6.5 SHERMAN MAX/156 BERGER

Well I was able to get my paws on some 156 Berger they are like gold up here but I got a stash lol. I also have 6.5 SAUM Brass coming now too soon as my ELK is down the 338 SS will be going for its switch barrel in the 6.5 MAX.
Rich what your thoughts on powder I need to start hoarding that to lol
I figure N 565 570 will or H1000 should push big heavies well. Lol don't say RL 26 it smells funny I don't like it.
The Max should leave a vapor trail with N570! N565 should do well too.
Other slow powders in that range should all work. Ill Ill bet they will run 3250 with N570 and a 26" barrel.

Perfect I'm running a #5 5R 7.5 twist @ 23inch then 4 port break so as long as I'm over the 3K I'll be happy if it's more then I'll really be smiling.
I guess I'll go back to my N570 search darn i should not have sold my last lot.

Brass and bullets are here just waiting on switch barrel now.:)

It does make sense, the SAUM is a very efficient case. That would be a good wager though using RL-26 powder in both. I would say the Sherman Max. would get 100+ fps over the long case.
That would be north of 3400 fps. I can run my 6.5 sherman based on the 270 case over 3300 with n570 and a 28" barrel.

I'll keep watching this as well. If the MAX out runs the original LA Sherman, that's impressive. As said above mine ran 140 Berger's at 3339 FPS out of a 28" Hart with N570. Haven't shot it for awhile. Maybe I should form some new brass and try it again.

What do you think your build will weigh in at with the 23" #5 barrel? I'm thinking about building one off a tikka action. And doing a switch barre 338 max and 6.5 max. With a 23" #5 barrel so I can run a can on it one day

This will be a switch barrel using a #5 currently rifle weighs 8.5 scoped with a 24 so with one inch less pipe but a smaller bore diameter I'm guessing identical weight. This outfit seems to be the perfect weight for me and I like the platform if I get boredI'm just going to to spin up another barrel It's way cheaper lol.

Rich how would velocity with the max compare to a 264 Win Mag in a 28" tube? I have a 28" proof blank laying around I need to build. Was leaning toward the 264 WM but like the idea of running a short action instead of long.

I dont know what the WM would do but I'll bet the Max would run North of 3250'.
Might hit 3300'?
It really needs a mid action though.

Understood on the medium action. I'm not opposed to that since I need to by an action anyway. I'm sure there's more threads on it but when do you anticipate reamer, dies and head stamped brass to be available.

Reamers are here. Brass in May but 7 max brass could be used now. Dies about May but 6.5 ss dies could be used now.

With the WM using Federal brass I topped out around 3175-3200 with the 156 in a SAAMI chamber, if using ADG 7 mag brass I'm certain 3200-3250 would be doable for a max, not sure where it would end up for max though, especially if throated long. That is with a 26". Just for reference
