I cant imagine there will be a better option than the 7mm ss in a true short action cartridge. It almost seems like the perfect cartridge.
A saum case(73gr)has 3-4gr more than the short prc case, but 21gr less than the long prc case(95gr). I believe the 7 Sherman short has same capacity as the saum parent.Hi Gents,
So where does the 7SAUM fall in this conversation?
But both PRC's are magnum bolt face, just one short and one long. So if you made a LA standard bolt long range 7, it would be the 280 AIAs I understand it, the .300 PRC was designed to be the best possible long-range cartridge that would fit in a Magnum length action. The 6.5 PRC was designed to be the best possible long-range cartridge that would fit in a short length action. So the criterion for a 7mm PRC should be to be the best possible long-range cartridge that will fit in a standard length action.

Why would you want to limit a long range case by a shorter mag box in a long action? If it's already in a long action, why go any less than 3.6"?George King is referring to the action LENGTH, not the bolt face. I hadn't thought of it this way before but it does make sense.
Short is 308 or ~2.8" originally the 6.5 PRC is in the stretched/binderless mags SAAMI spec at 2.955" COAL
Long is 30-06 or ~3.34" originally proposed 7mm PRC length
Magnum is 375 H&H or 3.6" originally 300 PRC is SAAMI at 3.700" COAL

We've stretched these boxes and added mid, super short, etc. both of the PRC are better with longer boxes to stretch their legs a bit but will work in the respective lengths.

I gotcha, so would there be any reason to make a modern long range cartridge at a 3.34" saami max? Those longer boxes are a modern thing. Traditionally it was the lengths I listed above.
