In the Ear? Really???

Double R,
Impressive! and about time. I knew if I hassled you enough, you would get PO'd and go shoot some hogs! Looks like you came out of rehab sober, for a change, and decided to show the Packrat that you still had it! Amazing what drying you out and a bath will do!

I'll give you this, that was some impressive shooting. Was the third guy shooting Charlie "Skunk" Johnson? I knew he was down in that area, but didn't know you had teamed up with him!

It also looks like all three shooters were using thermals from the dust being kicked up around the pigs. Some of those long range shots I'm not sure you could have even seen them at night with anything But a thermal scope.

Well as much as I hate to choke it out, great job!

BTW, want some baby possums?

no idea what the running count is. don't even keep track of it yearly.

skunk wasn't on this hunt. it was an OinK production with special guest who was along to open gates and test hot wires.

Double R, a couple of quick questions.

Zero'd range on those scopes? 100, 150, 200 yds?

Are you even doing any daylight hunting anymore?

Sure you don't want some baby possums? They will eat about anything and are PO'ing the cat by eating all it's food. Will ship them for a free trial.

Having a bad day, got my Rogaine and Viagra mixed up and now can't get my hair to lie down to comb!

i'm sighted at 100. i've often been advised to sight in at 75 or something high at 100 or whatever. there's some logic to that but i like to keep it simple and consistent across several guns. as for the others i hunt with... they're content to be sighted in at 'minute of hog'.

i shoot occasionally during the day. will be testing a few new guns at a bud's ranch tomorrow. we test loads and check zero at the barn, then look for hogs till dark. have a few mid range shots setup with feeders. i would hunt hogs all day long if they would come out. he has some mld tags so hope to put a 6.5 prc to work.

might be innersted in the possims. can you send pix? if i eat one and don't like it, can i return the other(s)

Double R,
Well, since you didn't reply earlier we took the possums down to the shelter, but when we got there, the attendant, who spoke with a southern accent, took a look at them, got a glazed look in his eyes and started salivating like one of Pavlov's dogs! I decided that maybe we better find some place else to give them a permanent home.

On the way out, some young, early 20's, lady started oohing and awwing over the baby possums and asked what their names were. I spontaneously answered DJ and Coy! She asked first which was which and I told her the ugly one was DJ, but didn't point out which was which. She launched into an extensive story about her pet possum when she was a kid, then she asked about what the cost of a re-homing fee would be and I told her to make an offer so she offered $25.00 and I took her up on it. She was cuddling and caressing them the last time we saw them as she got into her car.

So, problem solved. The Cat is happy, I'm happy and hopefully the possums are happy! Either that or maybe she conned us and by now they are lunch! In any case I now have a bottle of Soy Sauce to go on the steamed rice! AND my hair finally went down after about 4 hours!

mld tags?

Life is good!

I found a new place to hunt hogs!

When I was driving back to San Antonio from Corpus yesterday afternoon, I passed a sounder of hogs around 50 miles out of Corpus that stood about 15 feet from the side of I-37. There were over 30 hogs in the sounder and they were completely oblivious to all traffic. A few would have topped 250 pounds. I've seen less than 5 dead hogs on the sides of the road and I'm amazed I haven't seen more.

scrmblr,
It's obvious if you think about the lack of dead hogs along the roads! DJ, (Double R) pays the Texas teenagers to bring him dead hogs so it looks like he shot them and if there aren't any close, they have to scramble to find enough hogs to make it pay. I think they are cruising the roads to gather up all the dead hogs and there just aren't enough around the Abilene/Fort Worth area to even pay for their gas, so they wander further afield to make extra bucks.

I hope you can work out a deal with the locals so that you can hunt those sounders though! Previous City shooters S. of San Antonio of have screwed up the deal with a lot of people though, by being idiots.

Since you were out wandering the country, and DJ was out to someone's ranch trying to get some daytime hogs, we decided to hit the local gun range. I had gotten my lady friend a Smith and Wesson .22 Victory since her 9mm caused her some problems with her hands after shooting lots of rounds and we had a bet that I could out shoot her with my .45 against her .22 after setting the sights on the .22. The bet was 50 rounds at 25 yards, Standard 25 yard target, shooters choice of stance. Loser had to cook dinner. Since Steamed rice was easy, I couldn't lose!

Anyway, to my chagrin, she shot ALL 50 rounds inside the 8 ring, blew the center out of the target, and I pulled two rounds clipping the 8 ring. Darn! I guess my days of competition shooting are over. If I'd have thought about it, would have taken pictures of the targets, but didn't until we were on our way home. Lady is deadly with that .22. AND she not bad with the 9mm, it's just that her hands hurt after so many rounds and is just as good with the .308 Scout M1A, or her 30-30, against Hogs. Anyway, we had fun. Range personnel were totally amused by the whole thing. I had to take some ribbing from them, but it was OK. Just got to remember never to PO her.

Anyway, quiet day today, waiting on a delivery of two 20 Gauge model 12 shotguns to restore for my brother and niece. Nothing else going on!

This space for rent!

Well, if DJ had gotten some daytime hogs, he would have been in here crowing like a rooster and cackling like a hen about the pigs he shot! So, from inference, he didn't get any hogs! Don't know what I'm going to have to do to to get him back out shooting hogs again. If he hadn't been so set on crowing about the 46 hogs him and Oink shot, we could have milked those pictures out over about 2 weeks and given him some time to get some more, but he doesn't listen real well! Have considered using hand gestures to get his attention, but have to be satisfied with just waving my hand. When I've waved 5 times, he's had the equivalent of a full hand!

Hey, LRH admin, if you are monitoring this, we will rent you advertising space on this thread! You'll get more views of your advertising than you are presently getting off your other ads. Oh, this is your site isn't it? Doggone it, something always messes up my plans!

