Hornady ELD-X Official Thread

Yeah I really wanted to try the RL-26 because of its success in your cartridges and others. I seen a couple good loads with RL-22 in the .308 Norma so I figure RL-23 should be able to match them but with better temp stability and consistency. If worse comes the worse than I will just order a few pounds of 26 and keep my fingers crossed that it works haha.

I am able to get about 71gr of RL-23 in the .308 Norma with a 208gr ELD seated at 3.550" OAL and the base of the bearing surface is at the base of the neck. This is not compressed but is very close to it. The Bertram brass I am using has less room in it compared to Norma. Not sure if I will be able to squeeze enough RL-26 in it to reach pressures but I am open to anything and I am pretty much paving the way with these newer powders in an older cartridge like the .308 Norma. It will be interesting to see how it does with modern propellants and a 28" barrel!

I think you will be able to pressure out with RL26 and you may get as much as 100' more than 23......Rich

Wow! Well the rifle should be finished by the end of the week and I am going to run a pressure test in 1gr increments with each of the 3 powders I am testing and will run them through the chrono to see what I get. I am thinking about ordering some RL26 just to see how much of a gain I can get with it.

If it works for you like it has for me, I am pretty sure you will like it! Very low es too!.....Rich

Great! Have you had a chance to test its temp stability? I am not too worried about it, as long it is around .5 fps per degree or less.

The temp stability is pretty darn good. It is not far behind the Hodgdon extreme powders

How do you think reloader 26 would be in a .260 ackley with a 30" barrel? Would it be too slow? With my 147 eldm load I'm heavily compressed at 49 grains H-4831sc.

I'm getting decent accuracy but my E.S. seems to be in the 20 fps range.

It would likely be borderline but it might be worth a try. You could probably get 3 more grains than H4831.

At 49 grains H4831SC I get very slight ejector marks on 2 out of 5 rounds or so that are barely noticeable if turned in the light, so I call my max 48.7, where would you start with Reloader 26? I can't find data on it.

It is a little slower than RL22 and 7828 by a couple grains. It is faster than H1000 by about 2 1/2 grains. Start with your max of H4831 and you will probably end up with a case full of 26 as your max; if you are able to pressure out with it? Even if you can't quite make full pressure, I think you will get decent velocity......Rich

143 worked perfect on a doe I shot this past Sunday. Caliber size hole in the entry side lung, exit side lung was shredded.

About 2500fps muzzle velocity is 2680fps! I'm considering stepping up to a bigger 6.5! These fly well for me, I'd probably want for nothing more if the were going an extra 300fps faster
