Some of you people must be perfect. I, and many others, are not, especially at my age.
I have "well" into 6 figures of firearms value and 3 figures in number, and sometimes, regardless of value, I have misplaced a few items. Not lost, just misplaced.
I am not perfect. Never said I was. If I do not clean as I go and put things back where they belong I will misplace them.
My firearms are on my hip, in the two gun safes, in cases ready to go shooting or hunting, on the work bench being cleaned or maintained, on the shooting bench at my club, or in the bedside compact safe.
I was at a U2 concert many years ago. As they do they had a few monologues about their political views. One of them was decrying our lack of "gun control" in this country. They had a video and description of a tragedy where a little kid had access to a firearm. The case in question was one in which dad had a handgun in a paper bag that the kid was able to reach. That is an extreme case but it illustrates the need for safe storage. Dad was an idiot. But at least he had a paper bag around the gun rather than just stashing the firearm behind a door or hanging it on a nail and forgetting about it.
I can kind of understand losing a gun in the field. I am anal about checking my area when I move on from a stop. If I have to stop for whatever reason or take of something and set a firearm down it will usually be resting on my pack or other gear. I keep my gear together so I can gather it all up at once. I do a mental checklist as well. As I said I am not perfect. I have routines so that I have less of a chance to lose things. I have certain pockets that I keep things in so Important items have less of a chance to get lost.
I do not set my gear where it has a chance to be harmed or destroyed. I would not set my rifle on the ground in front of my truck for example.
I was icefishing a few years ago. Packed up and went home. Next time I needed my GPS I could not find it. I looked for two years. I had given it up for lost. I went back to using an older one because the loss made me feel like if I replaced it I would lose it as well. Then I needed to blow some snow. I grabbed my old bibs and there it was in the pocket it always is in. I had loaned my good bibs to a buddy out fishing with me and used my old ones. I had looked in the new bibs but forgot I was wearing my old ones. Even my routine if using the same pocket for my electronics had failed me. My pistol on my hip did not get lost.
One thing that they state of Minnesota has done as a blue state is to step up and remove sales tax from gun storage devices. They have passes safe storage laws in many areas of the country. So with that in mind firearms storage in MN is just a little bit less expensive.
