That sounds like an amazing hog rifle! Did you have to significantly modify the bolt face to extract the pistol cartridge?

It was not easy, because the breach has to have an extractor slot so so the extractor can engage the case rim and it had/needed to be converted to a single shot, and that is why I would recommend a flat face bolt or a break open action like the T C Encore.

Where I hunt the chances of a follow up shots are rare and not needed because of the brush. If we want to thin the sounder we have a method that we use to line them up and hit then with a 300 RUM and 162 grain black tip penetrators at 600ft/sec more than in the 30/06'(Armor piercing) and normally 4 or 5 or possible with one shot.

I did some google searching after reading your post. Looks like 45 Raptor is identical to the 460 and solves to breach and bolt issues with extraction in bolt actions or Ar's 🤷‍♂️.

JE what part of Texas are you in? I live on the N. Side of Dallas and hunt in E. Texas - Houston Co.

Hello Jamie.
I have nothing against the Raptor and if you wanted to use an AR it would be an easier solution.

At the time I built the bolt action, It was so my brother in law could use the same ammo in his pistol without having to reload. He could also go to the indoor range and shoot the Non Magnum pistol or rifle using the 45 long colt ammo.

When I decided to go with the 460 S&W in the rifle, It made life simple because I have a pistol and a rifle that use the same ammo. 45 Long colt, 454 Casull and 460 S&W.

As far as I know there are no pistols in 45 Raptor and I cant find any load data for pistols. The 45 Raptor gives up 3,000 Psi design pressure to the the 460 so potentially they are not the same even though people can say they are. I use design pressures for all comparisons to keep things on a apples to apples comparison. With that said, If you don't have a 460 pistol the Raptor would be a good alternative as long as you reload.

Also I live on the south side of Houston.

Hello Everyone,

I just joined........ I have a 45 Raptor with a 20" barrel. I use it for bush wacking hogs, and am looking to get the most velocity possible. Has anyone tried using Hodgdon CFE BLK, or IMR 4198 to take advantage of the longer barrels rifles offer over pistols. I have two good working loads with IMR 4227 and Hodgdon H-110, but they are reduced charge weights because the Raptor is a rifle. Pressure is a major issue if you go straight out of the manual's pistol load data.....don't ask how I know....not good!

My apologies if this is the wrong thread to ask this on; please direct to to the proper one.

I use CFE BLK in my 7.62x39...its a fantistic, groups great and I can use any of the .310 bullets without POI shift. My velocity is just under 2300fps...not a screamer, but 150 yards in, it has severed me well on deer and hogs.

CaptnC I know this is off topic but do you still have fluted axis savage bolt for sale?

I like my .300blk with 120 grain Barnes tac tx. 150 yards is my longest shot but it dropped it right there. My other is a .260 remington ar platform. 120 grain pro hunter. Excellent too.

On my first Texas hunt. Stands and feeders out to 600 yards. I had been told that you need some HP to take down the big feral hogs.

because of the wild hog bristle plate

So I took my trusty target rifle 29 inch long throated 270 win with 150 spbt and 169.5 grain VLD's

Well that plate doesn't even really slow down .277. Every shot was pass throughs with chunks of lung tissue and blood spray out the far side. I didn't shoot HogZilla, but maybe 400 - 500# Great big hams and back straps. I learned right away that it is easier to deal with sub 200 pounders and piglets
