In the Ear? Really???

DJ,

I'll do anything to please the ladies!

On a serious note, thanks for the heads-up on the Hornady Superformance ammo in AR's. Even though my Armalite .308 has an adjustable gas block, I'd rather not chance destroying the gun. I'll stick to the BARNES 150g TTSX's and use the Superformance ammo in my R700.

ummm... i don't think the punchline had anything to do with ladies. perhaps i didn't tell it right :D

been trying to catch some hogs rooting up a field for a month now. they seem to be out very late, but it's a little farther than what i can get to on a week night and still function the next day. last night i got there about 2:30 and six big hogs were out, but i could only get within range of three. one was next to the brush and the other two were on the other side of the pivot. i was hiding behind a tire on one of the towers.

i dropped the one close to the brush with an ear shot, or there abouts. i couldn't risk shooting through the sprinklers at running hogs at that angle, so i swung the rifle back to aim down the pivot line waiting for the others who would certainly be racing for the brush.

i picked up the first runner and got three shots off before he went down. i had just started to sweep back when the third one entered the scope view. again i got three shots off and the second shot made him miss a step, but he regained his footing on the next stride and was instantly in the cover. if this keeps up i may have to put the nv scope back on the 308 if the thermal isn't back soon.

checked some of the baited spots on the way home to see what else might be out that late. came upon this guy who was veeeery wary. put a round in the ear area and he flopped. when i got to him he wasn't quite finished so i let go of a couple suppressed 45acp 230 grainers into his noggin.

The hogs are nowhere to be found. Yesterday morning, I pulled the memory cards from 5 cameras. Had around 3k photos of turkey, deer, raccoons, opossums, and crows, but not a single hog photo.

Since I cannot post any hog kills, I thought I'd post a few photos of my hog hunting guns.

The bolt action is a R700 5R in .308. I've got a NF SHV scope and a McCann rail. I use an Armasight clip on NV scope. I usually run it with my 7.62 suppressor.

The semi is an Armalite AR-10 in .308. Its got a NF NXS 5.5-22x56 scope and an ATN clip on thermal. I also use the suppressor on this rig.

very cool weapons. i'd love to look through the clip ons. if i had thoz and no hogs, i'm afraid i'd have to start killing the coons, opossums and crows. what about calling predators?

I'd love to start predator hunting, it is finding the time that is the hard part. My 1 year old daughter was up 5 times before midnight last night and my wife has a cold, so I don't see me getting out into the woods this week.

Speaking of opossums, we seem to have a lot of ticks on our property. My wife read on Facebook that opossums can eat 5k ticks per day, so she wants me to trap opossums and bring them onto our property so they can eat all of the ticks. I was kind of at a loss for a reply.

I like the clip on units since I can take them off and use the rifles during the day or switch them to other rifles. They are very versatile. With the R700, I put the McCann rail on so I can add an IR flashlight or a digital recorder. When I use the IR flashlight, I can easily make out fine details at several hundreds of yards on a dark night.

Glad you like those clip ons I'm really on the fence about one. I don't get to hunt hogs a lot so to buy a dedicated thermal would really be a waste. So I thought a clip on would work. Just didn't know if they really worked well or not. I don't trust the reviews on optics planet. Maybe I'll order one now. What a wide world that would open up for me on options. I to will show my hog slaying rigs. Just happened to clean them Sunday for an Easter ar afternoon.

snox,

i'm not 100% on this, but given your history, i'm pretty sure you're referring to strap-ons.... which is something totally different.

I would not go with an ATN. Their customer service sucks! I was having huge issues alligning the crosshairs on the clip on with my NF scope. Made adjustments, hit "save", but the save would not keep. Eventually I turned the reticle color to black and use the illumination from my scope.

I had another issue with the midline height on the scope. The owners manual states that the midline of the scope and the midline of the thermal clip on should be within 3mm of each other. Called ATN customer support and asked for the measurement. Jackass that answered stated the midline height measurement was not something he access to and I could measure it myself. Told him that for what I paid for it he clip on, he service was horrible.

I wrote an honest write up of the encounter on Cabela's website, but somehow my review was never posted.

Snox,

Nice collection! My son is at Parris Island getting lots of practice cleaning M-16s. I can't wait for him to get home so he can clean all of my ARs!

Does the ATN do ok at the higher magnification range of the NXS ? I had looked into a clip a while back and was told they were for 1-6x scopes.

The ATN has a focus knob, and I'm impressed with the clarity on max zoom with the NF. I can make out clear details on small animals at almost 400 yards with the ATN clip on when using the NF 5.5-22x56 scope. It would be perfect except for ATN's crappy customer service and the inability of the scope to save the zeroed crosshairs.
