In the Ear? Really???

I am looking into going on another hog hunt this next January. I have been on a few with less than desirable results to say the least. I NEED RECOMMENDATIONS! I have hunted the famous Creek Ranch in Florida with a "PROFESSIONAL" guide and outfitter by the name of Jim Arnold. It was a next to worthless hunt.

Now I have heavy skepticism on any of the hunts I look at. All advertise good hunts and then the ratings are 0 or horrible. Case in example is MY RANCH ( name of the ranch)in Texas.

Hog Haven is touted as being good at one time but my fears are now it is over hunted like so many of the others.

So here is what I am looking for. 1; unlimited hogs, 2;pick up and delivery from the airport with lodging. 3; no high fences. 4; A 4 to 5 day hunt that is reasonable with a lot of hogs. I am not into chandeliers and log cabin resort style 5 star hunting. I want hogs not a wealthy resort. I would think that $225 to $275 a day would be sufficient for a great hunt, 350 to 600 a day is ridicules in my mind.

Who do recommend? Could even take a few members here if the outfitter needed a min amount of hunters! Who should I use and where should I go?

Nice shooting. Pig shooting is great fun and they fight back if you miss, an added challenge!

Here in Australia, we have a massive feral pig problem across the eastern states.

Shoot them in the ear? Yep and the rear... If they bolt away from you, put one in the 'date' (a**hole). Its soft all the way to the vitals and will drop them stone cold dead. You might not be able to keep the meat, but we have problems with them having worms etc here, so its not worth keeping most of the time anyway.

Nice pictures. I mainly use AR-15 with Peq-2 and peq-15s with helmet mounted PVS-14. Every once in a while I get out my LWRC M-6 and Aquilla 6x and shoot them. In Alabama , with proper paper work, we main use lasers and pvs-14s for hog killing. I will post some picks of gear and hogs if I can find them lattergun)

I honestly don't usually read this thread because in Idaho, we don't have feral pigs in any great numbers that I'm aware of, however, I heard that might be changing. Apparently, some were reported in the southwest potion of the state. I would think that fish & game would get on this right away, but apparently, that wasn't the case (at least last time I checked).

Though I would love to hunt ham with fangs... I'm not really excited to have them pushing out other game here in Idaho. The wolves have already been fairly successful at that.

Idaho Elk Hunter, wish I had the money to join you for a trip south... I'd do it in a heartbeat.

finally got to take a hog with the tracking point sighting system. this rifle/scope combo is guaranteed 1 moa at 1,000 yards using their 338 lapua ammo. you place the blue crosshairs where you want to shoot and push a button on the trigger guard. the scope 'tags' the object by placing a red dot on it. you pull the trigger and the crosshairs turn red, however the gun doesn't fire until you reacquire the dot.

this shot is at 330 yards. i had a bipod but no rear rest, so it's a bit shaky, especially at 30 power. not exactly in the ear, but the second shot was pretty close.

In the ear. Really!

Well, I did my first hog "hunt", harvest is more correct in this case. Those details are not important as it is more about practice for elk and time permitting we are going to do another real hog hunt soon.

There is a video. I will post it, my email has been acting up so I have to get my buddy to resend it.

Rifle:
Hall E action, custom.
Chambering: 300RUM
Ammunition: Remington Premier Copper Solids 165gr, 3341fps.
Scope: Sightron SIII 10-50x60 LRMOA

Range: 500 yards
Conditions: 52degrees, clear, wind increasing from 3 to 6mph from 8o'clock during shot setup.
Position: prone, bipod
Come up: 4MOA
Wind Read: .5 adjusted to 1.25 by the time of trigger press.
Shot setup: quartering away at 10:30o'clock, head down, looking left.

Results: Well, I have to admit the first shot was a total miss, "5 feet to the right" was the call. I looked again at my turrets. I know that windage had been bumped during transport, I went the wrong way putting it back. Took one entire turn back left then redo in the wind clicks.

Down pig.

When we collected the little guy, it was in the ear and out the center of the forehead. When I broke down the game I found a grazed rib. Point of aim was the elbow "dimple" with intention of sending the projectile down his neck.