Can you tell the difference between Dedication and Commitment? Pretty easy really, djones may be dedicated to having a Bar-B-Q, but the Pig is committed!

i keep coming back to this picture and wonder if there is any justice in this life. Here we have ne'er do well jones with a shop area big enough to park a Gator, Trash cans, a shooting/work table, lots of floor space and for all I know behind the camera is an area big enough for a combine! And I'm stuck with about a 10' x 10' area with enough room to get my work bench. Gun safe and a few cabinets! Not only that but if I pointed one of my Rifles out of my garage door, I'd have the Police, Sheriff, a SWAT team, Boy Scouts and half the National Guard at my door in about 10 minutes. The longest sight picture i can get through my scopes out of my garage is 76 yards, and I don't dare let anyone see me aiming a rifle to adjust the scope(s).

This just ain't fair!.

Work bench 1.JPG Work bench 2.JPGHmmmm....the thumbnails came in sideways. At least before I posted them. Will see what happens.

Some guys have a "Man Cave". I've got what could be called a "Man Pocket".
Darned area is so small that if I pass gas, I'll asphyxiate before I could get out of the area! Wonder if Admin will let that one stand?

Anyway there just isn't any justice in some things!

The pictures were vertical in my Archives, don't know why they came in sideways.

scrmblr, I miss the work shop I had in Vail, AZ where we restored the donated rifles and sold them to benefit the Arizona Veterans Outreach program. Some of the guys were Border patrol and got transferred, another guy took a job in San Jose, CA., lasted about a year and moved back, but to an outlying town and then I sold the house and moved too! After my wife passed away, it just wan't home anymore. Got rid of my bigger tools, Drill Press, Lath, Bench grinder, etc.

Now that we've got most of the remodeling/landscaping done to this house, am getting bored. Still too cold to travel much, at least where we want to go, and aside from a couple of 1950's shotguns my brother and niece want restored, don't have much going on. Retch Rancid, aka djones doesn't keep me busy hassling him and isn't giving me anything to work with. I did go back and count all the Hogs in pictures he has posted and they total to 236 total starting from his first post. In the last batch of photo's he claims 112 hogs, but I only count about 60, and some of them he photo'd twice, maybe 3 times. I think all three shooters took off their shoes, counted on their toes and fingers and then doubled or tripled the number because they kept losing count. Either that or they counted each leg as a whole hog!

Will be really, really glad when it warms up and we head out and can do some Hog hunting ourselves and not have to depend on djones. Then I can start my own thread and call it "Stick it in your ear, Really!". My lady friend was born in Santa Rosa, New Mexico (Yes, New Mexico IS a State, and you would be surprised how often we get asked that question) and her relatives there are saying that the hogs have followed the Pecos River up from the border and are starting to be a nuisance, so there may be some hunting there when we get there!

I guess what I have is referred to as Spring Fever!

There is nothing wrong with toys scattered everywhere. Enjoy it, because the day after tomorrow, they will be teenagers and they won't want to be seen with their parents. Then you can build your own "Man Pocket". And when you do, make sure it is adequately ventilated.

I imagine in djones case, his parents didn't want to be seen with him, but that is a different story altogether.

Somewhere back in the thread is a story about a friend of ours who let some San Antonio hunters on to his property to shoot Hogs. This is what you are up against getting people to let you shoot hogs on their property.

Going to shut down for the night.

Packrat,

I miss my house back in South Carolina. I had 150 square-foot room built off the side of the garage for my toys. Now we live in a house in a cookie-cutter subdivision, so I've got no space. I definitely enjoy the kids, and it is fun to watch them grow. I've started letting my three-year-old daughter watch the hunting shows with me, and I think I have a hunter in the making!

Remember, DJ only has 10 fingers and nine toes. Once the total gets past 19, all bets are off when it comes to his counting. You'll have to ask him to tell you the story of how a beaver bit off one of his toes.

scrmblr,
Beaver?, bit off Toes?......None of the Beavers I've ever encountered had teeth, but better not go there! Guess he had better be glad it wasn't something else, but then, he is fortunate that it will still let him get up to 20! Guess a toe is better than the alternative!

We used to take people with us to the ranch, but after a couple of what we thought were good safe hunters showed us different, including one Air Force Sergeant almost taking a shot at a hog with kids on a swing set about 100 yds in the background, we stopped doing that! There is something about Hogs that make normal people go berserk and throw all their training right out the window. Or maybe it's just that some people like to kill animals. One guy was running all over the place with a .357 in his hand chasing a Armadillo and taking pot shots and just missing a dog, til we stopped him! We have aborted several hunting trips because of idiots. One on the first day!

Biggest pain we have to put up with now is our cousin who insisted on shooting hogs with a .243. Guess he can't take the recoil of a real rifle. Wouldn't be so bad if he was a good shot, but he continuously wounds them and then we have to take to the brush to track them down because of the adjoining properties with families. Finally told him to get a .30 or larger, and if he wounds one, he is going into the brush to track them down himself. I watched him take a shot one day and the barrel of his rifle was moving in about a 3" circle, he was so excited. I didn't trust his aim as my backup to take a shot, even with a 12 gauge, if the hog charged. Hunting with him is guaranteed to tighten up your pucker strings! Really a shame cause he is an excellent cook and always brings lots of food!

I had a 3 car garage in Vail and had the whole single car bay to myself. When we combined houses, I lost more than half of a bay at the new house until we can finish sorting through duplicated stuff. Then I'll get my shop back! I doubt at my age if I am going to go as elaborate as i was before!

Well got bridges to burn, people to do, so will be back later!
