Best caliber for shooting 500 to 2000 yds?

My set up on the Elr Edge was a 55 moa Nightforce base , Valdada 200 min. Adj.base topped off with two sets of Vortex precision rings and a Vortex Razor 5 x 20 x 50 . I had about 325 min.of elevation at my finger tips !

I will say The Wind Gods were on my side that day I put three shots in a 26 3/4" group at 3027 yards . It was a great feeling after my Open Heart Surgery to get this done !
Next try will be the 2 mile Challenge with a different 338 Edge I have .
Dont give up chasing your long range dream !
I have no training, no military background, just my pure desire to go long range!!

My Vote go's for the 338 cal.
At 1500+ yards it's very hard to call impact on the target and even harder off target with small caliber bullets.
300grs Pills make a nice splash on or off the target.

338 Edge for me.

Good luck with your search.

That's awesome. What's more awesome is you have a place to shoot 2 miles.

Rum Man is checking all the boxes for you now that he has included a 55MOA scope Base! Another option would be a 20MOA base with Warne's Argyle 90 MOA adjustable rings (OOP?). The 338 RUM is impressive for a LA. But cheapest 2,000 yard shooting is going to cost a LOT more than 500 or 1,000 yard shooting via more ammo, better optics, 30" barrels, etc. The 2-mile shooters really go big time with CheyTacs, Barretts, customs. Have fun 🤩

I've used my 7rem mag with an 8twist and 180hybrids and 197smk out to a mile. The 197 has a g7 of .4. It would be the smallest bullet I would do for what you're wanting. 30cal, 338 have lots of good options. 30nos, 300prc, 300norma, and the biggest 30cal bullet
My rem mag is slinging the 197 at 2825fps, in warm weather at my altitude it's super sonic to 2000yds. About 2800density altitude anyways.
Part of the equation is whether you want to be able to shoot 2000yards in good conditions occasionally, or if you want the setup to be good at shooting 2000yds. Depends what distances you'll be shooting most often

Im shooting my 300WM out to a mile. I. Running 220gr ELDX at 2858fps using 75.7gr of h1000. I had to get a better optic which I just got this last week. Im at 6700ft elevation which helps alot. Im in the process of building a 300PRC to get me out a little further with 230gr and up bullets.
It is not cheap and takes a lot of work to get there. It is a fun experience and addictive.
