What bullets for 1000 yards

If you have the twist to run it the 180 hunter vld or hybrid is really the sweet spot imo.

Some will say the 195 due to its increased bc but it comes at a velocity loss where the increased bc may not make a difference inside of 1k.

I assume you're talking about a 7 rem mag. If so I did some simple balastics and at sea level you'll fall below 1800 fps around 900 yards with 168 and 180 bergers. If this is elk medicine and estimating 8000 asl, you'll get to 1000 yards easily with 168 or 180 bergers.

Others will do it as well but imo these are two of the most slippery bullets when it comes to retained velocity and wind drift down range.

Most bullet manufacturers claim reliable expansion down to 1800 fps. I use 2k as a margin of additional reliability.

I was going to use my Strelok Pro to throw some numbers for different bullets into the mix.
But Strelok is on the new sanctions list and mine won't download any info for bullets.

Thanks Brandon!!!!
I've switched over to the Hornady for now. I'm liking it so far.

What bullets are best for lower speed expansion for 1000 yard shots?
We have customers doing DRT kills on Moose and Elk from 950- 1500 yards with Badlands Precision BD2 bullets designed to open at 1700 fps. We also made a custom 50BMG Bulldozer bullet for a customer who killed an Elk in New Mexico at 1694 yds.

Accubond lr and cutting edge lazers both open down to 1200
Bonded or mono those would be my choice for anything passed 1k
Hammers and badlands are great too but not down to 1200 fps
Have you actually hunted with the Lazers down to 1200 fps? I know thats what they advertise. A good friend of mine actually shot an Aoudad at 950 yds with a 400 gr .375 lazer using a 375 Enabelr 6 times through the shoulder and had to finish off the animal with his pistol. The Lazer impacted well above 1200 fps. By contrast we have posted customers killing Elk with .375 SBD2s out to 1500 yds.

Peeps will always push the envelope. It never hurt to have a buffer in place. "My" unwritten rule for elk size game is 1500 FT-LBS and 1800 FPS at POI—1000 FT-LBS on the deer-size game. And yes, I have harvested them below this threshold.

Here are some photos of a post a customer of ours posted on FB. Elk taken at 1225 yds with 308 BD2 195 gr (G7= 0.345). MV 3000, altitude 8900 ft. One shot DRT. Estimated impact velocity 1880 fps. approximately. BC absolutely crucial for long range shots like these.

Nice of the critter to let him shoot him six times in a row in the same spot. That's crazy good shooting too, to punch an aoudad shoulder 6 consecutive times at 950 yards. Dang!!!! If he's this kind of sniper why not just shoot it in the head with an fmj?

Been a few months since February, but if it's gotta be 1,000 yd and to not limit yourself in the event of high velocity close range impacts, the 7mm / 147 Afterburner might be worth a try. If you got the twist, it'll get you around .310 G7...
