Hornady ELD-X Official Thread

I have a heads up on the 143 ELDX bullets. I know of at least two cases where the bullets are running .0002"-.0003 oversize. Not necessarily a big deal unless your throat is tight to begin with, but definitely raises pressure! The good news is, I shot a .014" with them:D......Rich

Took the 208's for a spin at a mile with my 300 norma. They did great at 3160fps!

just got a few boxes and had one with at work just mic'd it at .2643

Yup, and I just got off the phone with a gunsmith who built one of my 6.5 Shermans who was having pressure issues and his measured .2645" YIKES! I love the bullets, but that really sucks. I guess all the eldx guys may have to cut new throats. I did talk to another guy who built an SS that had some oversize bullets, but his new lot is .264. I am not trying to bad mouth Hornady, but this is important for people to know!.......Rich

I just measured 10 bullets from one of the first runs if not the first. Lot #2151850.

Six measured exactly .264
One measured .26385
Three measured .26395

The low measurements could simply be measurement error but, if if not, pretty darned consistent.

There is a solution to this measuring discrepancy. I use a tape measure.:)

Hi Guys, been following this thread for a while, lurking for all the info the "Testers" were putting out there... :D

Still waiting for my .300 Win.Mag. barrel and got some Berger 215's lined-up already, although these new ELD-X from Hornady look promising.

Got a few questions, if some of you will be keen on chipping in...

- Which one would you reckon may be the best bullet choice for a .300 WM in a 26" 1 in 11" twist barrel ? 200... ? 212...?

- What kind of seating depth do these bullets require ? Close to the lands, like the VLD's ?

- Could the powder loads/combinations used for the A-Max be GTG for these ones, as well (same bullet weight) ?

- Does Some of you have a starting Load with H1000 powder ?

So many questions...I know

Thanks
:D

Here are my first eight rounds to break in my new Proof 7mm and my first eight rounds of ELD-X. The flyer is cold bore, brand new rifle. So far I like what I see on the new rifle and the bullets.

I'm just a beginning reloader and fairly new to LRH but I've been hunting for my whole life. I'm not trying to say this is anything special just reporting my results.

Rifle: Proof Terminus 7mm Rem Mag 24" barrel
Bullet: ELD-X 162gr
Brass: Nosler new factory trimmed etc
Primer: Winchester
Powder: H1000 - 67gr
Distance to lands: .020"
Twist: 8.44
Distance to target: 100 yards
Average velocity: 2884 fps

I guess my next step is to work up loads in .5 gr increments and see if I can find something that improves on this..

I see a few mentioning seating depth but has anyone found an ideal seating depth for their ELD-X's? Hornady told me they're fairly forgiving as to distance from the lands but I imagine we can figure out if they a lot of jump or not if we poll everyone.

The .308 ELD-X comes in 178, 200, 212, and 220gr.

Why such a slow twist instead of going with a 1:10?

The 220's are made with people who are single loading and have long throats in mind.

If I had to guess I'd say with that barrel the 200gr or lighter will work better for you than the 212's but you never know till you start working up loads.

Hornady is real good about answering the phone and helping people out so you might just want to give them a call for twist rate suggestions.

I don't know what elev. you will be shooting at, but you may be forced to stick with the 200's as the eldx is a very long bullet. The seating depth appears to be less critical with the eldx than with vld's. I would think you could use pretty much the same loads as with the amax. I don't have a 7 mag so have no input on starting loads. Good luck!.......Rich

With the difference in shape wouldn't he need to back off of the Amax loads by several grains and working back up to avoid pressure problems?

I haven't seen that in mine, but its always a good idea. The biggest issue i have seen is the ELDX tend to be oversize which seems to be more of a problem. I think the amax has at least as long a bearing surface. I would DEFINITELY recommend checking the eldx for diameter as a couple tenths can raise pressures considerably.
Good point on always starting low though........Rich
