In the Ear? Really???

Having trouble with my computer. there is a conflict between two of the programs the Company recently upgraded for security purposes and when I hit the submit reply button at the bottom of the post, what I had written disappeared....Darn! Not only on this site.

The IT department told me today, they would fix it tomorrow and what the problem is so don't know if this is going to show up or not. if it doesn't, let me know!.....

Anyway, a question for Coy......How is Texas about running ATV's and 4 wheel drives in dry riverbeds?...Reason I ask is that if they catch you here in Arizona, is a substantial fine, even though the wash locally runs through was was at one time a local dumping ground and is full of trash that keeps washing out of the bank.

Reason I'm asking is that there is a dry riverbed alongside the ranch in Texas that the Hogs run into and we have discussed chasing them down with the ATV's, but neither one of us knows what the rules are. Do you? Anyone else? Where would I look to find out?

Anyway, glad to see someone else posting so will check in tomorrow after they fix this damned computer.

Well, after hours of the IT department screwing around with my computer by remote control, they finally found the problem and resolved the issue. They originally called at about 04:30 this morning, because of the time difference between here and D. C., and seemed put out when I told them to call back at a reasonable hour. Seems they had gone in early and forgotten the time difference between here and the East coast....Dumb S**ts.

John, my Archer friend called earlier and asked if I had a Feather Jig. told him yes, i had several in a couple of different sizes. Said he'd be over in a little bit so I went out to the garage and got down my Salt water tackle box. When he showed up, he was flabbergasted that I had Salt water fishing jigs. What he wanted was feather cutting jigs to heat cut feathers to the right shape to fletch his arrows. I told him I thought that was called a fletching jig, but anyway he went away mumbling.

After he left, I got to thinking about the terminology used that meant different things to different people. For example the term re-stocking. To me that meant that I changed the Stock from the plastic factory issue Remington 700 stock to the custom made wood stock, or re-ordering the bullets I use to hunt Hogs with, while to djones it meant replacing all the neighbors cows and horses he had shot while out hunting pigs.

Packrat,

I don't know about rivers/creeks anywhere but around me but if you own it you can do what ever you want. If its not yours and you get caught you can be shot or filed on for trespassing. The smaller river are mostly privately owned. I do know that the Canadian River and part of the Red River does have public access. A couple of weeks ago they had sand drags in the Canadian north of Amarillo. I have friends that 4-wheel in the Red during the summer. Quicksand can be a problem after a rain even on the river behind my house.

Coy,

Basically what you are saying is that whomever owns the land abutting the river, owns that portion of the river? Typically, you may own the river to the centerline or however they establish property lines within a riparian area, but usually the State or County , or someone tells you what you can and cannot do with it within the banks and whether or not you can deny access within the banks. For example, usually only the State, County or City can remove sand and gravel without reimbursement to the Property owner from within the banks of a waterway and without a permit even if it is technically part of your property. Can you remove sand from the river if you want to?

I know in Washington State, at a waterfront cabin on Puget sound, we cannot deny access to the public walking up and down the beach even though the Property line is surveyed to about 75' in front of the sea wall. They can't come up on that portion of the property that is considered part of the residence above the seawall, but we can't deny access to the beach between the mean High and low tide extremes.

Here in Arizona, the State has all the rights on what and what cannot be done even in a dry riverbed. It might have something to do with any water within a riverbed being used to recharge the Aquifers.

i guess I have to do more research on Texas riparian law, but haven't been real successful so far finding anything out. May have to call the State Department of Natural resources.

Anyway, thanks for the input.

"Basically what you are saying is that whomever owns the land abutting the river, owns that portion of the river?"

No, that is not what I'm saying. Draw a square. This is a section, 640 acres. Draw a river through the middle of it. This is your portion of the river. The property lines may be in the middle, the other side or a portion of the river if it angles across the corner of your section, quarter section etc. etc.. Only the big rivers (Canadian, Red) in my part of the world are controlled by a water authority or state agency. Both of these rivers are 1/2 mile across in some places. You can do just about anything you want to with it but dam it up. That is almost impossible for a landowner to do legally and money wise.

Coy,

Thanks for the explanation. I really do appreciate the time it took to answer.

BTW, have you heard anything from our host? A friend of mine that I shared several classes on Geochemistry with at the Colorado School of Mines stays in touch and keeps me informed if I ask him about current happenings in Texas and when I mentioned the case he looked it up. I heard that the charges were dropped, since his claim that he was not in effect mining and had no minerals from the river bed in his possession and was merely washing his kill. And in searching the records they found his license had been paid, but being so close to the new year, the clerk had out of habit put 2014 on the license instead of 2015.

Kind of unfortunate since I was looking forward to posting money to his book at the Prison store so he could buy a candy bar or Vaseline or whatever else he needed......:D

Got to admit, he's slicker than fresh duck cr*p on ice....

Anyway, I've been busier than a Goldfish in a shark tank at lunchtime, but will back on board in the next couple of days, probably starting tomorrow.

Thanks again.

i'm buzzie - that is all.

ps - coy, you mite wanna stay indoors sat nite. i cud be close by :)

Well, Well, Well.....The infamous Mr Jones finally makes his appearance again and only throws out a somewhat incomprehensible line he's Buzzie...Which I can only assume that means that he is fast falling under the influence of the Milo dust he snorts constantly.

Buzzie????....The correct spelling is Buzzard....and an Old Buzzard at that!

Coy, make sure you do stay indoors Saturday night, he can't hardly tell the front of a Hog from the rear anymore and there is no telling what he would think you were out there in the dark! Sasquatch probably. Would hate to see that picture posted.

On another subject, we got our first picture of what has been getting the local cats. the camera delivered up the following image and I can only say that Hollywood needs to keep better track of it's out of work employee's as this is the second one we have encountered locally! At first thought it was a feral hog with that snout, but someone living close by informed me that it is a Alien Life Form and is severely addicted to cats.

