I can't help with a what caliber will work best for you. I hunt Prairie Dogs out to 500 yds, so I am pretty short on the range portion.
I would suggest you do some research and look into a Savage rifle.
They are well known for being very accurate out of the box and not super pricey. Changing barrels is fairly straight forward if you want to go that route.
I have a 22-250 and with my handloads I can get .2"-.3" (I really avg. .6")groups at 200 yds. My rifle is all stock. I truly believe if properly broken in, like mine is, the gun will out shoot you.
I am just very impressed with Savage.
