Ideal powder for speed and stability in 7-08

You will need to clear mind of conventional reloading procedures for the most part to get the most out of the Hammers
This is a very true statement. I went to a local custom hand loader to help me out. He did not hesitate to give me a general load to start with. The ES 3 says it all. I would not have come up with W760 on this one.

Yeah, based on what I was reading about Parabolic Drag Reduction, the grooves help reduce the drag on the bullet while traveling in the barrel, allowing them to move more freely. What I've gathered, that means less pressure build and more velocity for a similar weight bullet.

Please explain, I'm trying to learn.

I'm trying to learn too. There are a lot of big words in this article but based on what I read in it and then applying it to what I know about the physics of how a bullet travels down a barrel lead me to conclude that the design of the Hammer bullets means they are causing A LOT less drag than a similar weight or even sized projectile.

It's really extremely insightful, and quite intriguing. Whether the results were completely intended or not, I don't know.

Perhaps saying "less pressure build" was a bad choice of words, I wasn't sure exactly how to word that, but I think it's something about less pressure in the rifle chamber that I was trying to say. Meaning you're not going to see pressure signs at similar velocities, or similar charge weights like you would with similar bullets. You're obviously still going to have to generate pressure to move the bullet, but it seems like the bullet is more efficient because of it's design allowing you to move it faster with less pressure(?). Again, I'm a little over my own head I'm just trying to make sense of it all as well.

Thanks for the headache. (ha-ha) I'm not sure how that equates to the anti fouling grooves cut into a mono rifle bullet, but Ill ask the guys in the fluid group to explain it.

I don't know that they're acting like anti-fouling grooves as you see in other bullets. Perhaps that was the intention, but I think they end up reducing the drag so much that they turned into microchannels like mentioned in that article. These are definitely a different style of groove than what you see on other mono bullets.

I just ordered some 120gr hammer hunters for my brother's savage 7-08. I'm looking for the ideal powder as far as speed and temp stability are concerned. This gun will be used year round for shooting anything from varmints and tannerite to deer and possibly hogs.
Thanks in advance!
CFE223

Don't forget the ELK!

You have a lot to ingest about Hammer bullets
Get me started please. Simple stuff 1st. If I take a 7mm-08 and load a Hammer 177/172 to 60,000 psi with RL-17 and load a Barnes 175 to 60,000 psi with RL-17 (same OAL due to mag length restriction) how much faster will the hammer bullet go? Feel free to change powders if it's easier to illustrate. TIA.

You can't figure it that way, you have to clear you mind and think outside the box but given your parameters the Hammer will be 85- 100fps faster

There are many powders you could use in 7-08. The biggest challenge is finding one that is available. H4350, Varget, Reloader 15 and Staball 6.5 are all options if you are looking for a temp stable powder that would work in a 7-08.
In all honesty 120gr Hammers from a 7-08 may not be something you want to shoot at a deer more than 500 or 600 yards so temperature stability may not be as important for this gun. Unless you are shooting at longer ranges and in a wide variation of temperatures, you won't see a large benefit from the more temperature stable powders. You may end up having good performance from CFE 223 or another less temp stable powder that you can actually find.
