Len, I guess I'll be a little different here. I have and use only one rifle exclusively for hunting, but it was bought/built thinking that I would hunt big game worldwide (a .375 is legal minimum on some African game). With that off the table, I'll take the .338 WM. A wide range of factory ammo available. But as a handloader and cast bullet shooter, it can be used for everything from small game (rabbits, squirrels, ect.- head shots), to big game with a vast array of jacketed/mono bullets available. Even small big game and varmints can be "cleanly" taken with a wide metplat cast bullet at close to moderate ranges. Heck... that hard cast will work pretty darn good if you want to take it fishing memtb

270 with 1:8 you can find 150gr anywhere 7mm and 300 are sold if you run low on you stash, and roll your own 160-190gr rbt uld from chinchaga, matrix is looking into producing 165 vld again, berger 170 vld, hammer bullets has 117-168. Not to mention all the big name brands 160gr on down.

I just joined so I could add one to the list.

Just built this gun so I have not put any metal on meat yet, but the 6.5mm bullet is known as a bang/flop so I'm sure it will prove to do just fine as far as a man want =s to shoot it....

Pros;
Great BC on small bullets. Most 123gr come in at .510 G1 and only gets better the bigger you go!

Con;
No loaded ammo to be had anywhere!
No brass to be found anywhere!

I've got less than 200 rounds down the pipe so far, but out to 400yds is makes hitting steel childs play!

I own just about all the major players mentioned here...300WM, 300WSM, 7mmRM, 7mmRUM, 280, 308, 6.5X55, 5.56, 7.63X39, 243, 25-06 and my long time favorite 270WIN.

But for right now I really digging this new rifle...it does have a break (my first) so recoil is of no issue no matter who gets behind the butt plate!gun)

300WM for me.

1. Can be loaded with light bullets and lower pressures with H4895 for varmints.
2. The Berger 215 Hybrid's are devastating on large game with more than enough energy if stretching out to long range.
3. Availability of factory ammo just about anywhere.
4. Manageable recoil with a decent muzzle brake for long shooting sessions at the range.

Add me to the '06 camp. Close to far and load down or up. Scads of great bullets and other components. Factory ammo everywhere. Everybody makes them and they get used all over the world. Plenty accurate. If this cartridge was just developed recently, everybody would be all over it.

I chose the 30/06 earlier on but in reality I carry one of my 270 win's. I just have enormous confidence with this chambering and these days it is more effective than ever. It has slayed them all for me for four decades...and them some guy invented Reloder 26.
