pa woods. First deer I shot in 2000 fell to a 35 Rem.

That is a caliber/model pairing I have always wanted! Maybe it'll come out again someday.

243 win is my go to deer gun paired with quality ammo is plenty to get the job done

My best for whitetails in 120 Hornady SST in my 6.5 creedmoor. I use Varget @ 2800 +

Big fan of the 280,but love my 308. That being said my biggest buck was shot with a 6 mm. Wife's biggest shot with a 260 before the 6.5 CM was in existence. Hard to choose just one. 41 mag is favorite sidearm followed by 45 LC and 44 a distant 3rd.
