In the Ear? Really???

The stand that has hogs, try one of my dad's baits.

Take a 5 gal. bucket with a tight fitting lid. Fill it abou 3/4 full with untreated corn. The

store bought "Deer Corn, Not for human consumption" works good. Put some beer in it,

I use dark or the strongest that somebody leaves that I don't like. I like to put enough to

bring it to the top of the corn. It doesn't have to be real fresh, open overnight is fine.

What you are after is the yeast. I sometimes add packs of yeast from the store and

sometimes I have added some sugar. Seal the bucket and set it where sun can get on it

most of the day. Let it sit a week or so. When you open it you basically have corn mash.

I'm pretty sure you know what that is. Infact if you know one of the 'ol boys, you might

ask for his used up mash. Put that out for bait. If there's any hogs down wind they will

be there soon. I try to put mine out when the breeze is blowing toward the swamp.

Try it, You'll like it ! Good luck, Paul P.S. I've went through there about 10 yrs. ago. Sounds like it's really grown since then too.

I've tried making sour mash to attract hogs. I used a case of Milauwakee's Best beer, a pack of yeast, and 200 lbs of corn to attract hogs a few years ago. They never touched the stuff. I put out a trail cam, but in 3 weeks I only had photos of raccoons and buzzards.

For the hogs, there is so much to eat where I hunt. You'll find a 50 acre bean field here, a 100 soybean field over there, and so on and so on. It's is impossible to pin them to a certain area.

Are packrat and djones friends???....
that depends on which one of us you ask. he will tell you i'm his best friend, and that may very well be true even tho i don't like him all that much.

been rained out for several days, and other duties willl shut me down for the rest of the week. don't worry tho, pak will start the reruns soon (not to be confused with pak getting the runs)

we can have all the guns you do but most of them you have to shoot at the range you cant hunt with them!! Like we can have AR's but we cant hunt with them same goes with pistols!! I think most any shotgun we can hunt with!! And any bolt action gun!! and I think the barrel has to be longer that 18.5 in!!

Can't what to see some more dead pigs and also some fighting:)!!!!!

How bad are the winters?

djones, just how long are you going to be playing not only the sad old song about you thinking I want to be your best friend, but still making excuses why you haven't any hog pictures. So with your limited memory retention while reading my posts, let's take them one by one:

1) As far as you being my best friend, i have about as much inclination to claim you as a best friend as you have to take a bath or change your underwear more than twice a month, if that often. I know that you probably have a few "upwind" friends who's personal hygiene is similar to yours, but that is why they are called "Upwind" friends ....everyone else stays upwind! I do NOT belong to this group.

2) As far as being rained out, you've used that same excuse for the last month and a half and everyone knows that Texas just don't get that much rain this time of year. Morning Fog, does not count as rain! Quit trying to blame the weather for your inability to locate or shoot hogs. As far as other duties, delaying your hunting, you haven't gotten a TPS report in on time for the last several years so why worry about it now!

3) You claimed you were retiring, but have begun to think that you meant that you were going to bed. Why should I post re-runs, if you are still going to actively hunt hogs? Over the course of this thread there have been periods of up to 3 weeks when you didn't respond, post pictures or post anything! If there is anything on this thread that you have been consistent at, it has been being inconsistent.

And as far as my getting the runs, that normally never happens, however I do develop an urge to regurge every time I see your picture and without a hog in the picture also, the picture would have absolutely no redeeming value at all.

OK, so from now on, drink the beer, have your wife make bread with the yeast and make a whole bunch of corn tortilla's for Taco's, then go shoot some raccoons and buzzards and post the pictures........:)

I think Coy has a recipe for Raccoon Taco's!

well done dns. that's close enuf. people were looking at me funny as i was dancing in my chair to the music at the end.

questions for you, if you don't mind...

if your scope has 3x optical magnification, and you have a digital zoom of say 1,2,4,and 8 for example, does that translate to 3, 6, 12 and 24 power (yes pack i can multiply, albeit with a calculator)?

so there is no real 1x that you could use to see while driving, right? have you tried driving with the 1.5x? how's that work?

do you ever have a need or use for anything over 6 or 8 power in a nighttime weapon sight?

finally... is it correct to say the 60Hz offers smoother tracking of running hogs than 30Hz.. ceteris paribus of course hehe?

DNS,

Nice shooting! I'm glad that someone is getting to kill something. I went out this morning, but didn't see a thing. Next chance for me will be Wednesday morning.

Got my memory cards from 5 trail cams this am, but only had photos of does, turkey, and raccoons.

I'm encouraging my wife to spend a week or so with her grandmother. I think that bonding with family is very important. Especially if it gets me a week of hunting!

scram,
i hate to post this... but ratpak pm'ed me and asked me if i would see if you could post pics of your grandmother. sorry.

I danced in my chair as well, but I do it in the dark. And, oh BTW, the actual shot was 90 yards.

Wow! So many good questions.

Yes on the magnification. For whatever reason, I assume it is for ease of programming, the number at the bottom of the screen during zooming is the number of times that the native resolution is multiplied. So on a 1.5x scope, "2X" at the bottom means 3x digital magnification. On a 3x scopes, "2X" at the bottom means 6x digital magnification. I note that it is digital magnification because 1) it is, and 2) because it jump higher cuts the resolution by 75%. So if with no zoom, the scope is 640x512 resolution, at 2X it is 320x256 and at 4x, it is 160x128, etc.

I have not tried driving with 1.5x, but I have tried walking around and it really isn't too bad, but by the time you get up to 2x native resolution, things are definitely looking wrong. Both do affect your depth perception and in thermal, the problem is worse, magnification or no magnification. Thermal offers very for depth perception capability.

Do I ever more than 6 or 8 power on a night time weapon sight? Sure, if I have anything out beyond 150-250 yards and it is standing still, I want a lot of magnification.

It is correct to say that 60hz would be smoother, plus show more detail during action sequences, at least through the scope right now. It also burns up batteries much faster as well. Right now, pretty much all the DVRs on the market that a person is apt to carry on their rifle or in their pocket are just 30hz as well. So even if the scope is 60hz, the video will only be 30hz. That will undoubtedly change in the future. On a side note, the human eye only really discerns (itself) about 25 hz. Slower than 25hz will look choppy, but most folks aren't really bothered by it for slow action even down to 15hz.

I went with 30hz scopes because they are quite functional and the batteries last longer.
