Best caliber for shooting 500 to 2000 yds?

last summer I met up with a young guy that invited me to join them shooting long range .they have a 800 - 1600 yard range . when I started shooting with them there was Mike with a 243 . Bill with a 6.5 creedmore . the fella I met Jake , shot a 6.5 PRC and a 6.5 creedmore . His Dad Ed had a 6.5 PRC and a 300 PRC . I shoot a 338 Lapua . I shot with them about 3 weeks , Ed bought a 338 Lapua and sold the 6.5 . Jake sold his 6.5 creedmore . Mike stopped shooting past 1100 or 1200 yards . Bill stopped shooting on a regular basis . to make a long story short , now there's four of us with 338 Lapuas . we have shot at 2050 and 2375 . we should be able to extend this range out to 2 miles or more . it didn't take long for the guys to see bigger is better at long distances .
Old bull, young bulls.
Pushing an 800 BC projectile at 2700fps. At approx 1400yds, physics dictate that the projectile will start to de-stabilize, wobble-tumble, do funny stuff?
Not all bullets tumble when going subsonic

That is a big difference in range. Just about anything from 6 MM on up to a grand, but when you get farther out then you need to consider large calibers and even larger the further you get to your limit. Just my opinion.
I love how folks today are tossing out 2000 yards like it was 800 twenty five years ago! Wind..what wind? Oh...and don't forget cheapest to 2000 yards. My humble opinion...buy a Mountain Howitzer..... guaranteed to shoot from 500-2000...you will only pull that cord ONCE...making it the cheapest thing there is!

No substitute for horsepower...

The OP's question is like asking "what's the best car that gets good gas mileage for daily driving and will be competitive on the Formula One circuit?"

You can shoot a 223 Rem at 2000 yards. Doesn't mean you are going to hit anything. If you are serious about actually hitting stuff at 2000 yards, then cartridge selection starts at 338 Lapua and goes up from there.

Just so we are all on the same page, a 2000 yard requirement for a cartridge is an EXTREME requirement.

It's wasn't hard at ALL to shoot 2000 yards a few months ago..but with the shortage of everything today component wise..I think the first thing to go was the PIXIE DUST for 1200+ yards....I for one haven't been able to find that ANYWHERE! P.S. only needed for Cheapest applications to 2000!
