Update. Depending on MV and altitude a 180 ELDM with MV 2875 fps could open up at 1000 yards.

I wouldn't think that a 308 would push a 195gr @ 3000fps. Maybe @ 2450fps and that a lot.
The other is, I guess the aoudad would just stand around let you shoot. I don't think so.

Woah! That's surprising to me. Do you have experience with the rdf and those new gen pointed smk bullets on game to relay? The lack of any discernible meplat or visible hollow point or plastic tip to initiate expansion/allow for a much bigger hollow point below it makes me too nervous to even have thought about using them for hunting. But I'd love to find out my fears are misplaced.
By that same token I love the 225 eld m out of the 300 win for all those reasons…it blows up violently with enough initial sectional density and overall mass to still get where it needs to go.

That's a great question.....
I would think that something with a polymer tip?? Something to help aid in expansion. SP are not the best BC bullet and are not very uniform but they open very well-almost too well. JMO

Just a hunch, but I am guessing that it was not a .308 Win pushing the .308" diameter 195 at 3000fps. I believe it was a statement of the caliber, not the cartridge.
It wasn't clear IF recommendation was for HUNTING. I did see "elk", but not stated for elk. So my 1st post was pessimistic then?

Fair enough, but the OP did specify that he was after expansion at 1000 yards. Whether that's "hunting" or not…I'm just genuinely curious if the rdf or the newer ultra sleek SMK expands, both at high velocity and at 1000 yard velocity. That's all.
I've read on this forum that some claim to use target/match bullets on animals. The only deer I've shot was in '76 or '77. Other than that it's been a varmint hodgepodge

For sure. The tipped ones are especially violent even at low velocity which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how they're used. The otm/bthp types are a little more uncertain. The big worry is that they may not upset or fragment at all and just punch a small hole like an fmj. But I know there's little if any difference between a Berger "hunting" vld and a bthp match bullet in general. Some folks go to extra trouble to clean out the hollow point tips, some artificially make them a little Wider at the meplat, opening the tips up just a smidge to ensure they'll upset on impact, I've read some guys even drill them a bit. All this to ensure they don't pencil through. The rdf and the newer ultra high bc smks are "pointed" bullets where the projectile's nose is ran through an additional pointing die to close off that tiny little match type hollow point even more and make the bullet pointier for higher bc. Im curious if there's a difference between one of these "pointed" bthp match bullets and a conventional bthp match bullet like even in a gel test or something.
I presently don't plan to use either for hunting, I think there are better choices, but im just a curious guy haha.
As for hunting, quail is my animal to eat. Now to get the shot to dissolve so I don't have to pick it out! Bobs or blues, I'm not picky as both taste very good grilled!

Never had quail. Have had quail eggs. Cute little things. My dad bought some on a whim once just to see people's reaction at church when he told them he had toast, bacon, coffee, orange juice, AND A DOZEN EGGS for breakfast that morning!

He used a 300 Win mag. It does use .308 caliber bullets, though. You are correct. A 308Win cartridge will not push a 195 gr bullet 3000 fps, but I have been testing a 308 Moses wildcat that uses the 308 Win case to enhance powder capacity by 11% or so and from a 22" 1:8 barrel intended to stabilize our 205 gr SBD2 bullet, I'm able to safely push the 195 gr bullet 2650 fps using 55.5 gr of StaBall6.5 though.

He has done that with Deer and the 407gr Berger. But for head shots, that bullet is only good for hitting steel. Pencils right through otherwise. His wife, however, has hit at 3 miles with our 390 gr 375SBD2 bullet under his coaching and the 375 Enabelr at 900 foot elevation.

Even the 162 eldm shows 1900fps at 1000y and 1350 ft lbs when I punch numbers in for 8000' msl out of a 7rm.
I'd choose a cup/core bullet for 1000y for the lower expansion and higher bc than a mono
