What gun would you want if the SHTF?

EASY!!! LOL!!!

For me, AR15 in 6.5 Grendel, ballistics of the .308, almost as light a carry out as .223.

If I get two, the second will be a bolt action 7mm WSM, because it will reach out and touch to well past 1000 yards.

If I get 3, I would add a .338 Lapua or .50 BMG semi-auto, for longer range zombies.gun)

If I get four, I would add a howitzer or maybe a mortar. Probably the mortar because it is man portable.

For close in, I would zap the first bad guy carrying a heavy load of .223 or similar, and take his!

A .40 or .45 for going to the bathroom duties!!:D

These firearms are nice, but it suprises me that there is not more mention of a .22 rifle, or several. In a SHTF situation, practicality is everything. This isnt to say a good battle rifle and defensive pistol arent necessary. BUT.... .22 suppressed or unsuppressed is a quiet rifle. I dont want to attract attention, and a big boom stick is going to flag me as having goodies and a fresh kill. Ammo is small and easy to carry. .22 is also a hell of a meat getter. Nothing within 100 yds is safe, even beyond if you do your homework, but headshots are critical on anything larger than a dog. I have shot plenty of hogs in the head, with a hog on the ground instantly afterward, it is undeniably a meat getter. The rifles are light. The ammo is cheap, which makes it very easy to stock up on. The .22 should not be overlooked.

M1A, skip the auto-no need to spray and play just semi-one shot one kill, scope or peep don't matter.

I think there is alot of truth in what bpatterson said. That and a good Knife, those don't require ammo to work. A large bore air rifle might just be the cat's meow, wouldn't work in a defensive situation, but the one I've built could kill a deer no problem, and all I have to do is pump it up with air (lots of that around), I get 3-4 good shots on a fill, hell you could shoot rocks out of it if you ran out of lead. If the s--t is hitting the fan you can better belive I'll be staying away from large populations and not attracting attention to myself.

I'll have to stick with what I own at first and pray that some of you guys are near my part of TN with the backup.

270win A bolt
Mini 14 with some 20rd clips
CZ P01 9mm
870 12gauge
Savage MarkII 22lr

That should have me covered for almost anything near and far plus the 22 for getting a quick snack here and there.

My most important weapon though. I big effing machete. Because if it really gets that bad, I'll run out of bullets before it ends. A huge knife on the other hand will do work for years. My side out town would look like a scene from 300. lol

If I could have one gun for self/family preservation, it would be a varmint type AR chambered in .308. You should be able to kill any 2 or 4 legged creatures that come your way. If I had my way I'd like 4 guns. Accuracy International .338 Lapua, M16, Rem. 870 HD 12ga., and a Kimber Tactical Entry 1911. I think those four should cover 99.9% of your problems.

For day to day Id want a bolt action silenced 22 win mag and my 45 lc sidearm. For hectic days I'd take a 308 with ballistic tips, I like the splat factor. The wife really likes the rem 870 so she'll keep that it has 4 barrels short to long bird and cantilever slug.

DPMS 300 RSAUM with a 7.62 upper.

and if the SHTF then do like these guys did and fight back hard!!!

Was having a BS session today tearing down our elk camp about what gun we would want if the s*#% hit the fan. We figured a gun that could shoot to 800 yards reliably would be the ticket and it would have to have a decent magazine system.

I was thinking I'd go buy a Remington 700 Police in 308 and have a detachable mag system installed with a few 10 rd mags then stick a 4.5-14x50 Mark 4 on it...mostly because that would about drain my savings right now. :D

How about everyone else?

I hope this hasn't been posted before.

I would have to vote for the M1a. It is a very capable rifle and still one of the best
battle rifles ever made.

It is very capable at 1000 yards and is very dependable (And the 20 round magazines
can't hurt) when things go really bad.

And a double action handgun in 45 ACP in a would be my close in go to pistol for a side arm.

J E Custom, +1 on the M1a, I posted the same choice earlier. I was issued one many years ago when I was in the Marines and loved it so much so that a few years ago I bought a brand new one right out of the Springfield Armory walnut stock etc just like the one I had, Man is it sweet...it loves the Lake City ammo...got a deal on 400 rounds. Never a slam fire or misfire. Loved using the peep sights again and very accurate.

I'd consider:
1) Ammo availability. A wildcat/rare cartridge gun is useless once you use up whatever small stock you can carry.
2) Sight setup. Most modern bolt actions are useless if your scope gets broken and I would expect this gun to see some abuse
3) Portability. Most of the heavy hunting rifles we talk about here would be useless, you'd have other things to carry as well.
4) Likely engagement scenarios. I'd be focused on protecting and feeding my family. If the enemy is 1000yds away, I'm more likely to evade than engage.

I'd opt for a rugged semi-auto in a popular cartridge. Out of my current stock that's my Garand, with my Glock as backup. In a pinch I could engage targets past a quarter mile with a Garand, they'd need to keep their head down anyways. I'd want a shotgun available too if food was a priority.

I'm just not an AR fan. Among the dozen or so shooting buddies own, despite good maintenance/cleaning several wouldn't feed right from the factory and probably 80% of them have had serious feed issues. My Garand has never failed to feed.

ATH, Your buddies having problems shooting semi-auto could be ammo-whose the ammo manufacturer. Also type/quality of magazines could contribute. Are the magazines being cleaned and slightly lubed-SLIGHTLY.