Well, Hollywood be damned, I can't wait to hang it's stuffed head on my wall, whatever it is

Will be back tomorrow evening after I finish up what has been going on here.

Apologies, have been busier than spin Doctor in Washington D.C.

As some f you may know, the year before last, before my wife and I had decided to move back to Washington State, I had initiated a program we called Weapons for Warriors in which we received donated, old closet Queen rifles, shotguns and 1 pistol, repaired and restored them, and then had them sold at the local Gun shows through a friendly FFL holder, with the proceeds above the restoration costs going to the Wounded Warriors program. In this manner, we donated approximately $1470.00 to the WW program. Several of the Shotguns had been donated straight across to youth shooting activities locally, where need had been shown.

When we had decided to move, I had tried to get someone to keep the program going, but most of the personnel, as volunteers, were so occupied with daily life that I couldn't find anyone to take over and run the program. In addition, I had disposed of the majority of my power tools such as Grinders and buffers, wire wheels, a small drill press and other tools useful for restoring the weapons.

Anyway, I have been doing more research and have decided that since we are going to be here for an extended time, to reactivate the program with several changes. One was to make the program totally legal, which it is, here in Arizona, so far, by getting my FFL. Not to show or sell the donations, but to simply be able to receive them without having to go through the hassle of having someone else received them and then transfer them to us. I have met with an attorney and will make the program a Non-profit and am having totally legal transfer papers drawn up. The previous transfer papers were adequate, but there was always a doubt in my mind because of the quantity of firearms that we were receiving.

Probably, to me the most surprising thing was that a $25.00 ad in the local Dandy Dime or thrifty Nickel brought such an response from people that didn't want the weapons. Out of all the weapons donated, only one had been reported as stolen and the owner, having collected (I suspect for more than it was worth) from the Insurance company didn't want it back, so it was turned over to the local Sheriffs office for disposal or for what ever they see fit to do with it. They have been most cooperative throughout which was enhanced by helping one of the major players in the Sheriffs office to restore his Grandfathers shotgun to a pristine condition. We have also received several donations from this source.

Anyway, that is why I haven't been posting and numerous phone calls have determined that lot of the previous volunteers have missed the program and the comeraderie (I think that is misspelled) and have decided that once active again, they will be coming back.

Anyway if anyone has questions or wants to start up their own program, please PM me as this forum is supposed to be donated to Hog Hunting, even though we haven't had many good pictures lately, except for the follderah that I have been posting trying to keep the site active.

Thank you Packrat for donating your time and money for this worthy cause. I really appreciate your efforts.

Coy,
Thank you, but my efforts are not entirely for unselfish reasons. First of all, I love restoring the older weapons, repirs, metal and woodwork. Second, it gives me something to do with lots of excess time without having to leave the house, as you may be aware, my wife is an invalid. Thirdly, it gives me personal contact with others of a similar mind set who come over to the house to work on the weapons and Forth, it's for a good cause.

However, I will advise you that I am currently trying to determine how to avoid the organizations all together since we have recently found out that less than 50% of all donations to the Wounded Warriors Program reach the veterans themselves. The rest goes to donation solicitation, personnel and overhead costs. We would much rather apply 100% of the funds directly to the veteran if possible. We are working with the Arizona Veterans outreach to see how this can be accomplished, plus we do not necessarily want to only apply needed funds to veterans in Arizona only.

The one problem that had to be overcome was that when first received, some the weapons were desired to be acquired by some of the volunteers, which we resolved by having 3 other volunteers research the current value, base on current condition and then pooling the average result and dividing by 3. The volunteer could then acquire the weapon, before restoration, at a fair market value if so desired. Most of them did acquire the weapons and the appearance of favoritism was avoided and it was deemed to be a fair way of setting the price.

Anyway thanks, but don't give me to much credit as I am usually the first one to see the donations and therefore get to take my pick of which ones to acquire if I choose to do so, before anyone else see's them.....LOL.

Just so I can post a Picture, which we are sadly lacking on this forum, here is a Wards, Western Field 20 Ga (Actually a Mossberg 85) we restored and sold. Was so dirty, the bolt couldn't be worked when we got it and it had a broken bolt spring, needed re-bluing and the stock was totaled and had to be refinished.

i'll share this with anyone thinking about hooking up with coy for a hunt. i had the experience of a lifetime just riding with him when he spotted a few hogs molesting his haybales. he said normally he would just sneak up and kill all of them... like it was his job. since i was along he said we would go ahead and have some fun. by that he meant chase them down in his truck. i was expecting to go airborne upon impact but suddenly he swerved and pulled up along side and told me to hold the wheel. then he commenced to pistol whipping two right out the window.

it didn't take long for the others to head for the hills. then coy pulled out an assault weapon from under the seat and made short work of a coyote, who thought he was watching from a safe distance. i don't think there is a safe distance from coy. (note to self: NEVER date coy's daughter)

About time we got some pictures of Hogs on this site!...Good job Coy and glad to see that even old Wiley Coyote can't get away. Is that Pistol you're using a .45?

Was starting to think that we'd have to re-name the site the "catch-all" site

djones: What would Coy's daughter want with a broken down old man? Besides, if your intentions were Honorable, why would you have to worry? And if the grand kids are any indication, I'll bet the Daughter knows how to shoot! Also, as Coy's daughter, I'll bet she can kill her own snakes, so to speak....:D

Anyway good to see some hogs in the prone position and the yote is a bonus!

Coy, do you have to look so serious in the pictures...Where's the smile?

Packrat

BTW, djones, glad to see a coherent post from you...About time you layed off the whatever you've been using and good to see that you still remember how to post!
