Hornady ELD-X Official Thread

I don't have a WSM but based on the extra capacity vs the SS, I think it will work great, at least with a 215 ........Rich

Great! I read the thread on your .300 SS and wow was that impressive. I would like to try RL-26 in my .308 Norma and it has very similar capacity to the .300 WSM so I am hoping it works as well in it as it does in your SS and Sherman cartridges.

I haven't loaded any up yet but it you check over at accurate shooter and sniper's hide it's giving impressive results in the .300wm and I'm sure you can find some dope from the guys at the hide on the 300 Norma as well.

Across the board with multiple calibers people are getting 100-200fps improvements with it with no pressure signs compared to the other more standard powders they've been using.

It seems that Alliant may well have hit a real home run with it.

I've been using it with 130's in my 6.5 WSM and 82's in my 22 Creedmoor. It's an extremely versatile powder.

RL-26 appears to have a lot of untapped potential. Rich has been a fan from the beginning. I haven't tried it yet in any cartridges, but ought to.

Nice to see some more post-hunting season reports on the ELD-X terminal performance. All in all, accuracy & terminal performance are getting the thumb's up - best as I can tell.

And I've yet to read of any failures to expand on game. I like that... gun)

RL-26 is like hen's teeth right now and I could not find it anywhere around my area. I have found some 1lb cans online but I do not want to pay the full hazmat and everything just to try out one pound. I did happen to find RL-23 at Cabelas yesterday so I picked a pound of it up to try.

These new bullets defiantly seem to be doing the trick. I can't comment on any personal game with them this season. Everything we got was with an A-MAX or SST, every time we took out the rifle's loaded with ELDs we didn't see much . Oh well, glad to see them doing the job for others though!

I think RL23 will be a good powder, but not nearly as versatile as 26. I say that because it is not nearly as dense so you are limited in capacity with a lot of cases that might like this burn rate. Also, it does not seem to have the energy that 26 has.
Here are a couple examples of what I mean about RL23 vs RL26. IdahoTrekker is able to max out his 300 SS with 215 Bergers with 26, but can not get enough 23 in to do so even though it is faster. I am pretty sure that my new 338 Sherman (when it gets here) will be in the same situation.
We have had RL26 available quite often here in the Coeur d'Alene area..Rich

Yeah I really wanted to try the RL-26 because of its success in your cartridges and others. I seen a couple good loads with RL-22 in the .308 Norma so I figure RL-23 should be able to match them but with better temp stability and consistency. If worse comes the worse than I will just order a few pounds of 26 and keep my fingers crossed that it works haha.

I am able to get about 71gr of RL-23 in the .308 Norma with a 208gr ELD seated at 3.550" OAL and the base of the bearing surface is at the base of the neck. This is not compressed but is very close to it. The Bertram brass I am using has less room in it compared to Norma. Not sure if I will be able to squeeze enough RL-26 in it to reach pressures but I am open to anything and I am pretty much paving the way with these newer powders in an older cartridge like the .308 Norma. It will be interesting to see how it does with modern propellants and a 28" barrel!
