Just this season (which isn't over for a late season cow elk hunt) I have used my Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight in 6.5-300 Wby and using 127gr Barnes LRX.

First was a nice sized northern BC black bear boar. Approximately 150 yards quartering-to shot behind the shoulder, double lung, exit just in front of the diaphragm. Went about 8 yards into the brush from the shot and the heart was deflated and soft which I had never seen before.

Second was an 11 year old mountain goat nanny (bit of a rodeo and she has a billy hooked horn which confused us). 190 yard shot, walking but perfectly broadside; tucked behind the shoulder and right behind the heart. Went through and through with the lungs being destroyed. Thought I missed because it didn't even break stride and there was a big poof of dust (they are dusty beyond what I imagined in summer). Second shot was a bit rushed but hit 2" higher and creased the bottom of the spine. Dropped right before she got to the cliffs. Definitely will be ensuring to break shoulders on the next goat; they don't get phased until their lights go out.

Third was a large northern BC bull moose. Not a record book moose, but mature with 50" across and 9x7 points. A bit over 200 yards off hand when he spotted us as he was coming up the steep cut from the river. He started to turn so he was quartered hard towards me. Went in just in the front of his near shoulder, rib, lung, heart, lung, rib, and found the bullet against the hide behind the last rib with all the petals sheared off. He turned to face downhill and then fell straight to the bottom making the pack out a long slog until 2:30 am (shot him at 5:20 pm).

Last this season so far is a great looking whitetail in Alberta with a hole in his left side antler that had a stick stuck in it and slightly wavy tines. Shot him at about 70 yards straight on. Misjudged the distance because I didn't have much time and only measured afterwards. Hit higher than I wanted but straight through the throat, neck, and then straight through the spine where the remaining shank was found right at the front of the back ham. Unbelievable penetration and destruction but I somehow still had all my back straps and tenderloin with only one backstrap having some bruising and a small bit of damage right at the butt end.

Great season so far! Hopefully I can connect in my cow elk and update.

Also last year I killed 3 whitetail deer in Alberta with the same rifle and bullet and they all dropped faster than I'd ever seen before. The combo of 127gr Barnes LRX and the speed of the 6.5-300 was amazing.

I'm gonna condense as I don't keep really good notes. Fordy I will try to keep a notebook this coming year. I'll try to list the outliers I can remember as most seem to go down at the shot.
Year 2024 Whitetail Doe. 70 to 115 pounds Count 71 6.5 Grendel, 123 eldm. MV 2550fps Distance 50-450 yards mostly mid to high shoulder shots, a few neck and head shots, and some shots in the crease or quartering slightly to or away. Roughly 90 percent dropped at the shot. The following were the exceptions.

5 Chest shot behind shoulder average run around 40 yards then piled up. A couple made it 70 yards

2 different deer, running shots hit squarely in hams broadside at approx 150 yards. Continued to run 45 more yards before slowing down and were capped off immediately there with shoulder shots

1 doe 350 yards, broadside, diaphragm and gut hit, dropped, got up, dropped with shoulder shot.

Year 2024 Whitetail Doe. Count 18. Weight 75 -115 pounds
6.5 Creedmore gas 20" barrel with 123 eldm at 2775 or Winchester Deer Season 125 at approx 2750. Range 75-300 yards. 16 mid to high shoulder shots dropped at shot or down within 5 yards. 1 at 300 yards with DS125 hit behind shoulder. Went 25 yards and piled up. 1 large doe running at 75 yards hit broadside mid shoulder with DS 125. Skidded 7 yards and done.

Year 2024 Whitetail Doe. Count 9 Weight 75 -120 pounds
6.5-06. 26" barrel, Lapua Brass, H 1000, 147 eldm at 2936fps
Range 1 at 72 yards in crease, DRT. 4 between 400 and 500 yards. 3 dropped on spot. 1 took a step as I fired. Hit mid spine, dropped. Finished with quick shoulder shot.
Shot three more between 540 and 600 yards. Hit two mid to high shoulder, dropped on spot. Hit one high just behind shoulder, dropped on spot, kicked briefly, then done.
Shot 1 at 895 yards, broadside, hit behind shoulder, bucked but showed little other signs of being hit. I could not get a second shot. She walked 60 yards and fell over dead.
Year 2024, Whitetail Doe count 3 weight 90 to 100 pounds
6.5-06 26" barrel, Win Brass, H 4831sc, 140 eldm, 2990 fps
Distance 450-640 yards. The ones at 450 and 525 dropped on the spot, mid to high shoulder hits. The one at 640 was hit mid body broadside in line with front leg, exit was roughly same vicinity and slightly larger than golfball sized. She wheeled and made it 30 yards out of the field and piled up.

Also killed 4 hogs with the Grendel recently. 3 with 123 SST. 3 were shot in the neck at approx. 75 yards. 2 I shot again because they were trying to get back to their feet and all others were gone. One went 40 yards and expired.
The last hog was a sow around 125pounds. Shot her broadside in the crease with a 123 eldm. Exited opposite crease. Blood everywhere and excellent blood trail though I didn't need it. I could see her dead with the thermal about 35 yards away.

Interestingly one evening I put my son in a small field where he would have a max 200 yard shot. I was in another field across the road and could hear the impacts when he shot. He was using my other Grendel with thermal. Of the 12 he killed that evening only 3 went straight down. The rest had run 20 to 60 yards and piled up. Some actually making it out of the field. Watching the videos I saw why. All of his shots were quite a bit lower and more in the crease than I normally like to shoot. We discussed deer anatomy and changed his shot placement. He gets far less runners now.

You're likely shy of cash from packing that big smoke poles case you shoot full of powder. That's a thirsty cartridge!

It's not that bad….ya just dump 20 to 30 grains of Bullseye in the case and "let'r rip"! Less grains/charge than the "infamous" creedmore! memtb

Sounds like some of those old cast loads that were in a 1960 edition of a Lyman loading manual I had. May still have it. I always wanted to try one of the recipes but never messed with cast. Here we go, suspect memory again. They would start with 3 or so grains of Red Dot and then add the larger, slower, primary charge on top of that. Kinda like the little dog that wakes up the big dog and gets him going.

If ya didn't figure in the cost of natural gas or electricity for the stove top and your time….you could shoot very inexpensively. In the early '70's, I was shooting "light load" 38 Specials cheaper than I could buy 22 LR bullets. memtb

Rich, I was using 300 grain Sierra SPBT's in my H&H in the late 80's….purchased in the early '80's.

They were terrible bullets, came "completely from untogether" when contacting an animal…..wouldn't even exit a deer or an average Black Bear with a broadside hit on both. The bullets just disintegrated…..only found small pieces of jacket!

I heard that apparently, those produced at a later date than those I had bought were much better bullets. Though, I'll never know. I have never nor will ever, buy another Sierra bullet!

I contacted Sierra about my findings. Their excuses/reasons for my bullet failures were absolute BS…..I was pushing them too fast,I was using the wrong powder, the rifling was too sharp!

Hence the reason for my attitude toward Sierra!

I apologize for the "derail", 35+ years later….I'm still PO'd! memtb

I lost a lot of my components, manuals, and vintage loading stuff in a flood in 2015. But I think I have seen that manual recently. I'll look and send post some pics if I still have it.

I recently gave away a few thousand cast 38 and 45 bullets an older loader gave me. They were stored in WWII metal film reel cans. Went to a friend that does a lot of low velocity 38 spec loads.
He looks out for me too and saves Grendel brass for me.
