Hornady ELD-X Official Thread

Could you update us on the your (and the Gunwerks crew) experience with the performance of this bullet in the field? Curious to hear your pros and cons. I read Hornady's technical article on its performance and how it compared to the ABLR and LRX bullets. Great read and if the bullet performs exactly like the data showed, it's a superb projectile. I've only shot paper with them, but have great sub moa loads for my 300 wsm, 7 stw and 6.5-284 norma that I want to use hunting next season. I was reluctant to use it this past season since I wasn't sure how it would compare to my proven hand loads.
Thanks for you time

Doug

Watch this. It is a episode from Long Range Pursuit with Gunwerks and Hornady hunting together with the ELD-X and showing off its capabilities.

I think I read the entire thread but did not see any one chime in about RL26 and a 260 Remington. I too was trying to use H4831 but had some real compressed load issues at 48+ grains. I have resorted to H4350 with the 143 gr EDX bullets but the speed is sub par. Would like to hear anyone's input on RL26 powder with 143 gr. EDX's

If you could hold 48 grains of 4831, you will be able to load 51-52 grains of RL26. I would definitely give it a try. If it is enough to pressure you out, you WILL see more velocity.......Rich

I actually just did some load development with reloder 26 and a 260 AI with the 147 ELD-M. You can go back to page 181 of this thread, or here is a link to my thread with pictures and such:

http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f28/260-ai-147-eld-m-powder-selection-179838/index2.html

I loaded up to 50.5 g in my .260 Ackley, and powder came up to the base of the neck, still didn't have any issues with compression messing with seating, and I'm seating .050" off for a COL of 2.865". And also...my 50.5-grain load yielded 3092 fps average...getting into the realm of the 6.5 SAUM pushing a 147 grain pill that fast. It also helps that I have a 30" barrel though.

Interesting! Did anyone wonder why there was absolutely no discussion, pics, etc., regarding the first antelope at 800 yards?
Looking at what his back legs did and how quick he cratered I don't think there was a whole lot to talk about.

You never know with these videoed hunts just how much footage was shot and then has to be edited, cut, and squeezed into a 30 minute or hour show.

It looks like in all three cases the bullet got the job done, too bad they weren't able to recover any of them.

Overall I like the bullet but I've been very disappointed with the separations I've seen even at moderate range.

Hopefully they'll backtrack and use the same bonding process they use with the interbond. If they do, it will be about as close to a perfect long range hunting bullet as we could hope for.

I worked up some test loads with RL23 tonight on 125gr Peregrine (monometal) and 130gr Accubond LR.

I started at 44.5gr and went up to 46.5gr for each.

That's making for a very full case in both cases. No "crunching" of the powder when seating so it's not a tightly compressed load but it's full to the base of the neck even with the starting load and at 46.5 I think I've maxed out case capacity unless I want to single load them. I'm loading to my max mag length.

I should get some time over the weekend to shoot them and then maybe I'll shoot up some of Mario's 140gr Amaxes and Bergers before I send him the leftovers and the load data HA!

Elkaholic: I know all the disclaimers about using caution with max loads but 51gr. seems like a lot of powder.

Codyadams: I have looked at your info but did not know how much the AI would have affected max pressures, etc. It probably is just a matter that your shells can hold more powder.

Bottom-line, I may try a load under 51 gr. and not having any crunching.

I don't think 51 grains would work in a standard .260...I think it would fit, but it would be into the neck significantly and be HEAVILY compressed if your COL is anything similar to mine. As I found, I was at the neck/shoulder junction with 50.5 in an ackley version, 51 grains may be ino the neck even for me.

As I recall, I don't believe I felt any crunching while seating the bullet until I was at either 49.5 or 50 grains. 50.5 I'm certain had some crunch upon seating the bullet.

Just checked Midway USA's web site. I had placed the Hornady .308 212gr ELD-X bullets on my Wish List. The Midway price has increased 11% since I placed the item on my Wish List. I found this message from Midway:

Attention

The price of Hornady ELD-X Bullets 30 Caliber (308 Diameter) 212 Grain Boat Tail Box of 100 has changed from $36.49 to $40.99.

Still a reasonable price. The bullets must be selling well enough for Hornady to raise the cost...

I just re read my post and I can see where you are coming from. I was not suggesting that he actually load 51 grains, but was making a point that the case would hold a lot more RL26 so he should be able to use it even though the 4831 did not work. Hope that makes sense......Rich

So, has anyone seen the 7mm 180gr ELD-M from Hornady? This bullet has been listed on their website for a month or two and the BC is still listed as "To Be Determined." Anyone have a guess at what the BC would be on this bullet? I am personally not planning to shoot them because I do not own a 7mm, but just curios what your guys' best guess is. Considering their 175gr ELD-X is around .680 G1, I am going to guess the 180gr ELD-M will be close to a .7 G1 BC. This would be a really solid number, I just hope they eventually release some more data some time soon. Maybe they are saving it for SHOT? Who knows...
