Up in Alaska they say to file the front sight and ramp down smooth on a handgun so when that grizzly puts it up your hind parts it wont hurt so bad. you would be extremely lucky to stop a grizzly with a handgun in a charge.
There have been a few that have stopped them with handguns here in MT and neighboring WY. it's definitely not impossible to do. There are guys that still get mauled even with a pistol, I'd rather have it in case I could stop it than not having it at all.

Lord, make me fast and accurate. Let my aim be true and my hand faster than those who would seek to destroy me. Grant me victory over my foes and those that wish to do harm to me and mine. Let not my last thought be "If only I had my gun"; and Lord, if today is truly the day that you will call me home, let me die in a pile of empty brass.

My brother in law was K-9 County Sheriff many years ago and had a shepherd. When in back seat of cruiser, do NOT approach even if you roughhoused with him in backyard 15 min earlier! They have an internal switch that just changes their behavior from wagging tail to rip your throat out in a second. When time to retire, he was able to keep at home. Now Buried in backyard with nice marker. He was a difference maker breaking up disturbances especially domestic. The look he gives shuts down even the worse people. We need more out there.!

If I was in grizz country a lot, I would definitely have a dog companion as early warning radar plus one heck of a diversion which just might give precious seconds to provide better shot placement.

Or just have a Colt M203 Grenade Launcher at ready!
Your thinking is like mine. Early warning and distraction. I'm pretty dang sure he wouldn't attack first .

Muddy .
I just notice I never sent this from days ago ... 🙄 Oh well. Better late than never. Maybe.

A semi auto 10mm just has to be a part of everyone's protection no matter what, because even if your big bore rifle or handgun didn't do their job during the initial attack, then you can still empty the 15 round mag into the bear with a one handed grip while it's trying to claw and bite you body parts.... you surely couldn't miss at that close range. You can do a lot of shooting during those seconds of remaining life. If those 15 rounds didn't stop it... then you could simply say... Yes, Lord, I did my best... here I come.

I agree . Hopefully you had a round in the chamber also.16. And you don't hit mag release or take it out of battery if you shove it against the bear. Hopefully the bear doesn't crush your skull or throat with mouth or paw swipe before you can use pistol. I'm with you though . It's what I carry. Last defense .I'll take my chances with a semi auto. Photos from a few attacks here over the years , the people's face's/head's were tore up. I haven't seen any from recent attacks. I'm pretty sure they don't want face's or bodie's to be seen or partially eaten. From relatives which I understand and it might scare away hikers/turrist's.... Maybe?
Not sure .

I believe a victim to be is suppose to hit the dirt, face down so that the bear does not tear up your body's frontal parts... especially your face and throat... so... while it is working over your top side... you can be holding the semi in one hand behind your head, while emptying the clip into it's throat-face area.... which should turn it into an instant bear rug upon your back.... kinda like in the movie... The Revenant. If he had pulled out a semi the moment he saw those cubs... the ending would have been way way different. Just watch that scene again with a semi in his hands.
