My thoughts on solid copper bullets and in comparison to other bullet types.

Very inefficient. Some of us get a thrill from raw horse power.

And preference. Some folks drive smart cars that get 52 mpg, some drive hot rods that measure in GPM. No wrong answers, they all have a purpose.
I agree. It's definitely personal preference, and if I didn't say that, that's what I was trying to say lol.

You are correct but did you take this in to consideration, I have a hold on hair to 500 yard rig. And my 308 is much the same as yours and if I'm hunting over 800 yards that's what I will take and my load is a cup and core bullet at the moment
I get that, yes. I definitely pick my gun out of the safe based on the hunt I'm setting out on. I have many guns and many different loads and all for a different type of hunt and purpose. 👍🏻

So with that being said the area ( corn and beanfields with fence rows) that I hunt I have to take the shot that is presented to me the instant that I see the deer as they are moving and can be out of sight in an instant, That's why I have made the jump to Hammers, I can basically shoot for the far leg no matter how it's positioned and per our testing I know the bullet is going to have more than adequate pentation with petals in tow plus I have a 500 yard laser beam and please don't think I'm being a jerk but IMO that's efficient

I'm not sure how you can "hold on hair" at 500 yds when the drop is 3.7 moa or 18.5" or 1 mil which is half a meter at if you are using meters? What do you mean by "hold on hair?"

I used to use the 178gr AMAX in my 308 a lot for deer. It worked very well. I ended up trying the 208gr ELDM in it to boost my range but was having issues getting groups as small as I prefer between magazine restrictions and jump. So I tried the new (at the time) 195gr TMK and had a load shooting 1/2" groups in less than 25 shots. It's been an absolutely amazing bullet too. Slightly thicker jackets than an ELDM but a slightly wider tip. It's turned out to be an excellent balance there for terminal performance.

How do you prefer to place the 195 TMKs on deer size game, through the shoulder or behind?

How far would you feel comfortable on an elk in the crease with your 308 and 195 TMKs?

Currently searching for 195 TMKs to test on my 28 inch 30-06

Again, I get what you're saying, but what I meant by efficient isn't what you're referring to. I'm talking about the cartridge and bullet in general, without necessarily talking about hunting. I'm talking about bullets being efficient by retaining their velocity very well and not needing a lot of starting velocity to get a long ways before hitting subsonic. Short action cartridges that are capable of shooting to mile with ease. That's efficient.

A 6.5 SST with a 153.5gr Berger at 3043fps is supersonic still past a mile, for example. That's what I'm meaning. And bringing hunting back into it, with good shot placement, it's still good on game to 1500 yards.

You're view on efficiency is in regards to hold/adjustment. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just clarifying what I meant is all. Your 4200+fps load is obviously going to have a lot of speed to start, but is losing it very fast. It's at a much faster rate than the 153.5gr bullet at like 1200fps slower MV starting out. The 153.5gr at 4200fps MV would still be almost 3500fps at 500 yards with less than a mil hold required. Obviously you're not going get that MV from a 6.5 SST though. It's just an example.

This is going off on a bit of a tangent here though, pun intended lol.

It depends on what impact velocity would be. If you'd be impacting around 2400-2600fps or higher, I would avoid direct shoulder shots and aim behind. If you'll be under that, you can put it right in the shoulder. I'd treat elk the same since that bullet has a sectional density of .294 and is plenty good for elk.

I wondered this too, then thought he meant he uses the reticle, then I thought most rifles are hold on hair at 500 if we r using reticles lol.

Right, 1.1mils would still be 20" of bullet drop at 500 yards with that load. I assumed he meant holding just over a mil on the crosshair for a 500 yard shot. You'd still have to get your wind hold right though since a 15mph left to right wind would be 22" at 500 yards. So you'd need to be holding for both or you miss.
