shooting a 300 ham'r from wilson combat with 125gr tnt.
rat sac, the 300 ham'r is a 30 cal. just got a labradar and checked my 125 tnt loads yesterday... averaged over 2,700 fps. not bad for ar15 case. the 1:15 twist has a bit to do with the velocity. my load is a bit over max, so don't try that at home.
came with slr adj gas block. my mods are xlr stock, tbeast ultra suppressor, geissele ssa-e trigger, tbr brass catcher (don't tell double nutt spy. i called his a man purse), trijicon mk3 60mm scope, mini dvr in pouch attached to stock to record, 30 round pmags or lancer and some kind of adjustable nylon sling. don't remember if i have a different spring and/or buffer. that should pretty much sum it up.
OK, from the above statement, That adds up to about $14 -16,000 worth of rifle and accessories. Just to shoot smelly old Hogs! So in my own self defense, and not to be outclassed, guess I have to post my favorite Hog rifles and ammo.
OK, so here goes! I call this post "Shooting on the Cheap!"
Ammo - I order the highest class M-80 7.62 x 51 FMJ from Lake City Industries. By buying in 500 Rd bulk, on sale, they cost me about .58 per round and the local reloaders trade me reloaded rounds for the empty brass since the heavier military brass can be reloaded many multiples of times! My postman keeps trying to get me to change to .223 every times he delivers an order of 500 rds, which lasts about 4 months since I go to the range a lot when it is warmer! I sometimes wonder if the Hogs feel slighted when I kill them with such a mundane round. These rounds are accurate (1 MOA +/-) out to about 600 meters and will kill darn near anything you can hit! I have no idea the FPS or Foot pounds at whatever range, just that it will kill hogs, which is all I hunt anymore. I can fire 4 rounds for what it cost djones to fire 1, but as you can tell, I am a just a snobbish purist. If I was shooting long range, which I no longer do, good old Military M- 113(?) Sniper ammo works fine unless competing.
Rifles - I have 3 Springfield Armory M1A rifles,
1) A Super match with a Springfield Armory 6-24 x 56 Scope readable in mils. The scope cannot even be zero'd at less than 400 yards, so suspect it is a ex-military scope. I loaned a guy $800.00, with the rifle/scope as security, when he was going through a divorce and he never came back for it. This was like 8-10 years ago. i used to shoot regularly at 800 yards with this rifle and it is extremely accurate, but heavy!
2) Bought new, SA National Match which has a 6-24 x 50 Carl Zeiss AOMC scope when not using iron sights. This is my preferred Hog hunting rifle and handles the M-80 rounds quite well. I have the original Walnut stock and also an Archangel synthetic, but both are heavy stocks. I just got a Fiberglass stock for it trying to reduce weight and am playing with the setup.
3) SA M1A Socom 18" - This is the Rifle my lady uses, unless she wants to use the Marlin 336, 30-30 I bought her for her Birthday. Usually she likes the Semi-auto function of the Socom when hunting hogs though! It also handles the M-80 rounds quite well.
The only other hog rifle worth noting, is a Remington 700 VTR, in .308 which has a long story behind it and resulted in Remington giving me a brand new rifle because of manufacturing defects. Maybe some other time!
So as you can tell, I have to have the absolute best when hunting Hogs and I'm sure they appreciate my consideration!
Freedom is not free! It needs to be refreshed with the blood of corrupt politicians periodically!......Packrat 6,
