Well if I had to choose one round and one only although I have a soft spot for my .257 Roy. I always have to go back to the .300 win mag. It covers the whole spectrum of critters you may want.

:D No need to feel slighted. Welcome to the forum. Most of us started out in the same manner as most hunters, and only knew the basics, because that was the only things the people who taught us knew, as well. I've learned more in the last 10 years of being on this forum, than I did in the 22 years prior. There's lots of good info here. Guys like WildRose and JE Custom and several others on here are a wealth of knowledge.

What is your main goal for the rifle? Targets? Hunting? Any specific game, or all-around hunting? This will help us narrow down the selection to help you better choose which one to go with that will fit your needs the best.
Deer and elk hunting. My daughter and I both have em. Mine is a model 700 sps. Hers is a model 700 laminate, beautiful gun but heavy in comparison to mine. I've offered to put a synthetic stock on hers but she's not having it. When she finally gets around to squeezing off it's dead animal. My goal is find a load that will shoot under a 1/2". Right now both are shooting just under an inch. I think I can do better

The .270 WSM is a "laser" with, the right Bullet/ load and Kills,.. very well !
A .300 Mag/ .338 Mag,.. is NOT necessary,.. to kill Elk,.. my Dad did it with, a .30-06, 50 years ago, one shot w/ a 150 grain Nosler Partion ( pass thru and, dead Elk @ 200 ). My son and I killed 2 Elk this year, one with a 7mm-08 ( 150 ELD-X ) one with, a .270 WSM, using the 140 AccuBond,.. BOTH dead, ONE,.. SHOT each! But the "what Caliber wars", go on and on and on,.. LOL !! Have I ever mentioned that,.. I HATE,.. RECOIL !

My favorite deer cartridge is a 7WSM. I also had a lot of success out west with both a 7mm and 300 BEE. Had 2 STW's, and there are no fly's on that one. But, when something really needs killin, and it might be far, windy, or I just don't want to go home empty handed no matter what, my 300RUM accompanies me on the trip. Seems like it will get the job done no matter what, as long as I do my part. Others will get it done too, but the 30-378 I had just had too much blast to shoot, and anything bigger has to be too heavy for me to carry much if I want to shoot it well.

How dare no one say the 6.5 creed. You must have had your head in the Sand for the last few years.
It's the only round anyone needs. Factory rounds will take the average guy and make him a bench rest champ. Plus you can take it out and shoot elk at 1500 yards.
It's exactly like the .300 win mag!! But much better.
I might add its perfect for unicorns.

Choosing a caliber for an all around hunting rifle can be daunting for a new or even experienced hunter. After owning several .30 caliber magnums and not liking the weight of these guns, I finally settled on the .270 wsm. My daughter and I both have them and I have found that this caliber has all the qualities i could want in a deer and elk killer. My kid loves hers
I bought my oldest daughter one of these when she graduated HS. She has killed a lot of game with it. Her longest shot so far was a doe last year a little over 600. Don't think you could pry it away from her with a jackhammer.

You should look into the 7mm SS (Sherman Shortmag). It sounds like the perfect do-all cartridge for y'all. Rich Sherman is also a member here, and he is also always willing to help and answer questions. His username is "elkaholic".

I picked .30 caliber. I actually like shooting my .270 better but I just don't think it's enough power for everything.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe the .270 win has killed more elk than any other caliber. My buddies dad killed 63 bulls on the Olympic peninsula with the same .270, my buddy took 23 bulls in Oregon with his .270. Sadly he's no longer with us.
