Scopes for 2000+

For you stuck on the NP-R1 I have to ask why you prefer it over the MOAR? They both have 20MOA below the crosshair. I've never shot past 1000yds so what am I missing?

MOAR has thicker crosshairs. I just was checking this out as I am gettin ready to order a NXS 5.5~22X56 ZS, HS with a NPR1. I also asked Shawns opinion and he agreed. Crosshairs are too thick for our taste.

As for the FFP, don't want one at all. Hated the last one for some of the same reasons and sure don't want to pay more to go there again. SFP for my taste and shoting style all the way.

Did not notice the thickness difference, thanks for bringing that to my attention. As far as FFP goes you are one of few I've heard not prefer it over SFP. I've been running FFP for about 10 years and just have trouble going back. What scares me the most is not turning the magnification all the way and having a calculation error. FFP eliminates any mistakes like this. Must not be an issue but the fear is still there. Do you mind elaborating on your dislike of FFP?

Hey NXS fans I've got good news! I've been resaerching the perfect reticle to meet my needs and just could not find THE ONE. Like some of you the NP-R1 was close but not perfect. I love the 1MOA subtensions on the vertical but don't understand why you would not also prefer 1MOA on your horizontal? Then along came the new MOAR reticle to not only solve that problem but includes a floating crosshair! For me this reticle is the best I've found but still not quite perfect. That is until I emailed NightForce to ask them why I can't have all those features in a FFP scope? They told me to watch there website because that exact scope is in the works right now!!! Sounds like heaven to me! For you stuck on the NP-R1 I have to ask why you prefer it over the MOAR? They both have 20MOA below the crosshair. I've never shot past 1000yds so what am I missing?

I have called Nightforce ALOT and have heard we could expect this new scope in our hands if we want one by spring next year. Things get delayed and it could be another 6 months, 12 months, etc. etc.

When you go FFP the reticle gets REALLY big on some scopes when you mag it up. I have a NXS NP-RF1 which is the NP-R1 in first focal plane and for shooting distant paper targets or small stuff its gets A S BIG.

I love the FFP for the quickness of short shots and not have to mag up to a certain power for your drops. Have killed stuff in a hurry ranging and just raising up to my holdover no matter what power im on.

Most guys have time and can put the scope on whatever power they need and have time for the calculations for that long shot.

I did a ton of research before I got the Premier and the reticle is holly smokes small on 25 power - almost as small as the second focal plane NP-R1.

I love a fine crosshair or dot for long range use but i also love a any power magnification holdover - so what do you do? Sucks sometimes.

Most hunters use Second focal plane i have noticed and most tactical guys use first focal plane - i could be wrong but that is what i have seemed to noticed. Chime in what you guys think.

What r u missing? - it appears part of your pants.:D
Did you get some static guard for them?:)

I just prefer the SFP. I understand the FFP have greatly improved in subtension size and thickness in the last year or so, but I still prefer the target to get larger as I crank it up and keep the crosshairs appearing smaller. It is just my personal choice for a precise point of aim at ELR I like. So there is no use in me paying for something I do not care for. As far as the having to crank the scope up thing, it really is no issue for me. I see little room for an actual mistake as I dial in both windage and elevation. If I come back for a fast follow up shot the the distance I was off is right there in my mind and I will simply hold that distance for a correction. I do not often range with the reticle and if I am spotting it is my job to be on full power. I have no real problem with that as most my scopes stay on 22X all the time and that is where the reticle is full moa. So this is the way I do it and it works for me.

YMMV.

Jeff

Thanks for the reply guys. I guess I've been shooting FFP so long I've forgotten what it's like to shoot SFP. I was thinking FFP was a more fine reticle than SFP. drbill I appreciate that explanation. Made me realize things I had not put a lot of thought in. Jeff there's no doubt whatever your doing it's working. There is also a big difference between LR and ELR and I'm not ready for ELR just yet. I understand how your methods work for you. Only question I got now is what does YMMV mean? I'm a little slow!!!

Your Milage May Vary. From old car advertisments meaning all actual results are not the same. I say use what you like and works for ya.

Jeff

Also I'm using a Gen II reticle from Premier in a 6.5x20 Mark 4. I've not looked through many other FFP's so maybe mine is a little more fine than others I don't know? All my shooting partners are SFP.

I apologize to the op if I've taken over this thread but hope these questions have applied to the subject. I just have one more for Jeff or whoever. What do you feel your gaining with the 56mm vs. the 50mm objective on the NXS?

Shortpants, The more discussion we have about Elr scopes the better. I suspect a 8-32 nxs 56mm with more moa clicks would be popular. My 5.5-22 is 50mm but based on other scopes I have that are 56 mm the image is brighter. Depends on whether you ll be shooting early mornings or late afternoons. That would be my 2c.

I thought the MOAR was going to be the ticket but they made the reticle heavier than the NP-R1, not to the extent that you get with a FFP scope on top power but still too heavy compared to the NP-R1 for 1000+ shots, for my liking anyway.

Shortpants There is no bad coice between the 50 or 56. If you need the room in a case or scabbard go 50. For most all shots the light difference will not be detectable. But for that one shot right before shooting hous close when the big bull comes out, I go with the 56 for anything it can offer me.

Jeff

Sounds like pretty sound ideas to me guys thanks for the education. I hope the people at NightForce hear our voices on what would be the "perfect" scope. They did tell me the reticle would be the MOAR or something similar. Hopefully that means there working to improve on it.

You can try the Vortex Razor. I've shot it out to 2500 yards. There is a small hole in the center ot the crosshair so you can see a target(white or colored bull) out to 3000, depending on the size of the bull. If the bull is under .1 mil in size you can center it(10 inches at 1000 meters, 20 inch at 2000 meters, and 30 inches at 3000 meters give or take a few inches, with the scope at full power) I find it very helpful for shooting way out there.
