You don't need anything more than a 7-08 out to 600yd. A 308 would do just fine at that range as well, for hunting or target shooting. 6.5cm won't give you much advantage over 7-08 with a 168gr vld at that range, if any. Using a 308 will make you better shooter as well. I would even recommend 223 with a 75-77gr bthp for 600yd target shooting.


If you don't reload then 308 is what you should use; there will be more match ammo options than 7-08.

Hi everyone,
Im looking to have a new built on a rem 700 short action that I got.
Rifle will ne use for 600yrds range target.

Have a 284win, 7mm rem mag, 7mmm08, 2 308, one will give is action.

As you see im a 7mm fan and with the rem mag im well equiped for long range hunting.

I do think solding one 308 and go full custom but I like to use what I got at home.

Im looking at the 6mm dasher but im open to any idea.

I dont mind single feeding my rifle.

I was really surprised with how mind numbingly, boringly accurate my buddy's 25 Creedmoor was with the 131gr blackjack. I don't know the specifics of the load, but I was consistently shooting under .375 - which I was pretty proud of, but he was saying it's quarter minute capable (nice way of telling me to practice).

It's been said but just to reiterate pure target…you cannot beat the ease to load and efficiency of a 6br or it's improved variants. I lean toward the brx and dasher but get some don't want to deal with forming. Although, I've shot matches fireforming and it's still competitive.

I would take a look at what the top F class shooters use at 600. Last time I was at nationals there was not a single Creedmore on the line, does that say something? The 6 Dasher and 6 XC are real popular. My thoughts have always been, I don't care how fast your bullet goes, rather can you consistently hit your target? 600 yard F class targets have a 6" 10 ring. If your gun isn't 1/4 moa or better putting 60 rounds in that will be tough. At my range it's not uncommon to have to clean all three matches to win. Often it comes down to X count.

By the way my range is in Rawlins, WY. Can you say wind?

For 6.5 caliber short action, it's hard to beat the 6.5x47 Lapua, I have one, and I've had a 260, and love that round also. I'd go with either one of those before the Creedmoor, I have a Creedmoor and like it, it's accurate, but the Lapua is every bit as accurate with less powder, and the 260 is every bit as accurate and has more case capacity.

Short action 7mm, the 284 or 7mm-08 would be solid choices I would think. The 7wsm is nice, but you'd need a magnum bolt face.

For 6mm, I've heard very good things about the 6mmx47 Lapua also. Personally, I have a 243, and if I ever get that rebarreled, it'll be a 243 again for sentimental reasons, but it will have a tighter twist barrel for the heavier bullets we have today. I'm old fashioned I guess, but for 6mm, I love that round.

I really like the 6mm Remington. I get 3200 FPS with 105 Amax with 48.3 RL26.

I have a 6 Creedmoor and if I was to do it again I would go with the 243 and 7.5 twist with a long throat

I second just getting a 223. From shooting a 16" AR at that distance I don't see how a bolt gun with better billets wouldn't be a cake walk

I seem to have several of the rifles suggested. Really like the 260. The suggestion that surprised me the most was the 250AI. Personally, I love it but across the board it doesn't seem to get a lot of notoriety and I don't know why. For 600 yards or less and with the right twist barrel, it's a hiney to shoot and can be extremely accurate.

Great choice but those bullets are non existent at the moment. Had them on backorder for a long while with no update on when they will return.

After owning a bunch of calibers, the br variants are just fun. 0 recoil, insanely efficient, crazy easy to tune and accuracy that's almost unrivalled! My vote is a 6br, 6bra or 6 dasher

Some friend of mine told me the 308 is good To leaen reading the wind and that true. Having à 7mm08 custom could be fun. Use to have à 223 but sold it... now regret it
