I finally got around to trying the 156 Berger in my .235" free bore 6.5 Sherman LA with Retumbo. This is my 2nd barrel (276 rds) on a SwitchLug build by Clayton @ West Texas Ordnance. Stiller Tac 300, Bartlein 3B, 5R 1: 8, 26" in Manners EH-1, and March F1, 3-24x52. Current barrel is about 50 fps faster than first barrel and shoots 140s @ 3175 with no pressure.

Using once fired 280 Norma brass, I expected there would be some variance in velocities, so I loaded 3 rounds of each charge weight to even things out and get my cases fully formed. Cases are annealed each firing. 156s have been sorted by BTO prior to coating with HBN and barrel was treated with HBN slurry. All rounds shot @ 100 yds with no wind hold, as the velocity and ES were my primary objective.

I started with lower charges than needed, just to get a second firing on 50 cases. I shot charge weights from 56.5 gr. (2,728 ) up to 62.5 (3,038 fps) cooling to ambient temperature between shots. I had zero pressure signs at my max load, so I'll see how far up I can go. I deprime on a separate press, so I'll check for loose primer pockets.

I just picked .010" jump for pressure testing for now. CBTO is
2.904" and COAL is 3.596" on my Sherman #2 reamer, .235 FB. Conditions varied thru the day, temperature ranged 81* to 94*, wind was 5-12 mph back and forth from 3:00 to 4:30. Til noon there was cloud cover, afternoon the sun was out w/heavy mirage. It is indicated in the verticle on the last 4 targets.

This was a fast barrel with HBN, so work up safely for your barrel.
Targets are below. Hope this helps if you can use the data. I'll post my
final results when I'm finished.

Oh you can get more out of that Sherman!lol. I maxed at 3120fps in my AI using RL26. Settled on a good 1/2MOA load at 3030fps (verified .5 MOA at 500 yds).

Pretty solid ES at 62 grns looks like. I'd settle there and start messing with seating depth. That 156 at 3000+ sounds like just the right medicine for a big mulie!

Definitely gonna have to see just how fast it will go. Got a couple of good mulie tags in my wallet and a new 6.5 SS I'm just starting to do work up on, time is getting short.

Tagging in to see how this goes. Haven't shot my Sherman for a couple years. Mine topped out at 3339 fps with a 140 Berger out of a 28" Hart, using N570.

I also tried the N-570, great velocities, but was chewing up my lands pretty fast. Going to stick to Retumbo and probably try RL-26, after hunting season is over.

Now that my brass is twice fired, I think there is velocity to gain, especially if the weather ever cools down in Texas.

Plenty cool in Manitoba right now, and wet. My problem is I need new brass. Trying to find some Norma. Was shooting tonight. Hands got cold!! Think I'll try R26 as I have a new 8lb jug. I look forward to your results.

It should run 3200 with a short bearing surface bullet like the 156
Easy for you to say, LOL. At your elevation and temperature, I'm sure I could. Norma ain't ADG, now if they'd make brass for 6.5S we'd all be busting 3,250, HaHa.

Shot a few more rounds in the 6.5 SS today with H-1000, up to 58.0 gr. Not overly impressed. What's the load range for RL-26?

Probably max around 61-62 with 140

Thanks, I'll go ahead and finish a second firing with the H-1000 on the the SS and then switch to RL- 26. I need to get 100+ rds on the barrel anyway, hoping it will speed up.

Sorry they are out of order.
thanks for posting this I have a box of 156's that I need to get loaded soon for hunting season. your data is very close to my load for the 155 Cauterucio9( which is in every way I can measure identical to the Berger).
Cliff

Hey Cliff, Good to hear from you.

It's close because I modeled my loads off your Cauterucio dope in the Sherman loading data. I just didn't know it was yours. Great minds think alike. It'll be 2-3 more days before I know how much I can push this load. I'll let you know. Also sending you a PM.
Thanks, David
