I don't think I would call bullet selection close to equal for .270 and .284...

If I were to guess which way you mean, I'd guess more selection for .270? If so, I'd agree. I meant roughly equal in selection, purely from seeing more offerings across the table. I love it all in this class of .277 - .284.

No, I'd say 7mm has a much broader selection of weights available. Every bullet may be available in 270 but they are just about all between 130 and 150.

So true, in terms of the adding the heavier 7mm bullets.

That 7STW and 7RM or similar, would only have the equivalent, and near equivalent at that, energy-wise in a 270 Weatherby or the 270WSM. That velocity variable...

The way I look at it as soon as you have to start correcting for elevation to hit an animal all cartridges are equal. Until you run out of enough energy for the task at hand it's not a big deal to turn your elevation turret 1 or 10 MOA. The only thing I am not taking into factor is windage which granted a higher BC will drift less.
When talking about max point blank range the difference between standard cartridges and magnums is usually less than 50 yards.

300 win mag is a good choice, 6.5 a bit light in my opinion fir elk.

264 win mag and 6.5 x284 we've taken plenty of elk with 140 grn. But our favorite for elk 338 lapua hands down on the flats
A tamed 300 win mag also great but all around 7mm stw or 264 win mag.

I have never been a huge fan of the 30 cals. I hand load for all my rifles and many of my friends rifles. I have yet to see an application where a .284 at my speeds would not be "acceptable" but a .308 at 300win speeds would be "acceptable". In my mind if a .284 won't get the job done, then a 30 cal isn't the answer. You need a big 338. Maybe a 300 RUM or some wildcat not heard of. Needless to say my 300 wby will be getting a new tube sooner than later.

Choosing a caliber for an all around hunting rifle can be daunting for a new or even experienced hunter. After owning several .30 caliber magnums and not liking the weight of these guns, I finally settled on the .270 wsm. My daughter and I both have them and I have found that this caliber has all the qualities i could want in a deer and elk killer. My kid loves hers

My favorite walk around mountain rifle is a Tikka t3 270 rechambered to 270 weatherby mag. with bolt modified to fit magnum specs. I shoot a 145gr eld-x Hornady and a KDF muzzle break. Or just get a Tikka t3x in 270wsm and have a KDF break installed. Wear ear protection!

I used to think this way and explained on an earlier post how a good recoil pad changed the way I think about 30 cals, bigger than that, or magnums. Separately, and I think someone can speak to the reason as to why, but a bigger bullet behaves differently downrange. It just does. Mind you, I love them all from .25 to .338 as long range fun.

There have been a lot of opinions case in this thread so why not one more.

1 do all caliber that can take 100% of N American big game, that can easily be found in nearly every store that carries ammo, that has more options for reloaders than just about any other caliber, and that can push nearly any projectile that is available...the time tested 300 Win Mag.

Now, if you want to move into the 21st century and move up in velocity and what could be the next 300 WM...it may be the 300 PRC. The military is going to phase out the 300WM in the coming years and spec ops will rebarrel with the 300 PRC. That wont change what has been the go to standard of the 300WM and all the data I shared above although it may change what is to come.

Easy answer 300 WM. Gamblers answer 300 PRC or even the 30 nosler...your call

I love both .277 in 270win and 30 cal 300win mag....tough choice and my personal 2 favorite...that being said, I don't believe I've ever felt the recoil from a shot I took while hunting... so gotta favor the 300 win ....I took a heavy buck at 500 yds with 200gr Hornady eldx .... dropped like a sack of potatoes...my 300 is very tame Being suppressed and in xlr chassis with glshock stock...loved the drt result on deer... mabe a touch overkill but the grass is 12ft tall and I didn't want to have to track...300wm power is sweet

I have a Winchester M70 in 300 WSM. Not bad recoil for a magnum. Very accurate as well. But lately, I find myself shooting my soft shooting 6.5 CM most of the time. Guess I'm getting spoiled to it.
