What’s your five? 5 Calibers to do it all...

Do you mean cartridges or calibers?

I believe your question is answered in the first post

I will bite!
6 creed yotes and varmint
6.5 creed banging steel shooting yotes and antelope.
28 Nosler most game in North America
338 of some flavor edge, Sherman mag or RUM
375 Ruger for the big animals.

If we are talking center fire rifles only:

1) 5.56x54/.223 Rem. 20" M4 profile. For varmints and plinking
2) .25-06 Rem. 26" light varmint w/ a 1-8" twist. For varmints and range time.
3) .280 AI. 24" magnum sporter w/ a 1-8" twist, throated long. For open country on medium to large game.
4) .30-06 Springfield. 22" STD sporter w/ 1-10" twist. For dense timber and thick brush plus ammo is common.
5) .338 RUM. 26" Light Varmint w/ 1-10" twist. For 1,000+, open country and large/dangerous game.

If I am ever reduced to only having 5 rifles in my possession I don't think I'll be able to afford an African safari so this would be my list for NA game animals.

We are talking really about your 5 do everything center fire cartridges. We gave everyone a 22LR and 12ga. shotgun. I just used cartridge and caliber interchangeable for clarification because some people refer to a rifles chambering as its caliber when it is the cartridge that it is cambered in and the bore diameter is the caliber. A 6.5x284 Norma is a 6.5 caliber bullet with a .260 bore diameter chamber in a 6.5x284 Norma cartridge. So truthfully what are your five do everything cartridges?

Hey guys,

I've been watching our threads for a while now and curiosity has got the best of me. With so many great choices out there for LRH which cartridges and calibers really set themselves apart from the rest, if any? Which ones make almost everyone's must have list? The reality is most people can't afford a half dozen rifles or more, so if you had the opportunity to hunt the world for everything from groundhogs to elephants and were limited to 5 cartridges or less what would they be? Just curious which ones consistently rise to the top and if any of the new Gucci cartridges make the cut or we wind up sticking with the tried and true. Feel free to state your reason or uses for each cartridge. I am not looking for a debate. There are no wrong answers. Everyone has there favorites. Just curious if there is any consistency? I think it could help some of the new guys narrow there choices when selecting their next cartridge....

I'll start! 308, 270 win, 300 WIn Mag, 338 RUM, 375 H&H. What are your thoughts???
22RF (small game, plinking, zombies)
243 (ultra boring, but it has good flexibility)
257 wby (It just makes me smile)
300 wby (others are faster now, but it does all you need until..)
375 H&H (the grand daddy of the magnum cartridges, respected by PHs, big enough for authority, usable on deer and a pure and simple classic). Ideally in an Rigby original... in my dreams!)

Is there any way we could get a poll/graph going of everyone's choices without someone having to do it manually? I'd be fascinated to see the distribution of responses.

If we assume/exclude 22lr and 12ga, mine would be:

.223
.308
35 Rem (for a shorter range lever gun)
300 Win Mag
375H&H
I'm working on it. I will post a graph or ranking later tonight, if time allows.

Impossible to do well with 5. For "Make Do" centerfire rifles only I'll play.
22-250 Coyotes and down
7MM (STW, 7-300, 28Nosler) those are the same cartridge in different clothes. Medium Game to 1K
338 Edge Long range medium to large game
375HH Alaskan Bears and general purpose African rifle
458 Lott. Anything that is particularly big or mean.
But you are cheating life without a .17Rem, .223, .243, 257AI or Wby, a 6.5 supergun, and I will never sell my .300RUM. Out west a 35 Whelen in a light rifle would rank pretty high.
Guess you could just kill everything in North America with a big .30 or .338 Magnum. Doing it with one makes about as much sense as limiting it to 5 IMO. My wife jokes that I even have one especially for Dragonflies. Sad thing is she is right.

I live in S Africa, hunting since 1970. Ex PH in Namibia. Own 30-06 and CZ 6.5x55 and CZ452 .22lr
Had 8x68, 270, 7x57, 243, 223 and .222
My five selection for ALL game including African game :
1. 9.3 x 62 Mauser
2. 30-06
3. 6.5 x55 Swede
4. 12 # double barrel
5 .22lr

If a choice of ONLY one, then .375 H & H.

(Cannot put "12 # and .22lr aside" - the OP asked for five and these should be part of the five - otherwise, you are selecting seven!!)
Bwana Barry what makes you choose the 9.3x62 over the 375 for your big gun especially since you said if you only had one it would be a 375? My reason for asking is I have owned and presently own several 375 H&Hs. I have also owned a 458 Lott. All bolt guns. I recently passed over a Merkel double precisely because it was in 9.3x62. I have never owned one but was looking for a 375 or 416. Think I should rethink that. It was a good deal I just wasn't up on the cartridge. Enlighten me! How does the 9.3 stack up next to the 375 or 416?🤔

Our list is as follows:
*5.56/223, AR platform for all things close to mid range requiring a high rate of discouragement and/or general destruction. MULTIPLE choices for projectiles to handle about anything with a 30 round mag.
*7.62/308, AR platform for general purpose hunting 0-600 yds, and the above mentioned alternative target sets.
*30-06 Springfield, pump action 7600, nothing lighter than 180GR. Accurate, lightweight, fast reload/engagement. Handles about anything on the North American continent with right projectiles.
*338 Winchester Magnum. Spelled 'All Around Workhorse'. Literally nothing you cannot kill with proper projectile selection on any continent. Not allowed in some African countries, but certainly extremely capable of adequate penetration on any animal with proper projectiles. Ballistics/physics isn't just a good idea.
*7mm Rem Mag, long range hunting, flat trajectories, plethora of high BC's to choose from, maintains plenty of down range Smack-Down, good sectional densities and penetration at range, and plenty of projectiles that degradate well for speed goat size game.
*12GA shotgun, great for harvesting small game, foul, and great for thick woods protection at point blank to 70 yards easy with load selection. And I'll add one more...
*22LR, great for small kids and or non shooter training. Cheap, lightweight ammo, surprisingly accurate in the right combination, cost effective, relatively quiet way to put food on the table.

We have a few more in the repertoire, including one of my favorites, the 35 Whelen. The only reason I did not include it amongst the above group was because there are a couple of caliber's in there I feel quite strongly can do the same job as well as the Whelen, and availability of ammunition. But make no mistake, it is certainly interchangeable with the 30-06, and even more powerful obviously. I simply excluded because of ammunition availability in a sane environment, which we do not reside in at the moment.