I turn my attention to crows for just one day and look what happens. even though I was suffering from fatigue and dehydration, something inside kept pushing me to go on; dedication? fortitude? I don't know, perhaps just a desire to go on when others would have turned back.

suspecting pigs could have been camped out in the milo all day, I climbed a tree with the quarter moon at my back. looking down into the stalks, I could see them rummaging around. after quickly catching a few rabbits by hand, I wrapped their skins around my pant legs to minimize my sound through the field. now that I could move as quietly as they could, I approached dangerously close to the alpha. even though I had to shoot through seed heads, a bullet to the chest resulted in a total smack down.

now my adrenaline was pumping as fast as theirs. with pigs scattering in all directions, I had to watch the plants for movement and pick my shot opportunities during their panicked escape. yes, some were shot in the *** using this technique. the scientific term for that is… "it is what it is".

you need to get a little closer lol

scope is an older model d740. it comes ready to attach to a picatinny. i had a QR ARMS mount that broke. wasn't suited for that scope.

eyepiece is in the way for easy charging handle access when mounted straight to the rail, so i've tried various QR mounts. Larue makes one that works well. i'm currently using one that now comes with the current production d740s.

Djones,

Thanks, Kind of helped my make up my mind. Have been trying to research NV Scopes but the local "Authorities" were confusing me. IR, thermal imaging, Digital, etc.
All I wanted was a couple of Night vision Scopes for a 12' elevated static blind, with a maximum range of less than 150 yards, overlooking the only pond in about 1500 acres of mostly brush and small hills. BUT something that could be used out in the open if the opportunity presented itself.

I had looked up the following scope and liked what I read, but it didn't click that that was what you were using until I went and searched D-740 and it took me to the to the Night Optics site again tonight. Night Optics D-760 Night Vision Scope, Gen 2+HP. I shouldn't have the charging handle problem, will be shooting Springfield M1A NM or maybe Rem 700 VTR after I get it broke in and zero'd.

As far as the hog being a little close, can't get the site to let me push him out farther. Download the sharpshooter, then space clear across the page for the hog and you can see what I get. darn hogs almost in my lap!

Got it down now, - In the ear, but at this range, think I may just fix bayonet and go after him on foot

Thanks again!

Bruce

i could hear hogs fighting in their distant bedding area, so i scattered peanuts in a place i've baited often. you never know which direction they will go after dark; toward food, water or perhaps just away from farming activity they heard earlier. hoping for a daylight shot, i tried a few short fighting calls with the foxpro. in just a few moments i could see their shapes moving hurriedly through the grass. with a strong wind in my face, i grabbed the blackout and rushed to get within range before light ran out. they raced right past the feed, presumably looking for the fight. slowly i continued forward until they came back to peanuts, all but one. i suspect he was the biggest since i could easily see him standing well above the grass, but he was too far.

twilight was quickly approaching, so i picked out the biggest of the peanut gorgers just 60 yards away. darkness accelerated as i impatiently waited for the other hogs to get out of the way and offer a clear shot. time was out, i had to take what was offered. the acog was really too dark to place it accurately, but i could tell where his head was. one shot and they disappeared into the brush. i couldn't see the ground over the weeds, so i walked up expecting a tracking job, but there he was thrashing around with a hole in his ear from a sierra 125gr otm.

I don't know where you are hunting, but the hogs you are showing are considerably larger than what we've been seeing down in SW Texas. The tusks on the one you have presently showing are much larger than the biggest one we've seen that one of the boys got last year when I didn't go. I can't figure out how yours are getting so big with the sticks or rebar propping their mouths open like that. Local affliction?

Feral Hog.jpg

What are you doing with the meat? Once they get about half grown, we don't even try to eat them and just haul them to the gut pile and dump them. I've never tried to eat one, but my brother says they are very strong and rank. Guess it depends on the feed.

Not surprisingly, the gut pile can be pretty productive in itself out of the back of a Pickup truck rigged for hunting, after a day or two of dumping the bodies. Just another way of baiting. Might be one of the reasons they taste so bad.

Anyway, nice job and keep up the pictures, although they would be much nicer if someone would edit out the guy always standing or sitting in the background!:D ROFL

ours are farm raised. after the fair, we pull the ribbons off their rumps and remove the ear tags and turn 'em loose.

haven't tried to eat one in years. i could barely stand being downwind from him while waiting for a shot.

if i wasn't in the pic, no one would believe i shot it. sometimes i lie just a bit.

I don't really know how to break this to you so will just out and say it. I know you thought Thanksgiving was coming, but those aren't Turkeys! Your neighbors are not going to thank you when you drop one by for their Thanksgiving dinner! ..:D

Don't you shoot anything edible?...

You lie to someone besides your wife?...OMG now will have to make sure you aren't doctoring the pictures...ROFL.

May have figured this out, except voice recognition software put a P. Dog into it instead of a Hog. Haven't figured out how to edit "Attachments" yet so am stuck with the P. dog or ground squirrel or whatever it is.
