6 PRC

Here's the starting point, where I hopefully will be back to with speed up, if decent accuracy. Didn't like this too well, at least not now.

I'd like to have a better 1000yd report, but not so. First target I put all five on the paper, but nothing good beyond that. Second five were at 15.514" - the scope turret pics tell the story (15moa per turn on elev.). Just glad to get them on paper with both relays - just what I wanted from a "windy" day gun. I think a better shooter could have given it a better showing. More testing and load work to do as I think this is going to be a shooter.

Hey @Huntnful & @wasskeet

I am looking to build a new hunting rifle capable of long range on Sheep, deer and antelope. I'm trying to decide between a 6mm Creedmoor and a 6 PRC. I plan to run a 20" barrel with suppressor. I noticed you've run a 6 PRC a decent amount. Couple of questions:
How's the recoil on it compared to say a 6.5 Creedmoor?
Any regret having to hand load, vs ability to buy Hornady ELD m ammo for 6 Creedmoor?
Is the extra horsepower to run above 3000 fps with heavy bullets from a short barrel worth the trade offs in your opinion?
Any other things I should consider?
Appreciate any insights you're able to share, thanks!

Well if you're already hand loading, I don't think there are many trade offs honestly. Other than less barrel life. Recoil is less than 6.5 creedmoor. At least it feels like it.

But a 108 ELDM coming out of a 6 creedmoor will kill a pretty good distance also!

I thought it was a super simple wildcat for an extra couple hundred feet per second. And I was shooting really small groups on virgin brass before even putting a firing on it.

Having a 6.5 & 25 Creedmoors, I wanted something different and I also had 6.5 PRC components on hand. Also, this was far easier than the 6 UM which has more speed (6 SAUM improved) -with no fire forming. I don't have the experience Huntnful has yet, but I think it's going to be a good cartridge.

But if what you're wanting is the ultimate 6mm out of a short barrel - it's time to call Unknown Munitions.

Latest 6 PRC results at 200 yds. All I had to work with today. Working with once fired Lapua brass now. The one 55.5gr H1000 target, I feel like I yanked one bit. Speeds on each were as follows:

55.0gr = 3241, 3258, 3253, 3251, 3266
55.5gr = 3272, 3291, 3306, 3280, 3302

Not good es/sd, but not terrible. Tried Retumbo starting at 54gr - it did not like at all. May drop back to 54gr H1000 and see if groups tighten up.

Great, have you considered using N570?

When I brake a bad shot, and the bullet lands where the crosshairs were in it broke, I definitely don't write it off. That looks really promising. Especially when 55 didn't have any "fliers" either. More than likely, it could have been you if it truly felt like a bad shot.

Retumbo has had the worst ES and worst groups in all of my cartridges and rifles. I finally just sold it all. H1000 or N570 for me now.
